Course Introduction Course Overview More than ever, advanced practice providers are taking a more active role with their patients throughout the cancer care continuum. This expanded role has led to a need to improve clinical practice and develop a better understanding of optimizing care for individuals. Advanced practice providers must stay abreast of treatment advances and their integration into clinical practice as well as the ever changing health care climate. Scripps Cancer Center s Advanced Practice Oncology Providers Symposium is designed for nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, physician assistants, and other experienced health care professionals dedicated to the field of hematology-oncology. This newly designed two day conference aims to update advanced practice providers on a wide variety of topics affecting practice today. The 2013 program will delve into the biology of ALK inhibitors, mutation-directed therapies in melanoma, photodynamic therapy, PTSD in the oncology environment, and nutrition and exercise for cancer patients. Identify different surgical approaches to treating hepatic lesions. Assess current data regarding mutation-directed and non-mutation directed therapies in melanoma. Discuss the role of nutrition in patient management. Summarize effective interventions for cognitive impairment. Demonstrate effective communication techniques with patients. Evaluate the benefits of photodynamic therapy. Identify and treat patients with post-traumatic stress syndrome related to a cancer diagnosis. Describe the mechanism of action of kinase inhibition and which patient populations benefit from this technology. Recognize the physical and psychological benefits of exercise during cancer therapy. Describe the basics of bone marrow and stem cell transplant options. Cite approaches and interventions for patients with oncologic emergencies. Discuss cardiovascular disorders as they relate to oncology patients. Establish networking relationships with clinical colleagues on contemporary advanced practice provider solutions.
