HIGHLIGHTS COMMEMORATION CEREMONY FOR 129 Ewha celebrated its 129th anniversary at the Welch- Ryang Auditorium on Friday, May 29. President Choi Kyunghee announced in her commemoration speech, In 1886, American missionary Mary F. Scranton started teaching classes for women at her home in Jeong-dong with only one student. Since that time, Ewha has made its history as the leading pioneer in fostering global female talent towards profound contribution to society. th President Choi Kyunghee, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ewha Womans University Chang Myong-Sue, Honorary President Yoon Hoo-Jung, faculty members, and esteemed guests participated in this commemorative event. UN SECRETARY-GENERAL RECEIVES EWHA HONORARY DOCTORAL DEGREE Ewha Womans University awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Women s Studies to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations. President Choi Kyunghee stated, Ewha has decided to award an honorary doctoral degree to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who has committed himself to women s empowerment and social justice. Secretary-General Ban is widely acknowledged as the most avid advocate for women s rights since the foundation of the United Nations. In his acceptance speech, Secretary-General Ban said, I commend President Choi Kyunghee for her visionary leadership in Ewha Womans University and I humbly accept on behalf of billions of women in the world who deserve greater empowerment, dignity, and rights. Ewha has conferred 107 honorary doctoral degrees to prominent individuals such as Tarja Kaarina Halonen, 11th President of Finland (2002), Mary Patricia McAleese, 8th President of Ireland (2005), Michelle Bachelet, 34th & 36th President of Chile (2009), and Angela Dorothea Merkel, 21th-23th Chancellor of Germany (2010). JACKSON LAB KOREA LED BY DISTINGUISHED PROF. CHARLES LEE To increase its contribution to biotechnology research, Ewha plans to launch the Jackson Laboratory Korea in cooperation with DNA Link, Inc. The lab will be led by Charles Lee, Ewha s Distinguished Professor and Scientific Director of the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, with two action plans to launch a research center for the analysis of genomes for the development of a customized cancer treatment and to establish a so-called bio bank in which researchers breed avatar mice having distinct features of Korean patients. Best known for his discovery of genome-wide structural genomic variants, he has been nominated as a Nobel Prize candidate this year. As part of the collaboration, 9 graduate students of Ewha participated in a short training session at the Jackson Laboratory and an EWHA-JAX Joint Symposium on Genomic Medicine is being planned at the moment. 02

ACADEMIC EVENTS EWHA OFFERS K-MOOC The Ministry of Education selected Ewha as 1 of 10 pilot universities to launch the Korean-Massive Open Online Course (K-MOOC). Ewha s K-MOOC, which will begin during the second half of this year, will include Modern Physics and the Change of Human Thinking by Kim Chanju (Physics), Understanding of Movie Storytelling by Lyou Chulgyun (Digital Media/Korean Language & Literature, renowned novelist who goes by the name of Lee In-hwa), Human Action and Society Structure by Hahm Inhee (Sociology), and Socio Cultural History Interpreted by Architecture by Yim Seockjae (Architecture). For the first time in Korea, Ewha started its MOOC service via itunes U in March 2013. The program started initially with 8 coursewares consisting of 132 courses has since grown triple to 11 coursewares and 477 courses. ADVANCEMENT OF COLLEGE EDUCATION PROGRAM Ewha was selected to be one of the newest members amongst universities for the Advancement of College Education (ACE) program on July 6, operated by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Council for Education. Since 2010, the ACE program has offered 4 years of financial support to limited a number of universities in order to develop leading models for undergraduate programs. Unlike any other support program, ACE is the epitome of a special program whose goals are to foster universities towards teaching on a superior level and to aim for qualitative development of college education. Ewha will continuously and consistently strive to nurture global elite students with the right values and creative intelligence for the era of consilience, as well as to teach convergence by developing various leading models for undergraduate programs. EWHA S VISION FOR REUNIFICATION: 2 ND YOON HOo-JUNG REUNIFICATION FORUM AND SARU The 2nd Yoon Hoo-Jung Reunification Forum was held under the theme of 70 years Since Independence and Division: Reunification and Woman on May 13. The Forum is an annual event made possible with Dr. Yoon s donation of a billion KRW in 2013. Dr. Yoon has worked for Ewha for over 60 years and has also served as the 10th President from 1990 to 1996. This year, with the topic of Reunification and Woman, 13 Ewha students were invited and granted special scholarships to participate in the Summer Academy Reunification (SARU), programmed to address the reunification process in Korea by analyzing that of Germany. For two weeks from July 1, students and faculty members attended SARU at the University of Rostock. Ewha has prepared for reunification through the introduction of interdisciplinary program of North Korean Studies in 1998, the opening of undergraduate interdisciplinary study course for North Korean Studies in 2000, and the establishment of the Institute of Unification Studies in 2005. With the Yoon Hoo-Jung Reunification Forum and SARU, Ewha hopes to play a pivotal role in the reunification of the Korean peninsula. 03

