January 2018 Newsletter Welcome to 2018! I hope that the new year finds everyone healthy and well rested. With their extended break, the students should be. I am certain that the music groups have hit the ground running now that they are finally back in class. Many of our students are going to Solo/Ensemble Contest at the end of January, followed by the groups that will be attending the OMEA contest at the end of February. Best of luck to all of the students competing! Please be sure to read through the newsletter for all of the important dates from each of our groups. This year all of the groups are planning trips and, in this newsletter, you will find the dates for these, as well as, for concert and summer events. We try to give as much notice as possible when we can! All of the groups have already had a very busy first half of the year including all of the concerts, extra performances and activities that they have participated in. If you happened to be downtown for the Holiday walk, you would have heard some of our students donating their time to provide music at the various venues during the afternoon. Events like that are organized by the students who enjoy performing and giving back to the community. While 2018 has just started many of our groups are already starting to plan for the 2018 2019 school year. Please watch your emails for the many volunteer opportunities from your various VP s. There are all kinds of opportunities with varying levels of time commitments. Thanks again and looking forward to a great Spring! Choir News Hope everyone had a great (extended) holiday season, Welcome to 2018! The first thing on the agenda for this year is the first annual Vocal Impact Invitational. We have 4 choirs attending in addition to our own Vocal Impact. They are from Nordonia, Aurora, Brecksville and Hudson Middle School. The event is on Friday January 19 th at 7pm in the Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door. It is really fun to see other schools show choirs and how different they are. It s like a band show for the Choir kids. Vocal Impact is busy because on February 3 rd they are also attending the Walsh Jesuit Great Lakes Show Choir Competition (Time TBD). Our regular Choirs are preparing for their February 28 th Mid-winter Choir concert with the 8 th graders. It is an excellent reason to leave the house in winter. For those students signed up, the Solo and Ensemble Contest is on January 27, 2018 at Firestone High School in Akron. You should be hearing about times shortly. Thanks to everyone who have signed up for concessions so far and keep an eye out for our sign up genius for more opportunities in the Spring. Concert Reception Chair We have great parents who help serve at each concert, but we need a parent who can take responsibility of this lovely tradition for the remaining concerts for this year and next. Please have your orchestra student try on their uniform TODAY and, if a different size is needed, contact Mr. Iriare or Mrs. House (330-653-9582) so that properly fitting pieces can be located in time for the February concert. OMEA ORCHESTRA CONTEST: Army of Volunteers Needed February 16 & 17 (Friday & Saturday) The HHS Orchestra program is honored, again, to host the regional large-group contests. We are re-selected as hosts, in part, because of our success in hosting during previous years. We are successful at hosting this annual event because of our great volunteers who make the whole process run smoothly. What it is: The Ohio Music Educators Association conducts the large group contests--similar to the Solo & Ensemble contests--for the benefit of students and teachers. More than 25 orchestras from the area will travel to HHS on those days to perform a 15-minute concert for a panel of judges and to sight read a musical selection for another judge. The groups are escorted from check-in to a "homeroom" where they drop off coats and instrument cases. From the homeroom, the orchestra is escorted to the warm-up room, then the auditorium for performance, finally ending up in the sight-reading room. They are escorted back to the homeroom and then await their final scores. When it is: Contest performances begin by 4:00 PM on Friday, February 16 with the last performance around 10:30 PM. Performances resume at 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 17, concluding with the last performance around 3:00 PM that day. Volunteer shifts may have very specific times assigned to them (e.g. 7:34-9:20) which is very intentional--the time of the shift is meticulously coordinated with the performance schedule and meal breaks. Orchestra performance schedules will be available the week prior to the contest. Who we need: All orchestra students are expected to volunteer for at least one shift as guides, head office runners, and stage/room helpers. Mr. Iriarte will coordinate the student volunteer sign-ups. All orchestra parents are encouraged to volunteer in as many ways as they are able. We need parents to serve as auditorium monitors, stage managers, practice room monitors, sight-reading room managers, and volunteer managers. We also rely on donations of food to stock our directors' and volunteers' hospitality rooms. Both of these opportunities will be posted on Sign-Up Genius pages which will go live near the end of January. Shifts and jobs vary in length and difficulty, so sign up early (and often). Volunteer details: Check-in 5 minutes before your shift starts in the HHS Main Office (contest headquarters). We will have a nametag ready for you. Wear comfortable shoes as many of the duties entail standing or walking. Spectator details: The auditorium performances are free and open to the public; no applause, photography, or recording is permitted. No cell phone use is permitted. No one may be admitted once the performance has started. This is not an appropriate event for younger audience members who may have difficulty sitting still or being quiet. These rules are enforced strictly and violations can cause the performing orchestra to be disqualified. Questions? Contact OMEA Event chair Sarah Norman, 216-990-9082 (cell phone) or Mr. Iriarte.
