Welcome to the Nursing Combo Course at Peel campus This Course has been designed in collaboration with the Murdoch School of Health Professions to provide students with a unique opportunity to gain a formal qualification in Aged Care, whilst also gaining guaranteed entry to the Murdoch School of Health Professions to become a Registered Nurse (providing that all course requirements are met successfully). The Certificate IV in Ageing Support CHC43015 qualification you achieve will prepare you for work as Support Workers in adult day centres, or in-home support services. Students can also apply for employment as aides, multi-skilled support workers, nursing assistants, attendant carers or aged care support workers. The Certificate IV in Ageing Support CHC43015 was selected by Murdoch University as an appropriate entry level course for University studies. In your Nursing Combo year, you will be both a South Metropolitan TAFE student and a Murdoch University student. The course is designed to give an employment opportunity in Aged Care for ongoing university students whilst they continue their Nursing Degree, after completion of their Combo year. Admission requirements Applicants must be turning 18 or older in the year they commence the course. Read both application forms (one for South Metropolitan TAFE and the one for Murdoch University) and complete each in full. Attach any required documents and or information to your application (photocopies only please). ENGLISH PROFICIENCY: Applicants who have been educated overseas, require an overall English Proficiency IELTS result of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.5 speaking, reading, writing). Please also be aware that after completing your full BN with Murdoch, for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, you will require an IELTS of 7.0 Nursing Combo app pack Page 2 of 12

To be eligible for admission to the course you will need to meet the following criteria: Applicants with Year 12 qualifications (from within the last ten years) Minimum grade C in English Applicants without Year 12 qualifications Relevant TAFE Certificate; e.g. Certificate III in Aged Care Work/Individual Support Or Other relevant subjects or work experience. Already completed a CHC33015 Certificate III In Individual Support? Students, who have previously completed CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support Work, may be exempt from some units that form part of this Nursing Combo Course, this will be determined when you present your Certificate. 2. 3. For the Murdoch part of your application, you are required to complete a one (1) page personal statement outline. The statement outline must be typed - not handwritten. Use the headings below: i. Personal attributes you will bring to your role as a Peel Aged Care bridge to Registered Nursing combo student and state why you think these are important. ii. iii. Describe the ways you plan to contribute to the community as a result of completing the Nursing Combo course. Why you believe you should be offered a place in the course. Selection Process Applications are assessed by a panel made up of Murdoch University and South Metropolitan TAFE staff. Your applications do not go to Admissions or the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC). 1. You will be notified of the outcome of your application in writing 2. If you have been successful at gaining an interview for possible selection in the course, you will be notified by mail with a follow-up phone call 3. If you have not been selected for a place in the course, you may be offered an alternate pathway Following the interview process, successful candidates will be contacted and enrolment details will be explained. Individual Planning If you are offered a place on the course you will be required to attend a planning session with the South Metropolitan TAFE course co-ordinator at the time of enrolment. You will be provided with a timetable and academic calendar and will be assisted with the enrolment process at this time. IMPORTANT You are required to either pay your full semester fees for the South Metropolitan TAFE component of the course enrolment on this day OR you can commence a payment plan and complete the payments by the end of each semester, to do this you must pay a deposit to secure you place on the course at the time of enrolment. Transfer of credit If you have completed any of the qualification units, you may be eligible for mutual recognition. This means you do not have to redo the units or pay for enrolment into them. Note: for this to happen it MUST be the same name and National code and you must provide documented proof. The list of required units are at the end of this information booklet. Timetables South Metropolitan TAFE component: Semester 1 Commences in last week of January for 20 weeks, and involves 15 weeks on campus - followed by 4 weeks full time work placement in an Aged Care Facility. The placement is organised by TAFE. Classes are scheduled from Thursday to Friday generally between 8.30am and 4pm, however this may be subject to alteration. Timetables will be given out when you enrol for your first semester. Semester 2 Commences in July and you will then need to enrol for the second half of your course. As in semester 1, your course will include both institute based and workplace based training and assessment. This program also runs for 20 weeks. The class time to workplace ratio may vary according to the target group needs identified during semester 1 and the timing of your Uni exams or commitments. The finalised timetable for Semester 2 will be issued when you enrol in the second half of the course Term dates & breaks at South Metropolitan TAFE: School holidays and Public Holidays are breaks with South Metropolitan TAFE Attached is an Academic Calendar identifying your official TAFE breaks. Enrolments Students enrol separately for South Metropolitan TAFE and Murdoch University. You are supported to do this via the Course Co-ordinator and the Murdoch Student Services Officer. Both institutions have separate enrolment days and procedures. Books & other costs South Metropolitan TAFE: There are no additional book fees; these are included in your resource fees. To help you get prepared for your course, I suggest you have a lever arch for each day that you come to campus these files are larger, keep everything together easier & you don t lose anything if you drop them In your files have: file dividers ready file paper or a lecture pad clear plastic sleeves for handouts, PLUS extra clear plastic sleeves to submit any paper-based assessments (as we don t use staples as assessments are put through a photocopier & scanned) Other items you will need: Black / blue pens Highlighter USB (8GB minimum will be sufficient) Enclosed water bottle for classroom Clothing considerations: I include this for safety reasons, as your course involves hands-on training in our training room / classroom & also when participating in the first-aid class. Closed in, flat shoes (no heels, sandals or thongs) Pants / jeans / trousers as it will be safer for working with equipment in the training room Appropriate top / shirt If you have long hair, please be prepared to tie it back Technology items: You are welcome to bring in your own tablet, mobile phone etc. & use the free Wi-Fi available on the campus, but they are your responsibility. I allow mobile phones to be used in class (on silent) as they may be used as a tool - dictionary, translator, accessing our online resources, however these need to be used appropriately & not to disrupt other learners Please note you will be required to purchase a uniform top. Details will be provided. Murdoch University: No lectures, tutorials, uniforms or equipment are necessary for the BNR100 and BNR150 online units. Delivery level and content Certificate IV in Ageing Support CHC43015 This qualification addresses work primarily in Aged Care services within defined organisation guidelines and service plans. These workers: Carry out activities related to maintaining an individual s well being through personal care and/or other activities of living. May provide services to individuals with complex needs, and/or work with groups of older people. Work may include training and support to promote independence and community participation, which may be provided as part of activities and programs in a variety of settings including community and centre-based programs.
