NATIONAL 4-H WEEK October 2nd-8th Since 4-H began more than 100 years ago, it has become the nation s largest youth development organization. 4-H s reach and depth is unmatched. The 4-H idea is simple: help young people and their families gain the skills needed to be proactive forces in their communities and develop ideas for a more innovative economy. SOME HISTORY: In 1902, A. B. Graham started a youth program in Clark County, Ohio, which is considered the birth of 4 H in the United States. The first club was called The Tomato Club. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4 H. By 1924, 4 H clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted. Today, 4 H serves youth in rural, urban, and suburban communities in every state across the nation. 4 H ers are tackling the nation s top issues, from global food security, climate change and sustainable energy to childhood obesity and food safety. 4 H out-of -school programming, in-school enrichment programs, clubs and camps also offer a wide variety of STEM opportunities from agricultural and animal sciences to rocketry, robotics, environmental protection and computer science to improve the nation s ability to compete in key scientific fields and take on the leading challenges of the 21st century. 4-H is a Community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Kids experience 4-H in every county and parish in the country through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4-H camps. Amberley now is inspiring thousands across America by telling her inspirational story and competing in rodeos across the western United States. Amberley has turned her tragedy into triumph and is inspiring all of America to Get Back on the Horse. She has let the challenges she faces refine her, not define her.

Have you noticed little rolled up worm looking things on your floors this fall? Good chance the little elongated, dark colored insects are Millipedes. They're very adept at finding entry points around plumbing or electrical outlets or around windows, cracks and doorways. Thoroughly sealing all those cracks and crevices will eliminate some access. Millipedes usually die within a few days of entering a structure unless there is a source of high moisture and good food supply. The Backyard Farmer recommends putting down sticky traps, and placing them in areas where you have had problems in the past. These will collect many more insects- wood roaches, crickets, roly-polies and millipedes. For serious problems, you can use a foundation spray of bifenthrin or permethrin, two or three feet up the sides of the foundation. That will keep them from staying in that area. But, generally, sealing and putting some sticky traps out will get the job done. Winter Energy Savings Preparing Your Home for Winter Begins in the Fall Autumn will be here soon and what you save on energy bills this winter will depend largely on what you do now. Here are some steps you can take to help make your home warm, cozy, and Doors and Windows Replace worn weather stripping around doors and windows. energy efficient this winter. Caulk around gaps in windows and door glass. Install storm doors if you have them. Chimney and Fireplace Have the chimney and fireplace checked and cleaned by a professional. Repair or replace poorly or loose-fitting dampers; they allow warm air to escape. Make sure that flashing around chimney and vent pipes is sealed tight. Heating System Have your heating system checked by a certified professional. Clean vents and other heating system components. Replace your furnace's filter and continue to replace it regularly. Outside Your Home Replace any missing or damaged roof shingles. Clean gutters and make sure that downspouts point away from the house. DONATION FROM CONSTELLATION Did you know that by selecting certain gas companies you can be supporting your community and the 4-H program? This last month a donation to the Harlan County 4-H program came in on behalf of Constellation. Constellation participates in the Choice Gas program in Nebraska a program that allows homeowners, businesses, farmers and ranchers to choose their natural gas supplier each year. Constellation serves 60 counties in Nebraska. All together they are providing a total of more than $21,000 to help support 4-H and FFA in their service areas this year!