STUDENT ACTIVITIES FATHER-DAUGHTER HIKE DAY In celebration of the National Family Month of May, Father-Daughter Hike Day was held on May 6 as part of Ewha Father s Day event. 100 father-daughter groups participated to hike and walk the Ansan Jarak-Gil right behind Ewha campus. The event, first of its kind at Ewha, received much positive feedback from fathers and students as they developed a closer bond with each other while the fathers felt more welcome and engaged within the Ewha community. President Choi Kyunghee and faculty members also participated to share Ewha s recent developments and to interact with participants in a casual setting. EWHA VOLUNTEERS SHARE LOVE Ewha s volunteer team, committed to providing education volunteer programs and Ewha Medical Care service, visited Cambodia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam during January 2015. The overseas education volunteer team visited Cambodia and engaged in cultural exchange and teaching through the Ewha Social Services Center, located in Phnom Penh. The Ewha Medical Care team, consisting of doctors, nurses, intern/resident doctors and students, visited Uzbekistan and Vietnam to serve health and medical care activities. The Ewha Volunteer Team was first formed in 2000 and from since has volunteered in educational, medical, and architectural public services at a national and international level. MEETING MESSIAH THROUGH BALLET Ewha Womans University s Department of Dance, in conjunction with Ewha University Alumnae Association, held the 12th ballet concert under the theme of Meeting Messiah through Ballet on April 25. Professor Shin Eun Kyung choreographed this piece based on the life of Jesus Christ as portrayed in the Bible and the Ewha Ballet Ensemble performed along the music piece from Messiah, composed by George Frideric Handel. The worldrenowned Ewha Ensemble, directed by Shin Eun Kyung, performed this ballet concert in New York, Boston, and other cities in the United States. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE & COLLEGE OF PHARMACY: 100% PASS RATE ON NATIONAL EXAMINATION IN 2015 Ewha School of Medicine and the College of Pharmacy recorded a 100% pass rate on the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination in their respective fields. 73 students from Ewha School of Medicine and 123 students from the College of Pharmacy have earned this honor. Ewha School of Medicine and the College of Pharmacy have been recognized for their excellent and advanced education curriculum since their foundation in 1945. Ewha took initiative to educate the 21st century female leaders in medicine and pharmacy through a variety of programs such as the Woman Leadership Camp, Ewha s Linkage Fellowship Program, Medical Ethics Conference, Ewha Pharm Challenge and other volunteer services. 04

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (1/3) PARTNERSHIP WITH UN WOMEN On May 18, United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka met with President Choi Kyunghee to renew and expand the partnership with Ewha. Since 2015 Ewha has collaborated with UN Women in educating women working in non-governmental, nonprofit sectors in developing countries across Asia and Africa through the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGEP). During this visit, it has been agreed to expand the scope of collaboration to the student level, by offering internship opportunities to Ewha students at UN Women. Having devoted her career for human rights, Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngc has formerly served as the Deputy President of South Africa, being the very first female Deputy President in the country. GENDER, HEALTH, & ENVIRONMENT IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Gender, Health and Environment in Sustainable Development international conference on global public health was hosted by the Institute for Development and Human Security on May 11. The conference seeks to raise awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and was held as a part of the research project, Advocacy for Korean Engagement in Global Health and Development, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and of the research project, Exploring the Social Determinants of Health in the Developing World: A Comparative Study of Why and How Social Capital Matters, funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea. Dr. Sonia Feigenbaum, Associate Provost of Global Engagement and Dr. Susan Cu-Uvin, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Brown University delivered the congratulatory remarks and keynote speech, respectively. EWHA-HARVARD SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM 10 th On June 27, the Ewha-Harvard Summer School Program (EHSSP) celebrated its 10th anniversary. EHSSP is the only jointly sponsored summer session program with Harvard University, a collaboration of the Ewha Graduate School of International Studies, the Harvard Summer School and Harvard Korea Institute. During the current 2015 EHSSP session, Prof. Paul Chang (Harvard University) and Prof. David Chung (University of Michigan) led the course Cinema Korea: Documenting Korean Society Through Film, with Korean language courses taught by Ewha instructors. 9 Harvard students and 14 Korean students from Ewha and other universities joined the summer school this year. Over the past 10 years, around 200 students have participated in this meaningful program. 1 ST EWHA-LUCE INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR Ewha hosted the 1st Ewha-Luce International Seminar: Expanding Horizons in conjunction with the Henry Luce Foundation. Founded in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time, Inc., the Luce Foundation seeks to be a catalyst for learning and leadership. The foundation chose Ewha as a partner in 2013 and agreed to allocate 1.5 million dollars in grants to support the program. Graduate students from MIT, Cornell, Georgia Tech, along with Ewha and other Korean universities majoring in the area of IT, nanotechnology, aviation, and convergence technology have participated in the seminar. As part of the seminar, an Open Forum was held under the theme Women in the History of Science, and Current Issues in Science and Science of the Future. 05

