Information Page 2 of 6 BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION Markham 2018 MISSION STATEMENT / EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The City of Markham and the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science are committed to fostering and supporting the entrepreneurial spirit and skills of students and young adults of York Region. In partnership with the Ontario Government, the City of Markham and other business sponsors; the Markham Small Business Centre is administering the Markham Business Plan Competition 2018. The Competition is open to all High School, College or University students who reside in Markham, attend a school in Markham or attend Seneca College. The program will encourage the students to develop a business concept, undertake research to determine feasibility and write a business plan to document their work and plans. The objective is to create opportunities for aspiring young entrepreneurs to experience the hard work required to research, plan and launch a business, and thus develop their entrepreneurial skills. SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE CENTRES The Markham Small Business Centre (MSBC) is part of a network of 57 Small Business Enterprise Centres operating throughout the Province of Ontario. The offices are partnerships of the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Science and the municipal governments. Their mandate is to provide assistance and support to small and medium-sized businesses in both their start-up and early growth stages; and to promote and encourage entrepreneurship as a viable career option. KEY FEATURES Objective The main objective of the Markham Business Plan Competition 2018 is to promote entrepreneurial spirit, skill and experience for young people in Markham. Nominee(s) The program is open to students in Grades 9-12 at any High School (including public, catholic and independent schools) of Markham. There is also a category for Post-Secondary students to compete. The students can work alone or in a group (maximum 3 students) to create and submit a business plan. Deadline All business plans are to be received on or before May 23, 2018.

Information Page 3 of 6 Judging Panel A panel of judges consisting of representatives from across the area will evaluate the business plans to determine the winners. The panel will include government representatives, members of the business and education communities and small business owners. Evaluation of the business plans will be based on criteria outlined on the Business Plan Judging Criteria as attached on Page 6. Number of Awards There will be a total of five awards for High School level students: The BDO Award of Excellence for First Place, two Finalists, a Seneca Award of Innovation, and a Video Pitch Winner. For Post-Secondary students, there are three awards: The Seneca First Prize, a Seneca Award of Innovation, and a Video Pitch Winner. The Seneca Award of Innovation will be awarded for the business plan submission (one High School and one Post-Secondary) that represents the most unique, novel and innovative business concept (i.e., technology, energy, environmental, social innovation, and health), out of all qualifying business plans received in the competition. This special award may be awarded to any qualifying business plan received, including those selected as finalists or winner. In order for a business plan to qualify for this award, it must, at a minimum, be considered among the Top Ten business plans received. The Video Pitch Winner is a new prize category. Students who are interested may optionally submit a link to a 2-minute video pitch about their business idea to accompany their business plan submission. This gives students an added opportunity to receive a recognition award for their creativity and to practice their pitch skills. One video from high school students and one video from post-secondary students will be chosen for this award. The winning video should have a clear and realistic description of the business idea, clear identification of the target market; demonstrate a creative and interesting message and use of branding (e.g., company name, logo, tag lines). Judges will also look at effective use of video techniques, clarity in tone of message, convincing sales pitch and a compelling call to action. Students may submit the same video pitch from the OCE Make Your Pitch competition to this Markham Business Plan Competition and vice versa; however, in order to be given consideration in this Markham Business Plan Competition, the video pitch submission must be submitted along with a completed business plan on that same idea being pitched.. Prize Structure High School Students Post-Secondary Students BDO Award of Excellence for First Prize $600/group Seneca First Prize $600/group Finalists (2 awards) $300/group Seneca Award of Innovation $200/group Seneca Award of Innovation $200/group Video Pitch Winner $200/group Video Pitch Winner $200/group Awards Ceremony Award winners will be honored at an Awards Ceremony in October (exact date to be determined) with extensive media coverage.
