Elevate Summer Camp 2018 - Parent Manual - JULY 18-23, 2018 (MS) JULY 23-28, 2018 (HS)

Parents, For many of you, this is old news. Your son or daughter has been to camp several times, and you ve already penciled in that getaway for you and/or your spouse (I ll let you interpret that slash however you want). For others, particularly new families to the Summit and parents of 5th grade students, the thought of sending your son or daughter eight hours away is just about the scariest thought imaginable. We understand. And that s why we re here. We ve done this for several years now, and we think we re getting better each year. We hope that this guide will help answer your questions. And if it doesn t? Let us know, and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Student Staff Jason Gaston, Family Ministries Pastor Jeremy Berger, Student Pastor Jenny Berger, Family Ministries Admin Antwon Burgess, Alamance County Student Director Josh Joyner, Apex Student Pastor Philip Black, Blue Ridge Student Director Dustin Wells, Brier Creek Student Pastor Cherie Scholes, Brier Creek Associate Student Director Griff Crews, Chapel Hill Student Director Jake Borem, Downtown Durham Student Director Caleb Martin, North Durham Student Director William Calhoun, North Raleigh Student Pastor Adam Cox, Student Ministry Associate Christina Paparella, Student Ministry Associate Elise Drennan, Student Ministry Associate

Elevate Summer Camp FAQs When is camp? Middle school: July 18-23 (Wednesday-Monday) High school: July 23-28 (Monday-Saturday) What constitutes MS and HS? Middle school camp is for rising 6-8th grade students. High school camp is for rising 9-12th grade students. Graduating seniors are welcome to attend as a MS leader. Where is camp? Camp will be at the Ocoee Ridge Camp in Ocoee, Tennessee (about an eight-hour drive from Raleigh). You can check out their website below for more information. ocoeeridgecamp.com What is the cost of camp? The cost of camp is $399. This covers meals (as we travel and at camp), lodging for five nights, transportation to/from camp, activities (including whitewater rafting), T-shirts, activity supplies, and administrative costs.

Are there scholarships/discounts available? We offer two types of discounts. The first is our early bird registration from Feb. 14-25. Anyone who registers and pays in full this week will be discounted $40. After early bird registration, you will need to speak with your student director concerning scholarships. Scholarships are based on criteria such as financial needs and family size and are limited to the amount of scholarship moneys available. How do you travel to and from camp? We travel in charter buses. Each bus holds 55 people. Do you stop along the way? We stop for lunch both ways. Lunch is provided and included in the cost of camp. What does the chaperone/leader situation look like? Our goal is to provide one chaperone for every six students. Most of our chaperones are your students weekend small group leaders, but we also enjoy having parents and other adults there as well. If you are interested, we would love to talk more about it with you. Chaperones are with students throughout the day during worship, meals, small group time, activities, and lights out. And yes, every chaperone is background-checked and trained prior to camp. Is the cost of camp the same for leaders/adults? No. The cost for leaders is $175.

What do small groups look like? We try our best to place students in their normal weekend small groups (separated by gender, grade, and campus). There are instances where we may have to combine/split groups because of size. What about lodging? Students will stay in bunkhouses. Each room has seven bunk beds for a total of 14 occupants. Each room will have two leaders and 12 students (to follow our 1:6 ratio), meaning each room will contain two small groups. Each room has its own bathroom for the 14 occupants. And we hope it s a no-brainer that boys and girls will be separated. Ocoee Bunkhouse Floor Plan What about safety? All the activities are run by Ocoee Ridge Camp staff and Adventure Unlimited (whitewater rafting). Both of these organizations are in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations. Are middle school students whitewater rafting? No. Middle school students will be tubing instead of whitewater rafting. It will be an enjoyable experience for them. First aid: We bring two registered nurses with us to camp to assist with medication and any emergencies. Lights out: Lights out varies for MS and HS but is anywhere from 11-11:30 p.m.

Meals: Ocoee Ridge Camp provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers alternate choices (with advance notice) for those with dietary needs. We can work out what s best for your family after you register. Technology: Our desire is to be as distraction free as possible. Cell phones, ipads, and other electronic devices are not permitted. What if I need to contact my student at camp? In the event of emergencies, you will be able to contact your student s small group leader or our Summit on-call staff member. Worship: Evening messages will be given by members of our student ministry team. Worship will be led by worship leaders from all Summit campuses. Theme: The theme of camp is, Jesus is We want students walking away from camp with a greater knowledge of who Jesus is and what that means for their lives.
