London and Ealing Ambitions How do we build understanding of the London employment opportunities? How do we inform young people, parents and even teachers about job and career pathways in the capital? How do we support more vulnerable young people to get into work?

Challenge perceptions Pupils gain knowledge from many sources, some of them inaccurate The London labour market is a long way away So: Knowledge is the key to effective guidance Not starting at age 14; much earlier

How are we doing this? London Ambitions has been a catalyst - building capacity to have a life as a sustainable Londoner Partnership - we use our networks with partners to give key messages about skills - shared headlines Annual 14-19 Conference has focus on LMI/skills Ealing-focused presentation about LMI in Central and West London we compile - available for our schools, colleges and training providers and other partners Employer engagement need much more big challenge for London esp. suburbs Still a Connexions buy-back service; local knowledge

What can the system do better? Bring the world of work and employment into school from an early age London Ambitions Maths will be the cornerstone of most sustainable London careers and jobs in the future, but will English become the main barrier? Everyone should understand what jobs are out there and what skills are needed for future jobs from HE applicants to those with few qualifications Keep STEM pathways open (to HE and Apprenticeships) for as many as possible for as long as possible Be honest about the burden of student debt be prepared to promote alternatives
