Clara became a teacher. She was good at it. She started the first public school in New Jersey. How? She taught for free! Nurse Clara The Civil War started in 1861. There were no trained nurses in America! Clara wanted to help. Clara was called the Angel of the Battlefield. Many men were shot. Some got sick. Clara took care of them all. She worked very hard. Sometimes she got hurt. Her clothes were hit by bullets twice. President Lincoln gave her a medal. Later, Clara went to Europe. She heard about the Geneva Convention. It was a treaty. It said that hospitals could fly a Red Cross flag. No one would shoot at it. Red Cross workers would help soldiers from all sides. Clara liked this. She wanted the United States to sign the treaty.
