CHEMISTRY NEWS CHEM 13 University of Waterloo Contest Results: Over 2100 students took part in the grade 12 CHEM 13 international contest hosted by the University of Waterloo. Congratulations go to Xuanyu (Shawn) Wang who placed within the 96 th percentile in Canada. He was tithing the top 100 contestants in the world. Raghav Srinivasan was 118 th in Canada and was in the 94 th percentile followed closely by Farbod Khorrami who ranked 138 th in Canada in the 93 rd percentile. All three has been awarded the prized elemental tile and certificates from the University of Waterloo. AY Jackson was also awarded a plaque for having students place in the top 5% internationally. Congratulations also to Jiahui (Jenny) Huang, Jonathan Chung, Tong Li Han and Ziyu (Knight) He who ranked in the top twenty percent of the participants. They were awarded a certificate from the University of Waterloo.

Grade 11 Avogadro s Waterloo Contest Results: Over 4200 students took part in the grade 11 Avogadro s international contest hosted by the University of Waterloo. Congratulations to Mingyang Li for placing in the 96 TH percentile. He was 125 th place in Canada. He has been awarded a plaque and certificate from University of Waterloo. AY Jackson was also awarded a plaque for having students place in the top 5% internationally. Manqiu Wu scored in the 95 th percentile and Qijia (Annie) Gao placed in the 95 th percentile. Congratulations also go to Joseph Chan, Lefu Fang, Eric Ji and Andrew Hua for placing within the top 20% across Canada. They have also been awarded certificates from the University of Waterloo.

University of Toronto Ask a Laureate Event: On May 12, 2017 the grade 12 Chemistry students attended the Laureate Events at the University of Toronto The Laureates are award winning chemists who are helping to transform our world with their discoveries and innovations. They explained their leading edge work which was followed by a Q & A period. After the lecture series 7 of our AY Jackson students were recognized with The CHEMISTRY SCHOLAR AWARD consisting of a certificate, prize money and a celebration luncheon with a prominent chemist or Nobel Laureate. Here the winners had the opportunity to engage in conversation with the speakers over lunch.

Congratulations to the following students: Lefu Fang, Natali Wong and Qijia (Annie) Gao in Third Place Alisa Lin, Fuqin Chen, Farbod Khorrami and Jocelyn Tan received Honorable Mention. University of Waterloo Tile Competition: Congratulations to Haohan Zhang for making to the final four elemental tile competition. Here is her tile and description: After researching about Moscow, I became so engrossed, I decided to do the superheavy synthetic element, Moscovium. Moscovium, originally Ununpentium, was created in 2003 by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research through a team of Russian and American scientists in Dubna, Russia. The name Moscovium is derived from the capital of Russia. Currently little information is known about the new element, however it is categorised as a metal, and obtains the capability to decay rapidly into other elements. Featured in the tile is Moscow s renowned building, St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow's Red Square, along with the element s Bohr Diagram on top of a radioactive symbol, to illustrate its radioactivity.

BIOLOGY NEWS University of Toronto National Biology Competition: The 23 rd annual University of Toronto National Biology Competition was held on Thursday April 27, 2017. Over 4567 students took part in this international contest. Congratulations to Jenny Chan for placing in the 99.1 percentile. Jenny was awarded as National Biology Scholar. Lucy Chen placed in the 91.7 percentile followed by Mike Ge in the 90.6 percentile. Cindy Hou and Melinda Jing placed within the top twenty percent of all contestants. AY Jackson ranked in the top 50 Canadian schools. Toronto Science Fair: On March 23 rd and 24 th, several AY Jackson students competed in the Toronto Science Fair. Evan Cross won a Silver Medal for his project on What s Brewing with Global Warming?

Zuoyi (Alan) Zhou and Ariya Askari won a Gold Medal for their project on The Effects of Sunlight on Bacterial Growth in Water Bottles. Both of these students received Canada Wide Awards Aura Comaniciu and Amy Wang won a Silver Medal for their project on MelaNOma - NO Sunburns NO Problems.

CHEMISTRY/BIOLOGY CELEBRATIONS JUNE 15, 2017 Over 60 of our biology and chemistry students were honoured on Thursday June 15, 2017. These students were nominated by their teachers for participation and excellence in several different areas including the National competitions, Science fairs, Bio Club, Chem Club and Science Olympics. Congratulations to all of our students for their exemplary involvement in the Sciences.
