D KO E IT SPARKIES! is a national hackathon competition for upper primary school children. This competition is jointly organised by Kodecoon and Times Experience, a subsidiary of Times Publishing Limited. This competition aims to drive technical and design creativity in students from Primary 3 to 6 in Singapore. As part of the competition, participants learn how to design and build their own websites at the boot camp, where they are introduced to the wonders of coding with HTML and CSS. No prior knowledge is required. 04

SCOPE OF COMPETITION 01 TEAM FORMATION At the end of the 2-day boot camp, participants will be grouped into teams. 02 PRESENTATION AT FINALS Each team will present their ideas and solutions at the finals, based on the topic they have selected from the organiser s topic list. 03 WEBSITE SHOWCASE For presentation, each team will make use of a website that they have designed and built on BSD LaunchBox, an educational platform taught at the boot camp. THEME OF COMPETITION 01 SMART NATION Based on the topic chosen, the team will present a new idea on how technology can be used to make life better, in line with Singapore s vision of a Smart Nation. 02 PROBLEM SOLVING Each team will present a solution that solves an existing problem, or improves a current way of doing things in school or at home, based on the theme of Mobility or Living. BOOT CAMP All participants get to attend a 2-day boot camp worth $230 hosted by Kodecoon. Participants will be guided on the basics of designing and building their own website. No prior knowledge is required. Participants are required to bring their own laptops and chargers. The camp will be held over the weekend on 16, 17 June 2018. Lunch will be provided. No overnight stay is required. COMPETITION DAY Date : 24 June 2018 (Sun) Time : 08:30-18:00 Venue : Our Tampines Hub (Festive Walk) 1 Tampines Walk, Singapore 528523 Nearest MRT Station: Approximately 5 minutes walk from Tampines MRT The finals will be held on 24 June 2018 at Our Tampines Hub, as part of Happy Sparks event organised by Times Experience. All participants are to bring along a photo ID on the competition day for registration purposes. Laptops will be provided to all teams. The specific question for the competition will be released to the teams on the competition day itself. One facilitator will be attached to two teams for guidance. All teams are encouraged to be creative in making a compelling and engaging case for their solution. The top three teams will be shortlisted to make their presentations on the main stage to the live audience at the event. Our panel of judges will pick the best team as the overall winner of the competition.

JUDGING CRITERIA 01 RELEVANCE Solution stems from a need which is relevant to theme 02 NOVELTY Need addressed is novel and/or solution is creative Idea shows innovativeness in design and/or components used 03 DESIGN Website shows good design and is user-friendly Effort has been taken to make the website aesthetically pleasing 04 USEFULNESS The need is impactful, i.e. impacts many or has a large impact on a few 05 COST EFFECTIVENESS The implementation of idea is cost-effective 06 PRESENTATION Content on the website are clear and of excellent quality information Presenters are confident and can articulate message clearly Questions posed by judges are answered well 07 TEAMWORK Each member of the team has participated constructively to the overall idea and presentation Teams will be assessed based on the above on an equally weighted basis. These 7 judging rubrics will be based on scoring by the panel of judges. Each judge will assign a score of 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest) to each rubric for each team during the preliminary round. Each rubric holds equal weightage. Winning team will be the team with the highest total score. 010

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 01 WHO WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER THE COMPETITION? This competition is open to all students from primary 3 to 6 in Singapore. International students studying in Singapore are also welcome to take part. 02 HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE COMPETITION? Register online at happysparks.com/kodeitsparkies2018 03 WHEN DOES THE REGISTRATION CLOSE? Registration closes on 13 June 2018. For early bird, registration closes on 31 May 2018. 04 HOW MUCH IS THE REGISTRATION FEE? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 06 SO THERE S A BOOT CAMP AS PART OF THE COMPETITION? Yes. Before proceeding to the finals, all participants will attend a boot camp to familiarise themselves with the programming basics and to create mini projects. Students are expected to bring their own laptops and chargers to the boot camp. The 2-day boot camp will be held over the June School Holidays weekend on 16 and 17 June 2018, from 8.30am to 5.00pm, at Times Centre, 1 New Industrial Road, Singapore 536196. Lunch will be provided. Students do not need to stay overnight. 07 IS THIS AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP COMPETITION? Although students enter the competition as individual participant, they will be grouped into teams by the end of the boot camp. These teams will proceed to the finals to make their team presentations. The team that scores the highest scores given by the judges will emerge the winning team. 08 HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL THERE BE IN A TEAM? The number of students in a team may range from 2 to 4, depending on the total number of participants who signed up for the competition. 09 DO I GET TO CHOOSE MY TEAMMATES? Teams will be assigned by the trainer on the second day of the boot camp. If you wish to team up with fellow participant(s), please inform the trainer when you report for the boot camp on the first day. Please note that this is strictly subject to approval. 012

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 10 WHEN ARE THE FINALS? The finals will be held on 24 June 2018 at Happy Sparks, an event organised by Times Experience. The venue is Our Tampines Hub, 1 Tampines Walk, Singapore 528523. There is no need to bring your own laptops and chargers as participants are expected to work on the official laptops provided at the finals.
