From Bilateral Partners to Multilateral Networking: How to run multiple strategic-partnerships? The Global Partner Network of the, / www.eurieeducationsummit.com

was established in 1388 It is currently the largest University in Germany (50.000+ students in 2017) Since 2012 is one of 11 German Universities of Excellence UoC is a full-range research University with particular research excellence in Life Sciences, Physics, Plant research, Global South Studies, Economics and International Law. We run 30+ PhD-Schools and Postgraduate Centres UoC holds 8 university-wide Partnerships and numerous Erasmus-exchange agreements with Turkish Universities March 2017

Content 1. UoC s Global Network Partners 2. The Global Network Partnership and its importance in the UoC s internationalization strategy 3. How to make global partnerships work 4. Networking en passant

UoC s Global Network Partners

A comprehensive partnership in internationalization Partners in research and teaching Privileged relations of mutual preference and trust Building and benefiting of synergies Creating long-lasting cooperation Developing long-term structures of partnership Limited, exclusive number

Searching for partners at eye level Similar in size Matching structure and scope Research oriented, full scale university (incl. Medicine) Comparable in reputation and prestige National and internationally leading universities Pre-existing partnerships Diverse cross faculty contacts and cooperation

UoC s Global Network Partners: Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou/China Keio University, Tokyo/Japan University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder/USA University of Capetown, Capetown/South Africa KU Leuven, Leuven/Belgium Radboud University/Nijmegen Charles University/Prague

The Global Network Partnership and its importance in the UoC s internationalization strategy Universität zu Köln Der Kanzler

Internationalization of UoC: Dense Network of Partnerships 6000+ foreign students Intensive EU- Exchange through Erasmus-Program 50+ intercontinental Exchange-Programs 300+ international guest scholars p.a. International Faculty 7 Global Network Partners 10 Strategic Research Partners 300+ cooperations on the level of faculties and institutes International offices in China, India and the USA Universität zu Köln Der Kanzler Folie: 9

A preferred relationship: The Global Network Partnership Distinctions: Strategic Research Partnership (research-oriented alliance for top-level research) Global Network Partnership (partnerships in internationalization) GNP: Highest form of partnership at UoC Preferred partner in their respective regions Based on mutual trust and commitment Aimed at comprehensive cooperation on all levels in research and teaching Focused on strategic, long lasting, and structural cooperation

Global Network Partners und Strategic Research Partners Global Network Partners Internationalization on all levels Cross faculties Strategic Research Partners Internationalization of cuttingedge research Research alliances in key areas Intersections are welcome but not necessary Folie: 11

An innovative contract: The Global Network Partnership Agreement Priority-clause (non-exclusive prerogative) specific definitions Definition of objectives Set financial commitment Flexibility through constant revisions and regular updates

A productive and proactive partnership: Longlasting, comprehensive, and structural Equal focus on teaching and research Aimed at the development of permanent cooperation through: Long-term projects Institutionalized projects (Double Degree, Cotutelle, Joint Training) Broad integration of people Institutionally based incentives and proactive management Integration of all faculties and exchange on all levels (Students, Doctoral students, non-professorial teaching staff, professors, staff, administration)

Exchange, cooperation, and joint ventures Global Network Partners support and promote: Mobility of students, researchers, and staff Cooperation on teaching projects Cooperation on research projects Cooperation on training doctoral students/cotutelle Joint/Double degree programs (M.A./PhD) Joint funding Wherever there is a chance!

How to make global partnerships work

Finance Global Network Partnerships are not (only) about money! Financial specifications in the GNP-Agreement are indicative not absolute UoC currently allocated 50,000 for GNP activities Mostly mobility funds rededicated to this purpose Funding in terms of Seed Money Financial incentives to start a cooperation Preferred funding for mutual projects in teaching and research All supported activities should seek third party funding Global Network Partners are actively endeavoring third party funding for the partnerships Folie: 16

Governance GNP s support and promote cooperation The UoC has limited tools for governance Faculties and chairs are mostly autonomous Faculties are independent Financial incentives (through objectives, quality management, and central support of mobility) Proactive information and promotion to convince Extensive support and care by the Regional coordinators for each GNP Frequent and regular communication with faculties and research centers Folie: 17

Promotion and Internal Communication UoC initially had inefficient communication channels because: Many researchers are not aware of GNP Misconception of GNP activities as exclusive and centralized Insufficient top-down communication Direct communication through International Newsletter and regular meetings Address target-groups through mailing list and information at faculty meetings Web-based external communication through websites and social media Information on exchange activities and projects with GNP Regionally focused websites (North America, China, India, Japan, Africa)

Communication among the Global Network Partners Trustful and regular contact News exchange on relevant topics (possible cooperation, funding opportunities, government initiatives, etc.) Regular in-person meetings and consultations UoC encourages staff exchange

Networking en passant: The Global Partner Network

Sharing friends and funds: The Global Partner Network Since 2015 Development from bilateral Global Network Partners to a multilateral Global Partner Network Mutual interest in the partnership Partial interest in Research networks Joint courses of study Multilateral education of doctoral students ERASMUS-Mundus-Projects Joint acquisition of external funds Planning of a multinational BA in Economics Universität zu Köln Der Kanzler

Joint Acquisition of external funds Global Network Partners independently acquire external funds for Specialized projects General exchange activities UoC prefers the GNPs in binational and multinational external fund announcements E.g.: DAAD-Program Strategic Partnerships, DIES, Erasmus Mundus, International Graduate Schools UoC supports national applications of partners at all times
