Utah Women s Soccer Prospectus Page 5 Ute Notebook Nine starters and 18 letterwinners return for the Utes in 2006. The Utes went 14-7-1, won the Mountain West Conference regular season title for the second time in three years, and advanced to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament in 2005. Utah's 14 wins in 2005 was the second-best mark in the 11-year history of the program. The Utes set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories (16-2-2) in 2003. The Utes registered 13 wins in 2004 (13-6-3), 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). The Utes claimed the 2005 Mountain West Conference regular season title with a 6-0-1 record. Utah won its first six conference games before tying BYU 1-1 on Oct. 28 in Provo, Utah. The Utes finished undefeated in conference play for the second time in school history. Utah's other undefeated league record came in 2003 (6-0-0). Since Rich Manning took over as Utah's head coach in 2002, the Utes have the best winning percentage in Mountain West Conference games. Utah has an.820 winning percentage (19-3-3), followed by BYU at.760 (17-4-4), UNLV at.560 (14-11-0) and San Diego State at.500 (10-10-5). The Utes have won four of the last six conference regular season and tournament titles combined. Utah claimed the 2003 Mountain West regular season championship. The Utes won the MWC Tournament in 2003 and '04. In the 2005 postseason, Utah earned the No. 1 seed in the MWC Tournament after claiming the regular season title. The tournament took place Nov. 2-5 at UNLV's Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Utes defeated No. 8 seed Air Force 3-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to New Mexico 1-0 in the semifinals. Utah hosted NCAA Tournament play for the second time in 2005 with first and second round games staged Nov. 10-12 at Ute Field. The first round session on Nov. 10 drew 1,650 fans, registering the largest paid attendance in the history of the facility. Utah fell to Arizona in the first round, 1-0. Head Coach Rich Manning is 56-19-9 (.720) entering his fifth season at Utah. He has led the Utes to the NCAA Tournament all four years of his tenure, two Mountain West Conference regular season championships (2003, 05) and a pair of league tournament titles (2003, 04). Manning was named the 2005 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading Utah to its second regular season title in three years with a 6-0-1 mark and the second-most wins in school history with a 14-7-1 overall record. He guided Utah to its second consecutive MWC Tournament title in 2004. In 2003, Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Amanda Feigt garnered Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year and first team all-league honors in 2005. Feigt ranked fifth in the league in goals per game (0.32). She tied for the team lead with seven goals including five in MWC games and had two assists. Senior defender/midfielder Melissa Wayman was named to the NSCAA all- West Region third team and the Soccer Buzz all-west Region second team last season. Wayman was also honored with the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year award and was named first team all-mwc. Wayman had three goals and three assists. per game (3.23), sixth in points per game (0.91), tied for fifth in goals per game (0.32), sixth in assists per game (0.27). The Davis, Calif., native led the Utes in both goals (7) and assists (6) Senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason was named second team all-mwc in 2005. She ranked 28th in the NCAA and third in the MWC in goals against average (.723). The Sunnyvale, Calif., native also ranked sixth in the conference in saves per game (3.95) and third in shutouts (7.3). Mason was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII second team. She earned the honor with a 3.79 grade-point average in exercise and sport science with a physiology emphasis. Utah ranked 24th in the nation in goals-against-average (.707) in 2005. Individually, goalkeeper Ashley Mason was 28th in goals against average (.723). In the final MWC team rankings, Utah was second in shots (14.23 spg), second in points (4.41 ppg), second in goals per game (1.50), second in assists per game (1.41), fourth in goals against average (0.71), fifth in saves (4.05 spg), third in shutouts (10) and fourth in corners (3.36 cpg). Utah is 5-5-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in four seasons under Rich Manning. In the Utes' four games against a ranked teams last season, Utah lost at No. 22 Arizona (1-0 OT) on Sept. 16, fell to No. 9 California (1-0 2OT) at home on Sept. 25, lost at No. 10 Pepperdine (1-0) on Sept. 30, and tied No. 12 BYU (1-1) on the road on Oct. 28. In 2004, the Utes won at No. 7 UCLA (2-1) on Oct. 1. Utah was 2-1 against NSCAA/adidas Top 25 teams in both 2002 and '03. Utah's all-time postseason record is 11-9-3, including a 1-3-1 mark in the NCAA Championship. The Utes have made four NCAA appearances, all coming under Rich Manning. The Utes are 10-6-2 in conference tournaments, including a 9-5- 2 mark in Mountain West Conference Tournament play. The Utes have never lost in the quarterfinals and claimed tournament titles in 2003 and '04. Goalkeeper Ashley Mason ranks first in career goals against average (.684), third in career goalkeeper saves (219) and first in career shutouts (21.5) entering her senior season at Utah. On the Ute single-season charts, Mason finished third in goals against average (0.723) and second in goalkeeper shutouts (7.3) in 2005. Ten Utes were named to the 2005 Academic All-Mountain West team. Making the team were Katie Battazzo, Emily Campbell, Chelsea Card, Michelle Deatherage, Kiley Jones, Kim Lloyd, Hailey Marsh, Ashley Mason, Katy Reineke, and Melissa Wayman. Utah will take on perhaps its toughest schedule ever in 2006 with 10 games against NCAA Tournament teams. Utah's 10-game home schedule features match-ups against six NCAA Tournament teams: Arizona, Fresno State, Colorado, Pepperdine, UNLV and BYU. The Utes open the season in the Santa Clara/adidas Classic, Aug. 25-27. The home schedule kicks-off Labor Day weekend with the Utah Fall Classic. The Utes will face Washington State (Sept. 1) and Arizona (Sept. 3). Utah s 2006 roster includes two newcomers and four redshirts from last season. Rookie Kelly Isleib (F, Park City, Utah) made the Under-20 U.S. National team player pool in 2006. She is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in January. Isleib was also named to the 2005 NSCAA/adidas All-America team and a Top 50 recruit by Soccer Buzz. The Utes also signed Jena Roberts (D, Centerville, Utah), a first team all-state selection. Sophomore forward Adele Letro made the 2005 Soccer Buzz all-west Region freshman team. She was also named the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference.
