These scholarships are awarded to students who plan to attend a two (2) or four (4) year college or university on a full-time basis in the year of graduation. Scholarships are awarded on academic achievement, community involvement and the applicant s ability to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas in writing. All candidates must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 calculated through the end of the second quarter in the year they apply. Dear Scholarship Applicants: The Ivy and Pearls of Southern Maryland Community Charities in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Zeta Omega Chapter will be awarding academic scholarships, up to $1,000, to graduating high school seniors who reside in the Charles County or St. Mary s County. Each 2018 graduating senior must plan to attend a two (2) or four (4) year college or university on a full-time basis in the year of graduation. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement, community involvement, and the applicant s ability to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas in writing. All candidates must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, calculated through the end of the second quarter. If selected, the candidate will be required to attend an in-person interview during the week of April 16 20, 2018. The following must be returned to Ivy and Pearls of Southern Maryland Community Charities, in one packet: 1. A completed computer generated or typed application. The applicant must sign the application. 2. Two (2) current letters of recommendation. These letters must be: (a) a community service letter of recommendation from a community service representative or coordinator; and (b) a scholastic recommendation letter from a school official/faculty member. Each letter must be on official school letterhead, computer generated or typed and signed by an authorized representative. ** Please Note: Community service activities cannot be job related or those that are done in the interest of family, self, or for which the applicant received a grade at their respective school. All community service hours must have been completed within the last 24 months. Some examples of acceptable community service activities are: Feeding the homeless Participating in Christmas in April Registering voters Volunteering in local hospitals Tutoring/mentoring Volunteering with community based public service organizations (e.g., Red Cross and March of Dimes) 3. 4. Verification of acceptance and confirmation for admission into a two (2) or four (4) year college or university on a full-time basis in the year of graduation. 5. A minimum 2 ½ by 3 ½ wallet size school photograph (school ID photos and passport photos will not be accepted). 6. A 300-word maximum essay on the following topic: Imagine you are the President of the United States of America. Explain how your leadership will impact your local community, the nation, and the world at large. Be specific and provide supporting details. The essay must be computer generated or typed, double spaced, single side, on 8 ½ x 11 paper. The applicant s name and address MUST appear in the upper right hand corner of the first page. The applicant is required to include a computer generated word count with the essay. All applications and supporting documentation must be placed in a 9 x 12 manila envelope. Student applications will be reviewed for completeness and ranking based on the cumulative GPA. After the initial review, selected applicants will be notified via email, and required to attend an in-person interview. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
