CHAPTER 4: LESSON SPECIFICATIONS COURSE TITLE: SILVER STAR COURSE ENABLING OBJECTIVE AND TEACHING POINTS CTS NUMBER: A-CR-CCP-116/PC-001 TRAINING DETAILS DRILL: 401.22 5. TIME Two 30 minute periods. 1. PERFORMANCE Order a platoon on parade. 2. CONDITIONS: a. Given words of command; and 6. METHOD/APPROACH: a. demonstration; and b. performance. 4-3/4-4 b. Denied assistance. 3. STANDARD The cadet will follow the correct fall-in procedure. 4. TEACHING POINTS: a. forming up prior to falling-in; b. sizing the platoon; c. action of the marker; d. action on the word of command FALL-IN; e. action of the platoon warrant officer when the platoon is handed over to the platoon commander; and f. action on the command RIGHT or LEFT DRESS, SHOULDER DRESSING or ELBOW DRESSING. 7. SUBSTANTIATION To enable cadets to take their place in the platoon and to carry out any sequence of drill movements that the platoon commander so orders. 8. REFERENCES: a. A-CR-CCP-121/PT-001 EO 401.22: ORDER A PLATOON ON PARADE Prior to falling in, the platoon will assemble in three ranks at the edge of the parade ground and stand at ease. The Platoon 2 I/C will detail one cadet to act as marker. The marker will then take up position as the right hand cadet of the front rank and stand at ease. The Platoon 2 I/C will then proceed onto the parade ground and halt three paces in front of where the Platoon 2 I/C wishes the marker to fall-in. On the command, "MARKER", the cadet detailed as marker will: a. come to attention and observe the standard pause; b. march in quick time to a position three paces in front of, and facing, the Platoon 2 I/C and halt; and c. remain at attention. The Platoon 2 I/C then turns right and marches to a position three paces in front and centre of where the platoon will fall-in. On the command, "FALL IN", platoon members will: a. come to attention; b. observe the standard pause; c. march on to the parade ground, halt on the left of and covering off the marker; and d. remain at attention. The Platoon 2 I/C may then call the roll, size the platoon, etc. If the platoon has supernumerary officers, WOs, and senior NCOs, the following procedure is carried out: a. The WOs and senior NCOs will form up in a supernumerary rank, three paces behind the rear rank, evenly spaced across the platoon frontage. They then will act on the orders of the Platoon 2 I/C; b. the supernumerary officers will be ordered to fall in by the platoon commander; and c. the Platoon 2 I/C will then proceed as required, eg "OPEN ORDER MARCH, RIGHT DRESS, EYES FRONT, STAND AT EASE." The platoon will then be handed over to the platoon commander in the following manner: 1-27

A-CR-CCP-121/PT-001 a. the Platoon 2 I/C calls the platoon to attention; b. the Platoon Commander halts two paces in front of the Platoon 2 I/C who salutes and, when the salute has been acknowledged, reports the platoon, eg "Good morning Sir, the platoon is formed up ready for your inspection, 32 other ranks on parade, two on sick parade, Sir." c. upon being ordered to fall-in, the Platoon 2 I/C salutes, and after the salute has been acknowledged, turns right and proceeds by a series of wheels around the right flank to take up position three paces centre and rear of the platoon; and d. the Platoon Commander marches forward two paces and occupies the Platoon 2 I/C former position. When the Platoon 2 I/C orders the right dress, the procedure as detailed previously is followed. The command "EYES FRONT" is ordered by the Platoon 2 I/C after the Platoon 2 I/C returns to the position in front of the platoon. SIZING IN SINGLE RANK AND REFORMING THREES On the command, TALLEST ON THE LEFT, SHORTEST ON THE RIGHT, IN SINGLE RANK SIZE, the squad shall turn right, observe the standard pause, then arrange themselves according to height in a single rank, at shoulder dressing, tallest on the right and shortest on the left. On the command, SQUAD NUMBER, the squad members will call out their number, counting from right to left. On the command, ODD NUMBERS ONE PACE FORWARD, EVEN NUMBERS ONE PACE STEP BACK MARCH, the squad shall act as ordered. On the command, NUMBER ONE STAND FAST, ODD NUMBERS RIGHT, EVEN NUMBERS LEFT TURN, the squad shall act as ordered. On the command, REFORM THREES QUICK MARCH, the squad reforms three ranks as follows: a. number one remains the right marker of the front rank; b. number three becomes the right marker of the centre rank; 1-28

