Must-Do Activities Shakespeare in the Common Commonwealth Shakespeare Company presents professional productions of Shakespeare to Boston audiences during the summer months when local theatre companies tend to be on hiatus from their regular seasons, but when there are record numbers of people in the city. Now entering its 20th season, CSC s Shakespeare on the Common has become an annual Boston tradition, modeled along the lines of Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park and the many other free outdoor summer Shakespeare events throughout the country. Beginning in the summer of 1996, CSC Artistic Director Steven Maler collaborated with the City of Boston, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Mayor s Office for Cultural Affairs to present a free outdoor production of A Midsummer Night s Dream in Copley Square. This event was described by Ed Siegel of The Boston Globe as fully engaging, with one of the most diverse audiences ever seen in Boston. Midsummer was chosen as one of the top ten productions of 1996 by the Globe, and Mr. Maler received the Eliot Norton Award for his outstanding direction. Carolyn Clay of The Boston Phoenix wrote, how proud it is for Boston to finally offer free Shakespeare. Following the success of Midsummer, CSC presented Romeo and Juliet at the newly renovated Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common in August of 1997. Performing annually at the Parkman Bandstand centrally located, handicapped-accessible and accessible to all by public transportation CSC has become one of Boston s most attended annual arts events. Each summer CSC sees approximately 100,000 people on the Boston Common. In its 18 year history CSC has performed for over 1 million audience members! In September of 2013, CSC was named as the Theatre in Residence at Babson College. 139 Tremont St, Boston Cost A Boston tradition since 1996, CSC has been presenting fully-staged productions of Shakespeare plays free-of-charge to Boston audiences. http://commshakes.org

Must-Do Activities North End, Boston The North End is a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It has the distinction of being the city s oldest residential community, where people have continuously inhabited since it was settled in the 1630s. Though small, only 0.36 square miles (0.93 km2), the neighborhood has nearly one hundred establishments and a variety of tourist attractions. It is known for its Italian American population and fine Italian restaurants. Historical Trip The North End is home to twelve National Registered Historical Landmarks, these include: Old North Church, Paul Revere House, Union Warf and the Freedom Trail. Arts The North End Music and Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) and the Improv Asylum Theater are located on Hanover Street.[17] All Saints Way, a private art project located on Battery Street, is occasionally open to the public. It consists of framed portraits of Roman Catholic saints hung on a brick wall, some of which are visible from the street. Cuisine At the end of the 19th century the North End was filled with small restaurants that served inexpensive meals. In 1909, there were 12 active Italian restaurants, and by the 1930s a few of these restaurants were renowned. Today, the North End s streets are lined with cafes, small grocery stores, and Italian restaurants.[19] These restaurants are a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Sicilian immigrants also started food companies specializing in their native cuisine, which after successful expansion moved out of the neighborhood.[20] The Pastene company began as a family pushcart in the North End in 1848.[16] Beginning in 1912, Prince pasta was manufactured in the North End and sold at 92 Prince Street. (The brand is now owned by New World Pasta.) http://www.northendboston.com/ http://www.north-end-boston.com/ http://www.boston.com/travel/boston/2014/05/19/reasons-visit-the-northend/l0jt7zg3ov4f4co3iwn2cl/story.html

