Preventing post-operative urinary retention Background Post-operative urinary retention (PO-UR) is common after surgery - 5%- 70% depending on the kind of surgery/patient risk profile Catheterisation lengthens a patient s hospital stay after surgery, and poses significant added risks, like urinary infection Aim To identify what factors make it more/less likely that a patient will develop PO-UR and what can be done to treat PO-UR. To develop and evaluate a protocol to reduce the incidence of PO-UR Methods 2 x systematic review of the literature, to identify risk factors and treatments for PO-UR.