A-CR-CCP-121/PT-001 c. number five becomes the right marker of the rear rank, and so on; and d. when each person arrives in their new position, judging arm s length interval, they shall halt, observe the standard pause, turn left, and remain at attention. EO 401.23: ADOPT PLATOON FORMATIONS FORMING A HOLLOW SQUARE The platoon will be in line in three ranks prior to forming hollow square. On the command, "FORM HOLLOW SQUARE, CENTRE RANK RIGHT, REAR RANK LEFT TURN", the platoon acts as ordered. On the command, "CENTRE RANK LEFT WHEEL, REAR RANK RIGHT WHEEL, QUICK MARCH", the platoon acts as ordered. The command, "MARK TIME", will be given when the rear cadets of the centre and rear ranks are one pace in front of the front rank. On the command, "PLATOON HALT", the platoon acts as ordered. On the command, "CENTRE RANK LEFT, REAR RANK RIGHT TURN", the platoon acts as ordered. The reverse procedure is used to re-form the platoon into three ranks. Regardless of frontage, when a platoon is formed up in line, the platoon commander will be positioned three paces in front and centre of the 1-29

A-PD-201-000/PT-000 ORDERING A PLATOON ON PARADE 12. A platoon is ordered on parade in a similar manner to falling in a squad (see Chapter 2). 13. The platoon warrant officer may then call the roll, size the platoon, etc. 14. Supernumerary officers, warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers act as follows: a. The warrant officers and senior noncommissioned officers will form up in a supernumerary rank, three paces behind the rear rank, evenly spaced across the platoon frontage. They will act on the orders of the platoon warrant officer. b. Supernumerary officers will be ordered to fall in by the platoon commander after he has taken over command as in company drill, Section 3, paragraph 24. 15. The platoon shall be handed over to the platoon commander in the following manner: a. The platoon warrant officer calls the platoon to attention as the platoon commander approaches. b. The platoon commander halts two paces in front of the platoon warrant officer, who salutes and, when his salute has been acknowledged, reports the strength, condition, etc., of the platoon. c. Upon being ordered to fall in, the platoon warrant officer salutes and, after the salute has been acknowledged, turns right and proceeds by a series of wheels around the right flank to take up his position in rear of the platoon. d. The platoon commander marches forward two paces to take up his position. RASSEMBLEMENT DU PELOTON 12. You may wish to use an additional period to complete the instruction. REVIEW TIME: 5 Minutes I EO 401.21: EXECUTE CHANGE STEP ON THE MARCH 1. Practice the following change step procedures: a. change step on the march in quick time; and b. change step when marking time. II Place the squad in the proper formation. INTRODUCTION TIME: 1 Minute WHAT: WHY: During this period of instruction cadets will learn how to order a platoon on parade. By ordering a platoon on parade, cadets are able to take their place in the platoon and carry out any sequence of drill movements that the platoon commander so orders. 2006-05-04 1/6

WHERE: Ordering a platoon on parade is a common procedure used whenever the unit is forming up for weekly parades or drill practices. BODY INSTR NOTES I STAGE 1: FORMING UP AND SIZING PRIOR TO FALL IN 1. Position of readiness: Prior to falling in, the platoon will assemble in three ranks at the edge of the parade ground and stand at ease. The platoon 2 I/C will detail one cadet to act as marker. The marker will then take up position as the right hand cadet of the front rank and stand at ease. The platoon 2 I/C will then proceed onto the parade ground and halt three paces in front of where the platoon 2 I/C wishes the marker to fall-in. 2. Sizing the platoon: A platoon is sized to align individual member s heights for aesthetic balance and give the best general impression to a spectator. a. on the command, TALLEST ON THE LEFT, SHORTEST ON THE RIGHT, IN SINGLE RANK-SIZE, the squad shall turn right, observe the standard pause, then arrange themselves according to height in a single rank, at shoulder dressing, tallest on the right and shortest on the left. TIME: 15 Minutes Explain the procedure to the cadets. Instructor must explain, and then have the cadets execute the movement. Correct faults as they occur. b. on the command SQUAD NUMBER, the squad shall act as ordered. c. on the command ODD NUMBERS ONE PACE FORWARD, EVEN NUMBERS ONE PACE STEP BACK MARCH, the squad shall act as ordered. d. on the command NUMBER ONE STAND FAST, ODD NUMBERS RIGHT, EVEN NUMBERS LEFT TURN, the squad shall act as ordered. e. on the command REFORM THREES, QUICK MARCH, the squad reforms three ranks as follows: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Number one remains the right-hand person of the front rank. Number three becomes the right-hand person in the centre rank. Number five becomes the right-hand person in the rear rank, and so on. When each person arrives in his new position, he 2/6