Taste of Boston The Bell in the Hand Tavern There aren t many historical sites where you can get a great meal and a cold beer, but you can at the oldest tavern in America. The Tavern has been around since 1795. A gathering place for printers and politicians, sailors and students, it quickly became the most famous alehouse in the city. What was it about the Bell that made it so popular? Maybe it was Jimmy Wilson, the first owner. Everybody in Boston knew Jimmy. Not that they had much choice. You see, Jimmy was Boston s town crier for fifty years. Good news or bad, Bostonians heard it all from Jimmy. He reported on everything from the Boston Tea Party to the birth of the nation. When he retired, he decided to open a tavern. He was proud of his former occupation and that s why he called the place the Bell-in-Hand. Maybe it was the ale. Not one for hard stuff, Jimmy refused to sell the whiskey, rum and gin so popular in other taverns of the day. No, only ale would be served at the Bell, but what an ale! So thick, it was served in two mugs, one for the ale and the second for the froth. Maybe it was the atmosphere. Everyone felt welcome at the Bell-in- Hand. It attracted folks from all walks of life who came for the ale and the lively conversation. Conversation must have easily come to the journalists, lawyers, actors and city leaders who made the Bell-in-Hand their unofficial headquarters. Even Daniel Webster was known to drop in! Yes, the Bell has always been the spot for a good time in Boston.. http://bellinhand.com Content copyright The Bell in the Hand Tavern. Energy Battery provides information for members benefits. Must-See s USS Constitution & Museum Launched in Boston in 1797, the oldest commissioned warship afloat earned her nickname Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 when she fought the British frigate HMS Guerriere. During this historic battle, cannonballs fired at USS Constitution appeared to bounce off, causing one of her crew to remark that her sides were made of iron. The USS Constitution is a well-traveled ship, having patrolled the West Indies, Brazil, and the West African coast and participated in the Barbary Wars. The ship is permanently berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard and ventures out several times a year into Boston Harbor, most notably on July 4th to celebrate our nation s Independence Day. Today, more than 216 years later, she is still a commissioned U.S. Navy warship with a crew of naval officers and enlisted personnel. Must-See s The Old State House Known today as the Old State House, this building was the center of Boston s civic life in the 18th century and the scene of some of the most dramatic chapters in the lead-up to the American Revolution. Within these walls, Samuel Adams, James Otis, John Hancock, and John Adams debated the future of the British colonies. Just outside the building, five men were among the first casualties of the battle for independence, in what would later be known as the Boston Massacre. The Declaration of Independence was proclaimed from the balcony to the citizens of Boston in 1776. History happened here. After the American Revolution, the building served as the first state house for the newly-formed Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Then it was used for a variety of purposes in the 19th century, including shopping arcade, city hall, post office, merchants exchange, and offices. In 1881 The Bostonian Society restored the building, and has operated it as a museum ever since. As you explore the Old State House Museum, you will discover wonderful stories about the people and events that shaped the history of the city, colony, state, and nation. Two floors of exhibitions tell the story of the role the building and Boston played in the American Revolution. Other exhibitions highlight the collections of The Bostonian Society. See tea from the Boston Tea Party and John Hancock s coat; listen to testimony from the Boston Massacre trial; view paintings of Boston harbor and other Boston treasures. Hands-on History galleries on the second floor provide interactive exhibitions for families with children. 206 Washington St., Boston, MA, 02109 Hours of operation May 26 - September 1: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All other days: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cost Adults $10.00, Seniors (62+) $8.50, Students $8.50 Youth (6-18) FREE, Members, US Military, and Veterans FREE

Must-See s Paul Revere s House On the night of April 18, 1775, silversmith Paul Revere left his small wooden home in Boston s North End and set out on a journey that would make him into a legend. Today that home is still standing at 19 North Square and has become a national historic landmark. It is downtown Boston s oldest building and one of the few remaining from an early era in the history of colonial America. The home was built about 1680 on the site of the former parsonage of the Second Church of Boston. Increase Mather, the Minister of the Second Church, and his family (including his son, Cotton Mather) occupied this parsonage from 1670 until it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1676. A large and fashionable new home was built at the same location about four years later. https://www.paulreverehouse.org/ http://home.nps.gov/long/learn/ news/upload/lhb%2012.1.08.pdf The red coats are coming!!! 19 North Square, Boston Hours of operation Open Daily 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. (Average Visit is 30-45mins) Cost Adults $3.50 Seniors and College Students $3.00 Children (ages 5-17) $1.00

Must-See s Bunker Hill Park and Museum The Battle of Bunker Hill pitted a newly-formed and inexperienced colonial army against the more highly trained and better-equipped British. Despite the colonial army s shortcomings, it was led by such capable men as Colonel William Prescott, Colonel John Stark and General Israel Putnam, who had experience fighting alongside the British in the French and Indian War. * Today, a 221-foot granite monument marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution. Bunker Hill Monument is part of the Boston National Historical Park, a unique collaboration of federally, municipally, and privately owned and operated historic sites associated with the colonial struggle for independence linked by a red brick or painted line weaving through Downtown Boston and surrounding areas. Must-See s Old North Church Founded in 1722, Christ Church in the City of Boston, known to all as the Old North Church, is Boston s oldest surviving church building and one of its most visited historical sites. The enduring fame of the Old North began on the evening of April 18, 1775, when the church sexton, Robert Newman, and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution. Located on Boston s Freedom Trail, there is more to see than the 300 year old church building.
