As of Thursday, February 14, 2013, the post continues to lead the 5th District (Lake, Marin, Napa, Sonoma and Solano Counties) and Area 1 (Northern California). We will celebrate our success at our Birthday Party on Saturday, March 9th. Be sure to RSVP to Bob Taylor with the number of members and guests attending. His phone number and email is listed on the back page. Would you like to participate in the FFA Parade on the evening of Thursday, March 23, 2013? We are looking for 50 members and friends of the American Legion Family to carry the 50 state flags. There will be practice sessions before the parade. Please email sotoyome111@aol.com with FFA Parade in the subject line or call Commander Tom at 707-481-9169. We need to know rather quickly if we have enough participants. Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves again this year as they consumed 2500 pounds of crab and over 12 gallons of sauce. A big Thank You goes to those who stepped up to help make the evening the success it was. Poppy Wreath Makers at Work President Nancy hosted a group of Unit 111 members to put together poppy wreaths that will be used for Memorial Day and throughout the year. The poppies are made by Veterans living at the California Veteran Homes. Let Nancy know if you would like to participate in future work sessions.

Page 2 March 2013 From the Top Tom Grimes, Commander On Sunday, February 3rd, I had the honor of presenting a Blue State Banner to Phyllis and Brian Maurer at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Healdsburg. Their son Evan is one of our newest members. We would like to present the Blue Star Banners to other Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor families with sons or daughters on active duty. You can call or email Commander Tom. At the February board meeting it was decided that the post would stop furnishing official American Legion hats to new members. As our bar revenue continues to drop and our expenses continue to rise we need to take a closer look at how we spend our money. We will be hosting the 5th District Meeting on Saturday, March 23rd. Post and Unit leadership from Lake, Marin, Napa, Sonoma and Solano Counties will gather at the Villa. Our very own Ron Collier, President of the Sotoyome American Legion Chapter 111, will be making a presentation on the Missing In America Program. Doors open at 9am and the meetings will start at 10am. There is a lunch break and the meetings are usually over by 3pm. Please call Commander Auxiliary Happenings Nancy Evers, President Congratulations ladies, there is a good chance that by the time you receive this newsletter we will have reached our goal of 152 members. Thank you to Linda and Melanie and everyone else who helped. Our annual birthday party is coming up on March 9th. See the back page. The cost is $5 if your dues are paid up but $15 if they are not. You can pay your dues at the dinner! See you there! Don t forget to check for unused fabric and yarn. We still have ladies making lap blankets for Yountville. You can bring it to the meeting or call Nancy or Rose. Phone numbers are on page 4. Chaplain s Corner Auxiliary Chaplain Bettie Crandall. During the past month I have sent these cards: congratulations to Bud Simmons and his new bride Phyllis who were married in New Zealand; a Welcome Home from Afghanistan card to Jessamyn Sobecki-Eagle, a former Unit member; and Sympathy cards to Edie Pressey (Unit 21) and Wenonah Angier Fifth District Secretary. Both lost their husbands. I have also made phone calls to several members who have been ill or had surgery to check on their well being. I m sure there must be some who have the flu or have had it, but I haven t been told of anyone. Please let your me know when you become aware of someone who needs a card. My phone number is 707-838-4035. From the Top Continued Tom or email if you plan on attending. There will be coffee and pastries before the meeting and lunch will be served. The cost is normally around $10.00. I could use raffle prizes. As the 2nd Vice Commander for the district I conduct the raffle, which is one of their only fundraisers. Call me at 707-481-9169 if you can donate a prize or you can bring it to the March meeting on the 14th.

March 2013 Page 5 Sotoyome Son s Update Al Delsid, Squadron Commander I would like to take this opportunity to thank all SAL members who helped out at our annual crab feed on February 2 nd. I think everyone did a good job and helped make the event a great success. As many of you know, I have been working on organizing a new squadron in Cloverdale. At this time, I have recruited seven new members and have three to go to make the necessary 10 to form the new squadron. I am hoping to have everything submitted by the end of March. I am hoping to have the squadron chartered by July 1. On February 10 th, I attended a SAL leadership training session in Rio Linda, Ca. In attendance were the California SAL Detachment Commander; Mark Smith, Senior Vice-Commander; Chris Affolter, Detachment Adjunct; Ned Fox and Area 1 Commander; Wayne Bean. This training session was a great resource in materials and contacts to help with the formation of the new squadron. Once again, Thank you to all who participated in the crab feed. I would like to make a special mention of one of our younger SAL members, Cassius Zapalski for being a hard worker with a great attitude. Cassius has been at most of our events and has been a great helper Thank You Cassius. 4th Friday POT LUCK AND GAMES at the Villa Annex! At this time we will not appoint one. The FFA Parade was discussed and no one volunteered to march in the Parade and carry a State Flag. The upcoming Prune Packers BBQ on May 4, 2013, was discussed. Planning continues on our annual ride dedicated to the fallen from Sonoma County. This year s event will be held on May 18, 2013 and will be dedicated to Patrick O Day, who was the first fallen from Sonoma County. We will again start at Bad Ass Coffee Shop at Old Redwood Hwy and Mark West Springs Road at 9am.