shall halt, at arm s-length interval, observe the standard pause, turn left and remain at attention. II CONFIRMATION STAGE 1 1. Have each cadet act on the commands for sizing. III STAGE 2: ORDERING A PLATOON ON PARADE 1. On the command, MARKER, the person detailed as marker will: a. come to attention and observe the standard pause; b. march in quick time to a position three paces in front of, and facing the instructor and halt; and TIME: 15 Minutes Instructor to demonstrate the procedure, and then have the cadets practices it. Correct faults as they occur. c. remain at attention. 2. The platoon 2 I/C then turns right and marches to a position three paces in front and center of where the platoon will fall-in. 3. On the command, FALL - IN, platoon members will: a. come to attention; b. observe the standard pause; c. march on to the parade ground, halt on the left of and covering off the marker; and Instructor must explain, and then have the cadets execute the movement. Correct faults as they occur. d. remain at attention. 4. The platoon 2 I/C may then proceed to call the roll, size the platoon etc. 5. If the platoon has supernumerary officers, WOs and senior NCOs, the following procedure is carried out: Explain the procedure to the cadets. a. the WOs and senior NCOs will form up in a supernumerary rank, three paces behind the rear rank, evenly spaced across the platoon frontage. ORDER - MARCH, RIGHT - DRESS, EYES - FRONT, STAND AT - EASE. 6. The platoon will then be handed over to the platoon commander in the following manner: a. the platoon 2 I/C calls the platoon to attention; b. the platoon commander halts two paces in front of the platoon 2 I/C who salutes and, when the salute has been acknowledged, reports the platoon, eg Good evening Sir or Madam, the platoon is formed up ready for your inspection, 32 etc ranks on parade, two on sick parade, Sir or Madam ; Explain the procedure to the cadets and then have them practice. When officers are not on parade, the Platoon WO will act in place of the Platoon Commander. c. upon being ordered to fall-in, the platoon 2 I/C salutes, and after the salute has been acknowledged, turns right and proceeds by a series of wheels around the right flank to take up position three paces center and rear of the platoon; and d. the platoon commander marches forward two paces and occupies the platoon 2 I/C former position. IV CONFIRMATION STAGE 2 1. Have each cadet act on the command MARKER. 2. Have the cadets, as a platoon, act on the command FALL - IN. 3. Have the cadets, as a platoon, act on the commands OPEN ORDER - MARCH, RIGHT - DRESS, EYES - FRONT, STAND - AT EASE. V STAGE 3: DRESSING A PLATOON 1. When the platoon commander wishes to dress the platoon, he shall face the platoon and order SHOULDER (ELBOW) DRESSING or RIGHT (LEFT) - DRESS. The platoon will act as ordered: a. the platoon 2 I/C steps off, wheels to the right, and marches six paces to the right of the right flank, wheels to the left and halts facing the front and in line with the front rank; b. the platoon 2 I/C then turns left and dresses the front rank. When the front rank is dressed, he orders FRONT RANK - STEADY ; 4/6 TIME: 10 Minutes Instructor to first demonstrate and explain, and then execute the movement. Correct faults as they occur.

c. the platoon 2 I/C then turns left, and keeping the arms at the side, paces off the interval between the front and center rank, halts, turns right, and dresses the rear rank. The platoon 2 I/C then orders CENTER RANK -STEADY ; d. the platoon then turns left and, keeping the arms at the side, again paces off the interval between the center and rear rank, halts, turns right and dresses the rear rank. The platoon 2 I/C then orders REAR RANK - STEADY ; e. the platoon commander orders EYES - FRONT, and the platoon 2 I/C steps off and by a series of wheels, halts in the original position in the rear of the platoon; and 2. When the platoon 2 I/C orders the right dress, the procedure as detailed previously is followed. The command EYES FRONT is ordered by the platoon 2 I/C after the platoon 2 I/C returns to the position in front of the platoon. IV CONFIRMATION STAGE 3 1. Practice dressing the platoon, by assigning the platoon warrant and platoon 2 I/C roles to different cadets. The remainder of the platoon must act as ordered. PERFORMANCE CHECK TIME: 12 Minutes I Cadets will follow the correct fall in procedure without error. 1.
