Attended the Bright Futures Steering Partners Retreat on October 11, 2017. Attended a dual enrollment planning meeting with representatives of the South Monterey County Unified School District to identify pathway courses for Greenfield and King City high school students. Participated in a focus group of local college and university leaders with State Senator Bill Monning to discuss postsecondary challenges and need for legislative support. Attended Congressman Panetta s forum on federal DACA updates and ASHC President Ponce s resolution reading in support of DACA students during DACA Advocacy Week (10/16-10/20). Hosted the Bright Futures Goal 6 (College Readiness) Advisory Group meeting at the Steinbeck Center on October 20, 2017. Presented Bridging the Gap Goals and Objectives to the Monterey County College Readiness Collaborative on October 25, 2017. SEOG Grant year to date total disbursed for 2017-2018: $98,600.00 Financial Aid staff provided financial aid presentations for the upcoming 2018-2019 FAFSA to the following high schools for graduating seniors and parents: King City High School on October 11, 2017 from 5pm-7pm. Greenfield High School on October 18, 2017 from 6pm-8pm Pacific Charter School on October 20, 2017 from 11:30-1pm We continue to assist students with completing their financial aid files for 2017-2018 and now for 2018-2019 (new FAFSA application opened up October 1st) SCHOLARSHIPS We disbursed $3,505.00 in Scholarship awards to 1 student for Fall 2017 the week of October 9-13, 2017. We disbursed $2,975.00 in Scholarship awards to 10 students for Fall 2017 the week of October 16-20, 2017. ADMISSIONS & RECORDS On Friday, October 13, the 6 members of the Admissions & Records staff attended the Region 5 & 6 A&R staff development workshop at Cuesta College. VETERANS The mobile Vet Center and medical doctors were on campus on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Student Success Antonio Alarcon, Dean Antonio Alarcon and Natalia Cordoba-Velasquez presented at the RP Group s Strengthening Student Success Conference on the development of the Academic Support System and student success outcomes resulting from usage of the Panther Learning Labs and the partnership with faculty and the Early Support Team. The Pathways Team has begun working with local high school partners to
orient students to the 7 Steps to Success for Hartnell College Transfer Workshops have been in progress and will continue through the UC application deadline Student Success workshops are ongoing through the start of spring Counselors have received training on the UC and CSU applications Counselors have been meeting with students for general counseling educational planning and have met with the following number of students: 664 General Counseling appointments attended 72 Alisal Campus appointments attended 38 King City Campus appointments attended 178 Veterans, STEM, and ECE Counseling appointments attended 103 Transfer Center Counseling appointments attended 29 Dreamer Counseling appointments attended 38 Athletics appointments attended Categorical Programs Paul Casey, Director EOPS and CalWORKs program sponsored several exciting activities in support of students. Below are some of the highlights. Workshop Wednesdays are a success and have been facilitated by EOPS counselors, Millicent Madrigal and Mitzi Alexander. This month s topic was Student Success. These mandatory workshops are to assist students who received a grade below a C in their courses. The workshops are an Early Alert to help students to get back on track and improve their grades. CalWORKs is proud to announce that Nathalie Suarez was accepted to the Cal State University of Monterey Bay. Nathalie s story was shared in a writeup in the Report to the Community. We are very proud of Nathalie. When she first was accepted into CARE and CalWORKs program, she was afraid of attending college and was not sure if this was the right thing to do. EOPS staff are planning several fall events. The first will be on October 11, 2017, EOPS Student Appreciation Day. We offered hot dogs, chips, and drinks to over 150 students as a way to show we appreciate their determination and efforts to be successful in college. This also provided an opportunity to remind students of upcoming activities and mandatory counseling appointments they must meet to stay in good standing to continue receiving EOPS services. EOPS staff are diligently processing names of EOPS students who are in good standing to be placed on the Priority Registration list. A student in good standing is those who have maintained GPA 2.0, meet with a counselor the required three contact and have submitted their Program
