C. Major Problems 1. During the ea ly months of the deployment, the absense of any large construction project reduced he overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Battal on. Throughout the middle of the deployment wrk on many projects was no iceably delayed d e to the shortage of equipment operators and crushed rocl both of which were being used on higher priorfty 1 combat essential li of communications (LOC) in Northern I Corps. This situation was corrected in the later months of the deployment when some of the Equipment Ope ators were returned to NMCB SIXTY-TWO and crushed rock became available. 2. F om the beginning of the deployment until the last month, ready mix concrete proved to be a major problem. Concrete schedules were seldom met and considerable lost time was experienced on projects waiting for concrete. Du~ing the last month of the deployment the concrete situation improved with the ri al of new transit mix trucks at the Camp Haskins (North) batch plant. long lead time for non standard construction materials was a pro rou hou the de~loyment and was correctable pnly by advance ordering of non-standard materials at the time a project was approved for con ruction or by employing an expeditor out of country. 1-1

The activities of the Public Affairs Office were supervised by the Chaplain in his capacity as the Public Affairs Officer. While deployed, all Battalion newspapers were printed in Okinawa. The deployment cruise book was completed during the deployment with the assistance of volunt eers from other Battalion departments and companies, in order to have it ready for distribution soon after return to homeport.
