GRAND CRU-ATION : A DESIGN EXCHANGE COMPETITION CREATIVE BRIEF 2 PROJECT NAME Grand Cru-Ation A Design Exchange Competition Presented By Nespresso INTRODUCTION Grand Cru-ation A Design Exchange Competition invites designers, architects, engineers, students, and related design professionals from Ontario and Quebec to submit proposals for an aluminum structure that facilitates interaction during moments of pause and promotes environmentally friendly behaviour. The winning works will be manufactured and unveiled at Toronto s revitalized Union Station in Fall 2016. CONCEPT SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS How To Submit: Entries must be submitted electronically in two separate attachments (one for images, and a second for written requirements). Entries should be submitted to nespresso@dx.org and can be submitted through WeTransfer, Dropbox, or other cloud-based file transfer service. Entrants must complete registration and release form. Attachments must be categorized as: Image Attachments: NGC2016_Projectname Written Attachments: NGC2016_AboutProjectname Students must categorize attachments as: Grand Cru-ation challenges entrants to create an aluminum structure that facilitates interaction during moments of pause, as well as a small recycling receptacle for the countertop to encourage environmentally friendly behaviour. ELIGIBILITY Participation is open to: Design Practitioners (designers, architects, interior designers, engineers, etc.) in Quebec and Ontario Students currently enrolled in a post-secondary design program (industrial design, architecture, interior design, etc.) in Ontario or Quebec Group participation is permitted. In such cases, participants are required to designate one individual as leader for registration and contact purposes. Image Attachments: NGC2016_ProjectnameST Written Attachments: NGC2016_AboutProjectnameST DESIGN Each structure must not exceed dimensions of 5 x5 x5 and must be composed of 70% aluminum and remaining material incorporated is at the discretion of the designer Each entry must be functional and durable; designed for high-traffic areas Each entry must not require the support of a platform Each entry must not exceed final production budget of $3000 per unit Each entry must be new work or work created after January 2015, and must not be contracted or mass produced Each entry must be an original creation without infringing on any creative copyright Each entry should not include any components that require electricity Each entry should be freestanding and require no additional support Each entry must include a small recycling compartment included in the design
GRAND CRU-ATION : A DESIGN EXCHANGE COMPETITION CREATIVE BRIEF 3 DIGITAL IMAGES Each submission must include provide a minimum of three and maximum of five renderings. One image must clearly display the scale of the design. All images must be JPG format, at 300 dpi resolution and no larger than 1 MB each. Renderings must show a minimum of two main views of elevations One renderings must show the perspective showing the design in its entirety Entries will be categorized by Project Name. All images must be labelled exactly as follows: NGC2016_Project name_image# with Image 1 selected as the preferred image for use by competition s organizers (e.g.: NGC2016_Projectname_1) Competition is completely blind to the judges. Images must NOT contain the name or logo of the designer, architect, firm, or company. Please note, fabrication drawings may be requested. Entrants must submit (one page, PDF format) titled Environmental Impact of not less than 150 words or more than 500 words that describes how the concept satisfies the environmental requirement Entrants must include preliminary budget that identifies expenses and offers a description of how the project fits within the financial parameters Curriculum Vitae and Biography: Entrants are required to submit a CV (two pages maximum, PDF format) that should include information about education; work and teaching experience; exhibition history (if applicable); awards, grants, and residencies; and other relevant information. Entrants are required to submit a biographical statement not exceeding 200 words. Please note that Cover Sheet and CV and Biography will be withheld from the Jury until after deliberation. WRITTEN COMPONENTS Cover Sheet: Entrants must include a cover sheet (one page PDF format) with name, mailing address, telephone number, email, and project title, If applying as a team, please include the names and emails for each team member and identify one team member as the Lead Contact. Project Proposal, Environmental Impact Statement and Budget: Entrants must include sheet (one page, PDF format), titled Description of Grand Cru-ation Project of not less than 150 words or more than 500 words summarizing proposed project, including measurements, materials used. Degree of innovation The body of work is new or supplements an existing product with a new desirable quality. Deadline for Submissions: August 8 Jury Session: August 31 Technical Review, Development of Construction Drawings, Tendering: Second week of September Winners Announced Publically: October 2016 2. Aesthetic quality The body of work is pleasant to look at. 3. Functionality and usefulness The work fulfills all requirements of handling, usability, safety, and maintenance. The work fulfills a need or function. 4. Emotional content - mediate practical purpose in terms of sensual quality, 5. Impact The body of work is beneficial to a greater community. Is this competition only for single designers? This competition is open to single designers, as well as design partners, and teams. Please ensure additional team members are listed on the registration form along with all content submitted. What is the submission deadline? All submissions are due August 8, 2016 at midnight. Any late or incomplete entries will not be accepted. Is it possible to create a platform for the project? No, each entry must not require the support of a platform. Each entry must be self-supporting with no additional support required. Will there be any power supplied for the projects? The projects will not have any access to power. FAQ Who can participate? Is there a fee to enter? No, fee is $0. Is there a limit to the number of proposals entrants can submit? Yes there is a limit of three proposals entrants can submit. Can we embed video or other special features into the PDF submissions? Please do not embed any video into submissions. The Jury will be presented with hard copies. Can the project name identify the entrants? Entrants must not use a project name that can be used to identify a group or individual. If used, this will result in disqualification. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY/PRIORITY RIGHTS/RIGHTS OF PUBLICATION By entering the competition, the entrant: (i) agrees that Nespresso and Design Exchange will have the right to use and/or publish in any medium and for any purpose, without compensation, the submitted design, (ii) certifies and warrants that the submitted work is the entrant s own original work and that the work, including its eventual publication by Nespresso and/or Design Exchange, does not and will not infringe any right of any third party, including intellectual property rights and rights of privacy and (iii) agrees that Nespresso and Design Exchange may use either during or at any time following the competition, but in relation to the competition, the name and photograph of the entrant without restriction or compensation. TERMINATION OF NESPRESSO S GRAND CRU-ATION COMPETITION Nespresso and Design Exchange reserve the right to suspend, modify, terminate or cancel the competition at any time.
