Overview The Center fr Transprtatin Equity, Decisins and Dllars (CTEDD) invites qualified applicants t apply fr Spring 2018 Dctral Dissertatin and Master s Thesis Research Fellwships. This grant is part f the University Transprtatin Center (UTC) prgram funded by the U.S. Department f Transprtatin (USDOT). Please see utc.dt.gv fr mre infrmatin. The Center fr Transprtatin Equity, Decisins and Dllars (CTEDD) is a cnsrtium f five universities leading transprtatin plicy research that imprves ecnmic develpment thrugh the mre efficient and cst effective use f existing transprtatin systems, and ffers better access t jbs and pprtunities. CTEDD will address these needs thrugh the innvative use f cutting edge technlgy and plicies that harness private resurces fr public infrastructure. CTEDD and its cnsrtium members aim t serve their fast grwing regins and the natin as a whle thrugh varius prgrams that expand ecnmic prsperity, prvide utreach t plicy makers, address infrastructure needs thrugh innvative methds, and educate future leaders f the transprtatin field. Fellwships up t $10,000 fr dissertatin research and $5,000 fr thesis research will be awarded t cver expenses fr the recipient while wrking n their research. CTEDD is fcused n cntributing t transprtatin related research that supprts innvatin in the fcus areas discussed belw. FOCUS AREA 1: Creative use f Existing Infrastructure fr Future Transprtatin Needs: Using existing lanes and tracks fr alternative shared mbility ptins, such as van pls, high speed rail, and reginal express buses. Integratin f new technlgy (such as big data cllectin technlgies, infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies, autmated vehicles, micrtransit, LiDar) int the current transprtatin systems. Smart land use, and transprtatin designs and plicies that enhance transit ridership. Enhancing shared use mbility ptins fr bradening access t jbs and services.
FOCUS AREA 2: Innvative Funding Strategies fr Future Transprtatin Infrastructure, and Better Maintenance f Existing Infrastructure: Understanding and reslving plitical and financial bstacles, as well as systemic inefficiencies t meeting infrastructure maintenance needs. Smart transprtatin investment strategies, and use f new revenue cncepts fr prper maintenance f transprtatin infrastructure. Challenges and benefits f leveraging private investment t supprt transprtatin infrastructure. Impact f funding stream challenges fr maintaining transit peratins. FOCUS AREA 3: Transprtatin Systems, Ecnmic Cmpetitiveness, and Equal Access: Transprtatin, access t pprtunities, and upward mbility. Ecnmic develpment and supprtive transprtatin cncepts. FOCUS AREA 4: Emplying Big Data and Innvative Techniques t Imprve System Efficiency: Imprving efficiency f radway repairs and maintenance using perfrmance based data cllectin and mining. Measuring efficiency and equality f transprtatin service. Upgrading traditinal public participatin in transprtatin decisin making. Online media, scial marketing and transprtatin user s experience. FOCUS AREA 5: Ensuring Transprtatin System Vitality thrugh Perfrmance Management and Mnitring Systems: Maintenance f transprtatin infrastructure Using Remte Sensing/Phtgrammetry Technlgies. Evaluating efficiency and effectiveness f internal plicies such as prcurement, cntracting, and asset management. Reliable transprtatin infrastructure asset management framewrk develpment based n sensing/instrumentatin, perfrmance data and available financial resurces. Integrating mixed mdes with existing transprtatin infrastructure. FOCUS AREA 6: Transprtatin Plicy and Decisin Making: Understanding the challenges f sub state, lcal transprtatin plicy and decisin making, such as infrastructure rights f way, and plitical r financial bstacles. Eligibility Students must be a U.S. Citizen r permanent resident and have advanced t candidacy fr their Ph.D. degree r have advanced t thesis research in their Master s prgram prir t the applicatin deadline. CTEDD fellwships are pen t students currently enrlled in a transprtatin related prgram at the University f Texas at Arlingtn, University f Suth Flrida, Califrnia Plytechnic State University, Gergia Institute f Technlgy, and University f Wiscnsin Madisn. Successful fellwship prpsals will cmbine advanced research with applied prjects that are suited fr ne r mre f the CTEDD fcus areas, linking t articulated U.S. DOT pririties, specifically livability, envirnmental sustainability, and safety. 3. Hw t Apply All applicatins must be submitted by January 31 st, 2018. Please cmplete the fellwship applicatin frm (belw) and cmpile as a single PDF. Include all ther requested infrmatin frm the frm within the same PDF. 4. Selectin Prcess The pl f applicants will be reviewed by a cmmittee f faculty frm CTEDD partner campuses. Fellwships will be awarded n the basis f the cmmittee s assessment f the riginality and significance f the research tpic, the applicant s verall recrd f academic and prfessinal accmplishment, and the relevance f the research tpic t current issues in transprtatin as it relates t the CTEDD fcus areas. Applicants must be in the final year f their prgram, expecting t defend their dissertatin r present their thesis within ne year f the award dispersal. 5. Other Terms and Cnditins 1. Fellwships are awarded t cver student expenses while wrking n the dissertatin/thesis. 2. Awards are cnditinal n the student wrking n the tpic as described in the fellwship applicatin. If the student decides fr any reasn t change tpics r t terminate studies, the student must ntify CTEDD immediately and a pr rata share f the fellwship must be returned. 3. Award recipients must prvide a paper cpy and electrnic versin in PDF f the dissertatin/thesis when it is cmpleted. 4. Award recipients agree t acknwledge CTEDD supprt in the research itself and in any publicatins that may stem frm it. 5.
