Southern Adelaide Local Health Network Flinders Medical Centre REGISTERED NURSE RE-ENTRY PROGRAM INFORMATION SHEET Applications Open: Monday 22 April 2013 Applications Close: Friday 17 May 2013 11.55 pm Program Commencement: Monday 29 July 2013 If you have been registered with an Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board within the past 5-10 years, our programs can get you back into the profession and at no expense. You will be able to study from home, attend study days at Flinders Medical Centre or the Royal Adelaide Hospital and gain experience in a clinical unit close to your home. We offer part-time and full-time study, with all participants receiving a SA Health funded scholarship. The Re-Entry Program provides a foundation of contemporary knowledge and skills required for previously registered nurses to achieve a level of competence that will enable them to meet the requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA). Eligibility Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status and have been registered within the last 10 years as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. It is expected that successful participants are medically fit to undertake the program and are up to date with vaccinations. Commencement in the program is subject to a satisfactory Criminal History clearance. Program Fees This program is free. It is fully funded by SA Health. Scholarship A scholarship is available to each successful participant to help meet the program related expenses. Scholarships are funded by SA Health and will be paid on completion of specific stages of the program. The total amount per participant for the RN Re-Entry program is $7,000. Please note: The scholarship is classified as income and must be declared at the end of the financial year.

Aims To provide the foundation knowledge and skills required to develop previously Registered Nurses to a level of competence that will enable them to meet the requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA). To recognise the participant s previous nursing experience and build on that by providing an introduction to contemporary requirements of the Registered Nurse as a reflective, critical thinker who incorporates evidence and an outcome based approach to patient focused nursing practice. Outcomes On completion of the program, the participants will be able to: Demonstrate acquisition of the ANMC National competency standards for the Registered Nurse. Perform nursing care and interventions to achieve quality outcomes for patients in acute care. Apply knowledge of actions, side-effects and nursing implications of medications commonly used in acute care. Competently use and maintain equipment used in the care of acute care patients. Provide psychosocial support, counselling and education for patients and their families or Significant others to promote health and allay anxiety. Initiate actions to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff. Evaluate and reflect on current clinical practice in accordance with the available evidence utilising critical thinking skills. Apply ethical and legal principles to contemporary nursing practice. Theoretical Component Covers the ANMC Competency Standards under the following domains: Professional and Ethical Practice Domain Legislation governing nursing practice. Nursing Standards and Codes of Practice. Culturally sensitive patient focused care. Legal and ethical decision making. Critical Thinking and Analysis Domain: Reflective practice. Utilisation of resources. Analysis and utilisation of evidence-based practice and research. Self-assessment and peer review. Management of Care Domain: Nursing assessment. Nursing documentation. Nursing care of patients with acute medical or surgical disorders. Nursing care of patients suffering pain or in need of palliation. Pharmacology and medication administration. Patient education. Patient care technology. Management of emergencies.

Enabling Domain: Environmental safety. Clinical Governance. Risk management approach to nursing care. Interpersonal skills. Coordination and delegation. Dealing with difficult behaviour. Patient advocacy. Program Structure The program is delivered over 19 weeks, based on three days per week. An outline of the structure is provided in the table below. Theoretical content has been developed in flexible delivery mode to allow you to study at home, access to a computer is essential. There are eight compulsory study days where participants are required to attend FMC. These are delivered in the first five weeks of the program. Clinical placement is for 40 shifts. Please note: The following program is only a draft version. Some areas of this program are currently being reviewed. Participants will be required to attend Flinders Medical Centre workshops on eight days (mandatory study days). Confirmation of actual dates not identified as confirmed are subject to change and successful applicants will be notified of confirmed dates at time of offer. Clinical Support An experienced clinician will provide clinical supervision, teaching and assessment of participants for the duration of the clinical placement. Assessment To successfully complete the program, participants will be required to: Attend required workshops and clinical observation days. Complete specified learning activities. Actively participate in all group learning activities. Successfully complete the clinical component, including clinical competencies relevant to acute care nursing. A certificate and transcript will be issued on successful completion of the program. Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Each participant will be indemnified and insured under the SA Health insurance arrangements for Professional Indemnity and Public Liability for the duration of the program. Personal Accident Cover Personal Accident cover is not provided. Each participant may wish to consider having their own personal accident cover for protection in the event of injury. Temporary accident cover can be arranged for a fee direct with an Insurance Company or Broker. Uniform Neat casual clothes can be worn to classroom sessions. When undertaking observational visits or during clinical placement participants may wear a white shirt and navy pants/skirt as an appropriate uniform. A Flinders Medical Centre identification badge will be issued to each participant to wear for the duration of the program. A $10 refundable deposit will be required for those participants undertaking placement at Flinders Medical Centre to cover the cost of a security access card which is required during clinical placement. Car Parking Flinders Medical Centre has on site car parking available in the Wilson multistorey car park. A maximum daily rate will be available to the participants for the duration of the program. There is very limited free street parking available. Noarlunga and Repatriation General Hospitals have onsite parking for which a fee is charged Meal Breaks Food and drinks are available for students to purchase from vending machines, kiosk or cafeteria on hospital premises. Students may choose to bring their own food and drink. A fridge and microwave are available in the Staff Development Department tea room Employment Opportunities Students will be offered guidance in securing appropriate employment on completion of the program.