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (2/3) 2015 EWHA INTERNATIONAL CO-ED SUMMER COLLEGE 2015 International Co-Ed Summer College opened on June 23, as a venue for young talented people around the world to gather and study Korea as a subject. Ewha founded the program in 1971, and the program now has been running for over 40 years of history and tradition. Participants of the sessions can choose from approximately 30 courses on various themes, such as North Korean Studies, Women s Studies, Humanities, Korean Music, Art & Design, etc. offered in English. Korean language classes are also provided with proficiency-based grouping. Field trip opportunities are available every Friday including visits to the Korean Folk Village and House of Sharing, making Kimchi, and watching Korean movies. 2015 EXCHANGE & STUDY ABROAD FAIR On May 6, the Office of International Affairs held its very first Exchange & Study Abroad Fair at the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC). 41 International students from 21 countries and 52 different universities along with 34 Ewha students who had participated in an exchange or study abroad program happily volunteered to run the booths and interact with fellow students. The fair was a success, attracting nearly 500 Ewha students. They received information on college life, weather, culture, etc. of the universities they were interested in. Every year, around 3,700 international students visit Ewha for short or long term programs and about 1,600 Ewha students go abroad to participate in international exchange programs. MEMBERS OF AMBASSADOR SPOUSES ASSOCIATION IN SEOUL VISIT EWHA Members of the Ambassador Spouses Association in Seoul visited Ewha on April 29 to further learn about the past, present and future of Ewha Womans University, Korea s best leading institution for fostering women s leadership. By visiting various volunteer organizations and taking part in activities for cultural experiences, the Ambassador Spouses Association in Seoul hoped to broaden the boundaries of personal diplomacy. This was their first visit to a Korean university. The members participated in Professors Cho Sung-Nam s (Director of Ewha Institute for Leadership Development) lecture, Ewha and Woman Leadership, and were given a campus tour where they visited the Ewha Archives and Ewha Museums. Additionally, they had the opportunity to meet and communicate with current Ewha students from their countries. The members of the association who participated in this visit highly valued Ewha for being a global leader and showed their interests in the admission for international students and scholarship programs. 06

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (3/3) STRENGHTENED PARTNERSHIP WITH INDIANA UNIVERSITY In March, President Choi Kyunghee hosted President Michael McRobbie of Indiana University, Bloomington and discussed ways to promote mutual academic friendship, develop further exchange and cooperative efforts, and elevate the level of strategic partnership between the two universities. Discussions at the meeting involved innovation and reform strategies of the world s leading universities. Following the establishment of a university-wide agreement in 2009, Ewha and Indiana University renewed the MOU to facilitate mutual objectives in research and education. Ewha has collaborated with Indiana University in the fields of music, education, and law through departmental agreements. During this summer, two undergraduates majoring in pharmacy and chemistry & nano science were selected to take part in the Indiana University Summer Research Program for 8 weeks, where they are matched with a faculty based on one s area of interest. PRESIDENT CHOI VISITS HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE President Choi Kyunghee visited leading universities in Hong Kong and Singapore to promote international cooperation and strengthen Ewha s global network. On March 12-13, President Choi visited Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Korean International School of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology to discuss collaboration of research and student exchange between Ewha and respective universities. On April 1-2, President Choi visited Singapore Korean International School, and Nanyang Technological University, and attended a meeting with Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education at Singapore Ministry of Education. EWHA FACULTY WON RECOGNITION IN THE WORLD Professor Wu Jeongweon, director of CNRS-Ewha Research Center and Quantum Metamaterials Research Center was selected as a winner of the prestigious Ordre des Palmes Académiques from the French Government. The Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms) is an Order of Chivalry of France selectively designated for distinguished figures in the world of culture and education. A decoration was founded by Emperor Napoléon to honor eminent members in 1808. Jérôme Pasquier, Ambassador of France, said, This order is to display the French government s appreciation towards Professor Wu, not only for his efforts to increase harmonious collaboration between Ewha s and the French educational institutes, but also for expanding the cultural and educational exchange between Korea and France. EWHA WELCOME CENTER REOPENS Ewha Welcome Center, the very first university public relations center in Korea, reopened on January 5, 2015. The center underwent renovation in order to strengthen its function as the campus information center and to reinforce Ewha s global brand power. The pictogram i, standing for information, and two large screens were installed to bring attention and easily guide visitors towards the location of the Welcome Center. While iinformation was previously provided only in Korean and English, Chinese interpretation was added to the exhibition as well as a new resting area for the visitors. The center, which was established in 2013, is comprised of an information desk, an exhibition lounge, photo zone and a gift shop. It has welcomed 50,000 visitors since its opening.