Report. As of October 19, 2017, we have submitted over 266 student names to receive priority registration for Spring 2018. Department of Supportive Programs & Services (DSP&S) Amy Lehman, Director The DSPS has served over 320 students this MIS reporting term. Amy Lehman and Alicia Edelen gave a Mental Health First Aid training on Friday, October 6, 2017. The DSPS Director attended the Student Athlete Retention and Success Workgroup to discuss DSPS services on Friday, October 6, 2017. The DSPS Director presented Mental Health Basics workshop to the Academic Affairs Division on Friday, October 13, 2017. The DSPS Director presented at CORE team meeting on Monday, October 16, 2017 to discuss DSPS student privacy in Colleague. DSPS full-time counselor and Adaptive PE full-time counselors attended the CAPED conference in Huntington Beach October 18-21, 2017. The DSPS hosted a Movies for Mental Health event on Tuesday, October 24 2017. This was offered through an organization called Art With Impact. The event featured short films, food, panelists and discussion. The DSPS Director assisted with Farm Day Tours on Thursday, October 26, 2017. Mental Health First Aid for faculty was offered on Friday, October 27, 2017. High School Equivalency Program Eric Becerra, Director I am proud to report that we have our first official graduates for 217-2018. Both graduates took their 5th and final exam on September 29, 2017 and received news of their passing score on Monday October 2nd. On Friday, October 6, 2017 our students went on a field trip to Hollister and San Juan Bautista. During this trip they learned about the San Andreas Fault and experienced San Juan Bautista s Living History Days. For many of our students, this is the first time they travel outside of Salinas to explore the rich history of the Salinas Valley. During summer 2017, HEP Director developed a template for a monthly dashboard that will allow us to monitor enrollment and completion rates. Having a snapshot of our progress on a monthly basis allows us to identify trends over time and informs decision making. As of the end of September, 57 prospective students have completed our assessment, 28 scored HEP Ready (49%). An additional 8 prospective students scored into our Intervention Group, just a few points below our cut-off score. These students will be invited to attend an in person study guide review session (intervention), and take our assessment for a second time.
On Wednesday, October 11, 2017 we recognized the 3 students who raised the most funds through our candy apple fundraiser. There was a tie for first place. Both sold 37 apples each, and will receive a refurbished Chromebook donated by Loaves Fishes and Computers, a local nonprofit. Our 2nd and 3rd prize winners will receive Hartnell College swag courtesy of the pathways team. Fundraising efforts go to support our end of year Graduate Recognition Ceremony. HEP Director attended a Region 16 Migrant Secondary Guidance Staff meeting on Monday, October 30, 2017. All Migrant Resource Counselors in Region 16 attend these meetings making it an ideal venue to share programmatic updates, as well as learn about new initiatives at the regional level. HEP Director participated in a virtual lecture facilitated by Dr. J. Luke Wood, Director of the Doctoral in Educational Leadership program at San Diego State University, entitled Black Minds Matter. The lecture series focused on is a public course designed to raise the national consciousness about issues facing black boys and men in education. Office of Student Life Augustine Nevarez, Director Student clubs and staff provided support at the Salinas Airshow on September 30 and October 1. Eight clubs and over 50 student volunteers engaged young airshow goers in the STEM pavilion. An event titled Fostering Cultural Diversity was held on Monday, October 9. Facilitated by Susan Shillinglaw, Alfredo Avila and Joey Martinez, this hands-on workshop guided participants through an interactive exploration of cultural discovery. Over 50 students were engaged by reading excerpts from The Big Read book titled Citizen, then participated in an interpretive dialogue, and finalized with the interpreting their experience through art. ASHC Officers attended the CCCSAA Student Leadership Conference on October 13-15, 2017 in San Jose. The conference title was LEARN, ACT, LEAD and was chaired by Augustine Nevarez, Director of Student Life and brought over 500 students leaders from more than 50 California community colleges. Students participated in leadership skill building workshops, engaged in networking, and enjoyed downtime with Associated Student leaders from colleges across the state. Conference participants enjoyed keynote addresses by San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, CA Assemblymember Evan Low, Sharyn Siebert (American Association of University Women, Monterey Chapter), motivational speaker Frank Kitchen, and a special keynote address by our very own Esmeralda Montenegro-Owen. ASHC hosted the annual Panther Pink Day in support of Breast Cancer
