2018 Biennial Southeastern Regional H. S. Artists Competition @ Birmingham-Southern College About the Competition This biennial visual arts competition is hosted by the Art & Art History Department and Admissions Office at Birmingham-Southern College. The purpose of this competition is to recognize and promote talented rising artists in the Southeastern United States. The winning artists will be listed in the Sunday 14 th January publication of The News (previously The Birmingham News). All winners and finalists will receive a certificate suitable for framing. Who s Eligible? The competition is open to all students attending grades 9 through 12 in one of the ten (10) Southeastern states whose teachers recognize exemplary visual artwork. No entry fee. Entry Forms 1) Instructors/Teachers are responsible for filling-out the attachments pertaining to this competition so all material is consistent following entry specifications. 2) Teachers are limited to no more than twelve (12) original pieces (no more than two [2] per student) from exemplary artwork completed within the past two (2) years. 3) Incomplete entry forms and information sheets will not be accepted. Specifications 1) Teachers submit digital submissions: a. JPG format 144 dpi; no longer than 1200 X 1200; b. A maximum of one (1) digital image per Two-Dimensional work and a maximum of two (2) digital images per Three-Dimensional work may be submitted; c. Two-Dimensional images must state Height, Width, and Media; d. Three-Dimensional images must state Height, Width, Depth, and Media; e. Digital files must be identified by High School Initials, Instructor s Name, Artist s Name, and Entry Number per student. Please follow this example: HHS_Smith_Doe1... a or b f. Digital images are assumed to be accurate representations of the actual work. Jurors reserve the right to reject any accepted work not accurately represented by digital image. Artist Information & Notification for Accepted Works All submitting artists will be notified by e-mail of selection decisions. No selection decisions of award winners will be released until the Awards Presentation. 1) Accepted artwork must be accompanied by the Artwork Competition Form. This must be filled out, completed-in-full, and firmly attached by the teacher (i.e. Two-Dimensional work on the back; Three- Dimensional work on a flat surface). 2) Do not combine work from multiple teachers nor classes in one package unless designation of each teacher s students can be easily verified when received. 3) A final Student Information Sheet should accompany the individual teachers students work list. Instructors/Teachers are to email a list of the accepted students works which must include the Social Security number of those to receive cash awards or awards will not be processed. 4) All work must be delivered in sturdy, reusable containers for receiving and shipping. Shipped work(s) must be accompanied by return prepaid shipping paperwork. 5) The installation direction must be indicated on the back of flat pieces. 6) DO NOT USE STYROFOAM PEANUTS, however; bubble-wrap and paper are acceptable. 7) Address accepted work(s) to be shipped to: o 2018 Biennial Southeastern Regional H. Deadline for DELIVERY of all ACCEPTED work: Friday 1 December 2017 (regardless of delivery choice) by 5:00 p.m. Call 205.226.4928 and email the art office at art@bsc.edu to apprise them of your delivery day, date, and time. Exhibition & Awards The Biennial Southeastern Competition Awards Presentation will be held in the Norton Theater housed in the Norton Campus Center on Sunday 21 st January 2018 at 1:00 p.m. All artwork will remain displayed until the close date of the exhibition. No artwork will be removed during the run of the exhibition for any reason. Following the awards ceremony, a formal reception for the accepted artists will be held in the Durbin Gallery housed in the Doris Wainwright Kennedy Art Center & Azar Studios from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Exhibition will close on Thursday 25 th January 2018 at 4:45 p.m. Pick-Up & Return Shipping of Accepted Works All hand-delivered artwork must be picked up no later than Friday 3 rd February 2018. All shipped artwork will go out no later than Friday 3 rd February 2018. Street addresses are to be used for return shipping as U.P.S. will not deliver to Post Office Boxes.
Publicity Images of the exhibited artwork will be placed on the Birmingham-Southern College s Art & Art History website at: https://www.bsc.edu/academics/art/hs-art.html and will also be publicized in The News (previously The Birmingham News). REMEMBER Accepted work(s) will not be removed prior to exhibition closing date. Work can be picked up and will be returned the first business week following the close of the exhibition.
