ONE LOVE: JAMAICA 2013 Join Connexin Software s CEO and Medical Director on a week-long journey providing pediatric medical care on a beautiful island you only think you know.

Our involvement with Issa Trust began three years ago. Sue and I always talked about doing charitable work when our lives settled down and our own children were grown. We learned about Issa Trust while vacationing at Couples Negril. Then completely by coincidence we ran into Diane Pollard, CEO of Issa Trust, in the lobby of Couples Sans Souci on our next vacation. It was a random, life-changing twist of fate for all of us. - Greg Anderson, CEO, Connexin Software OP employees contributed about $1500 that Connexin matched. We purchased and donated two laptops, networking equipment, secure cases, portable scanner, printer, and UPS. Greg is busy scribing in OP while Sue has an encounter with a typical Jamaican family. Everyone s all smiles after a visit to the Oracabessa Clinic. Greg with a curious patient. Makeshift clinics were set up throughout various locations in Jamaica and served the needs of almost 900 children in five days.

Jamaica is a beautiful place with welcoming people and a relaxed island lifestyle that we could all take a lesson from in our overscheduled lives. No problem, mon is not a cliché, it s a mindset that perfectly defines the people and their culture. Once you go beyond being just a tourist, you gain a deep appreciation for making the most of what you have and enjoying life to its fullest. I appreciate returning and working with the same dedicated people, and developing a body of knowledge about these children that leads to more appropriate care and population health statistics that have never before existed for this group. - Greg Anderson, CEO, Connexin Software The needs of the children are great, and without Issa Trust, some of these children may not get the care they so urgently need. This child is receiving a nebulizer treatment. Traveling in style to get a check up at the San Souci Clinic. Greg, mulling through the data after a busy day at the clinics. In Jamaica, all students wear uniforms to school. Folding chairs work just as well as exam tables at the Oracabessa Clinic.

Well visits are critical to healthy outcomes. Often families sat on church pews while the physicians sat alongside them, or on rickety folding chairs. I was not used to goats and chickens outside the door I don t have those at my office in Doylestown! - Dr. Sue We saw children with their teachers, their grandparents, or the lady down the road. They are also incredibly appreciative. They often have very little, but value what they have. - Dr. Sue Although I have been peripherally involved in the Issa Trust Mission for a few years, this was my first experience providing medical care. I was initially quite nervous and unsure regarding expectations of my fund of knowledge or available resources. It turns out that providing medical care for children in an ambulatory setting is pretty much the same no matter where you are. Establishing a connection with the family, listening thoughtfully and applying good clinical examination skills and providing support and guidance are the cornerstones of good care in Doylestown or Ocho Rios. - Sue Kressly, MD, Medical Director, Connexin Software Working in a makeshift medical clinic reminded me of my training in North Philadelphia. Do what you can with whatever resources you have; don t focus on the physical surroundings but the personal connections. - Dr. Sue

What I love most about being involved in this project is that it reminds me of why I went into pediatrics. To have the opportunity to touch lives in a positive way without rules, regulations and external constraints. In truth, the volunteers get just as much back from the experience as we give. It grounds us, provokes self-reflection and adds meaning to our daily lives that can only happen when you reach out to someone else. And if one child came away with better health, better self-esteem, or just knowing that someone cares, then it s all worth it. - Sue Kressly, MD, Medical Director, Connexin Software Sue works with a colleague to make sure all the notes were entered correctly for quality metrics and future visits. Have medical supplies, will travel. It s even more fun when you get to help examine your little brother. A trip to the clinic is always more fun when you bring a friend.

We are extremely thankful to Greg and his Connexin team for designing and implementing a system to help our foundation capture data during our medical initiatives. Their ability to facilitate effective and efficient data collection will help the government of Jamaica s Ministry of Health make informed decisions for future policy making, evaluation, disease management and improving quality care delivery. Diane Pollard, President & CEO Issa Trust Foundation www.issatrustfoundation.com Issa Trust volunteers - September 2013 Children have the same needs no matter where you travel in the world. Love is universal. A one-hour training session was all volunteers needed to learn OP. Community health centers and churches opened their arms to the mission. A little TLC went a long, long way.

The Issa Trust Foundation was established in 2005 by Couples Resorts as a nonprofit organization. The mission of the Foundation is to provide a system of prevention, health promotion and education, community health improvement and other services to promote well-being and development for the people of Jamaica. Since 2005, The Foundation has conducted annual pediatric medical missions to Negril and Ocho Rios Jamaica, and treated thousands of children. Connexin Software has supported the Foundation since 2011 with electronic health records to document its important work. Access to health care is fundamental to our quality of life and, it is essential in the daily struggle for survival. The goal is not only to give free medical care to children, but also to mentor local health care providers, so that they can continue to practice in their home countries where their skills are most urgently needed.