Awareness. Hartnell s community was asked to wear pink and donate towards this most worthy cause. ASHC and ICC partnered up to bring a Family Pumpkin Patch to Hartnell's main campus on Thursday October 26, 2017, 6:00-8:00 pm. With the help of many club members, Hartnell Students and their children were invited to pick out a pumpkin for free. Over a hundred pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, along with Halloween candy and prizes were given out to the community. On Tuesday October 31, 2017 ASHC helped celebrate Halloween by hosting a costume contest for students and staff of Hartnell College. Winners were awarded a $25 gift card to the Hartnell College bookstore. Light refreshments and sweets were served in the Student Center, 12:00-2:00 pm. Special Programs Bronwyn Moreno, Director Mi CASA The Mi CASA conducted a series of informational presentation at feeder high schools and to the local community in order to increase knowledge and awareness of Mi CASA services. Dreamer Counselor Rosa Vidales led an immigration informational training for parents in Soledad, CA in collaboration with Asamblea de Poder Popular on Sunday, October 7. Special Programs Counselor Yuliana Vazquez conducted an outreach presentation to the Gonzales Migrant Parent Organization on Wednesday, October 11. The focus of the presentation was on Mi CASA services and the seven steps to success. Parents also had an opportunity to ask questions about financial aid and adult education course offerings. On Friday, October 13, Special Programs Counselor Rosa Vidales participated in the Alisal High School College fair to recruit Dreamer students to enroll at Hartnell and encourage them to complete the California Dream Act Application. Mi CASA Counselor Yuliana Vazquez represented the Office of Special Programs at a job fair/recruitment event at the Monterey County Jail on Thursday, October 19 in order to share program opportunities with inmates. On Wednesday, October 18, Mi CASA co-hosted a special presentation by Congressman Jimmy Panetta in conjunction with DACA Advocacy Week. The purpose of the event was to provide Hartnell College and the greater community with an update on potential federal legislation impacting Dreamers. In addition, local immigration attorney Magnolia Zarraga provided important practical information for DACA recipients facing termination of DACA permits. Mi CASA Counselor Rosa Vidales, in collaboration with the Transfer and
Career Center, conducted a Dreamer Transfer Workshop on the King CIty campus to support students who are applying for CSU and UC s for the fall 2018 semester. Ten Dreamer students completed their applications for transfer to a four year university. Director Bronwyn Moreno completed a $25,000 proposal to the Packard Foundation to provide scholarships for students who will lose employment authorization when their DACA expires. The funds will support a pilot initiative to create an internship program which will allow undocumented students to obtain professional training and high quality employment related experiences. MILE/WELI On Saturday, October 6, 2017 the Office of Special Programs organized and hosted the first quarterly workshop and mentor meeting for both the WELI and MILE Programs. 25 WELI Scholars received a training from CSUMB Career Center Coordinator Rhonda Mercadal. Students were taught about resume development, personal branding, and professional dress and communication. The MILE Scholars participated in a workshop led by City of Gonzales City Manager Rene Mendez and Director of Engineering Services for Harris and Co., Frank Lopez. The men learned the importance of goal setting, and developed a plan for establishing a successful relationship with their mentors. The morning workshops were followed by mentor introductions. Each scholar was matched with a community leader based upon career interest. The scholars and mentors ate lunch together and discussed how the mentors can support the scholars in developing their goals. The Fourth Annual Women s Education & Leadership Institute Forum took place on October 26, 2017 at Tehama Golf Club. Each year, the forum brings together business and community leaders to raise over $30,000 to support the WELI Program. On Friday, October 27, 2017 a group of 15 MILE students participated in an intimate lunch and conversation with Dr. Willard Lewallen, Superintendent/President of Hartnell College. Dr. Lewallen shared his personal story with the students as well as words of encouragement and advice for achieving success. Other Special Programs led the convening of the Student Athlete Support and Retention Workgroup on Friday, October 5, 2017. Faculty, staff, and administrators met to review progress to date and receive a presentation from DSPS Director, Amy Lehman regarding accommodations for injured student athletes. In addition, the group discussed the process for providing accurate information to out of state students regarding cost of attendance.
TRiO Program Manuel Bersamin, Director The TRIO Director continues to assist TRIO students with California State University/University of California applications and Educational Opportunity Program applications The TRIO Director met with Chris Moss to complete the Standard IV A5 section of the Institutional Self-Study Report. The TRIO Director attended the meeting on CALFRESH and the possibility of a food pantry on October 12, 2017. The TRIO Director provided teambuilding for Gemma Cruz Soledad High School Dual Enrollment class fieldtrip to Hartnell College on October 12, 2017. The TRIO Director met with Dr. Lewallen about assisting the four community colleges, Mendocino College, Napa Valley College, Santa Rosa Junior College and Solano Community College that were affected by the fires. The TRIO staff continues to assist students to complete the FAFSA forms.
