4 School Stone of Keimyung University LAPIS LAZULI 4
Keimyung University Stone ( 校石 ) LAPIS-LAZULI (Cheonggeumseok, 靑金石 ) Lapis Lazuli is semiprecious stone that appears to have been cherished ever since the Neolithic age. Stone beads made of lapis lazuli, which has an opaque deep blue color, have been found at burial sites dating to the 7th millennium BCE. Jewelry made from the stone was used in Ur of the Chaldeans(4th millennium BCE), mentioned in Gligamash, an epic poem from Mesopotamia(18th century BCE), and the stone was also used to decorate the funeral mask of the Egyption pharaoh Tutankhamun(14th century BCE). The whirling patterns of the lazurite rock standing in front of the Main Hall on Seongseo Campus are spangled with metallic, yellow-gold pyrite and blue sodalite. These patterns seem to represent the heavens filled with stars and billowing clouds and, thus, the cosmic truths of the peoples of the ancient civilizations, who considered lapis lazuli to be sacred. The Jewish people, for example, believed that the stone under the feet of the God of the Old Testament was lapis lazuli and that the two stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were engraved were also made from this stone. The deep blue color of the Keimyung University Stone symbolizes our institutional will to seek the Kingdom of Truth, Justice and Love, which we hold to be the highest ideals of human existence.
