The Brown Deer Golf Course has long attracted national attention and has routinely appeared in the media lists of the top 10 public courses in the country. It has played host to the USGA National Public Links Championship three times and has been home of the Greater Milwaukee Open since 1994). The Brown Deer Golf Club opened for play in July of 1929 and was a big hit with golfers from the start. Brown Deer was designed by long-time Park Superintendent George Hansen, who designed five of Milwaukee County s 16 courses. Brown Deer offers golfers 6,763 yards of challenging play. It offers long par fours (five over 400 yards), requiring strong drives that must avoid abundant stands of large trees. The course crosses streams at eight locations, with ponds adjoining three of the holes. The Brown Deer course has benefited from major improvements over the years. Since 1985, nearly $3 million in renovations have been made to prepare it for the GMO. In the future, additional improvements are planned for the course and clubhouse. A veteran squad in 1999-2000, Marquette remains an established group with a core of veterans to the college golf scene. Despite losing players like Tim Jacobs and Marc Fisher, a cornerstone group of three seniors Mike English, Edvins Erkmanis and Mark Wentz remains. Last season, Marquette men s golf proved that it was a force in college golf when it won the Billiken Invitational and had three combined first- or second-place finishes. Individuals performed well at varying times with five golfers earning top-10 finishes at some point during the year. With that much experience returning, expectations are high for the Marquette golf team. Despite struggling at the end of the season, Marquette has the tools to be a strong team this season. The three seniors provide the basis of the squad for. Wentz, a career 76.3 scorer, led the team in the fall of 2000 with a 73.3 scoring average Erkmanis has improved this season by over a stroke. A 77.2 per round career shooter, he has bettered his total to 76.1. English has shown that he has improved most of all by improving his average by three strokes. The career 78.5 shooter is tallying 75.5 strokes per round this season. Again, Marquette is showing depth as it did a year ago. Five different golfers have broken par, with a total of eight sub par rounds. Four golfers have even shot below 70. Junior Brad White has shown growth from a year ago. He has recorded the Golden Eagles best finish in two of four tournaments in the fall. He holds a respectable 75.9 average through four events of the season. Sophomore Matt Hilton is seeing more time than his one event a year ago. Hilton has been a part of all four Marquette tournaments and is second on the team in scoring at 75.0. Freshman Ryan Weber has also found his way in college golf. He is one of four golfers to play in all four tournaments in the fall. His 77.8 average is solid for a first semester of collegiate action. Riding the wave of success from 1999-2000, the Marquette men s golf team is sure to be thrilling once again in. Senior Mark Wentz Marquette Golf 1

Robert A. Wild, S.J. President Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., was named Marquette University's 22nd president on Jan. 22, 1996. He officially took office on June 17. Father Wild succeeds Albert J. DiUlio, S.J. In Father Wild, university Board of Trustees Chairman Edward Brennan said, we are blessed to have another Jesuit as president who is an academic and spiritual leader, someone who knows Marquette and is deeply committed to the university. Since 1992, Father Wild had been president of the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, a graduate professional school which trains both clergy and laity for leadership roles in the Catholic Church. From 1985 to 1991, he served as provincial superior of the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, directing activities of Jesuits in northern Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Father Wild taught theology at Marquette from 1975 to 1983 and has been a Bill Cords Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports Bill Cords enters his 15th year at Marquette University. The native of Butte, Mont., enjoyed a seven-year high school teaching and coaching career in Montana before leaving in 1971 for Washington State University. During his 11 years at WSU he served as head freshman football coach, assistant varsity football coach, director of intramurals, academic advisor, assistant athletics director and associate athletics director while earning a master's degree and completing doctoral work in education administration. In 1982 he became the athletics director at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). During that five-year tenure, a strong broad-based program was developed with a rapidly improving football program, development of a women's athletic conference, a very successful men's basketball program, and highlighted by the elimination of a $1 million deficit. In 1987 Cords accepted the position of director of athletics at Marquette. From that time Marquette moved from independent status to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) in 1988-89, to charter membership in the very successful and widely-respected Great Midwest Conference in 1990, to charter membership in the nationally prominent and prestigious Conference USA in July 1995. The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports is to strive for excellence in academics, athletics and leadership through service to others. Marquette student-athletes, teams and coaches across the broad spectrum of the program continue to achieve academic, athletic and professional prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. 1996-97 may well have been MU s best year. 230 student-athletes achieved an average GPA of 2.98. There were three GTE Academic All-Americans, four GTE Academic All-District Five honorees, four Conference USA Scholar-Athletes and two recipients of member of the university's Board of Trustees since 1990. In a sense, I feel like I'm coming home, Father Wild said. During my years in the classroom at Marquette, teaching both undergraduates and graduate students, and later as a trustee, I have really come to know and love Marquette and the people who make this an outstanding university. I share their belief in the distinctive nature of Jesuit, Catholic education, and its critical relevance to the world we live in today. Father Wild, 57, is a native of Chicago, Ill. He holds a doctoral degree in the study of religion from Harvard University, a master's in classical languages and a bachelor's degree in Latin, from Loyola University of Chicago, and a bachelor's degree in philosophy from West Baden College, West Baden, Ind. He has held teaching fellowships or visiting professorships at Harvard University, Loyola University of Chicago, and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Father Wild began his teaching career at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, where he taught Latin, Greek and speech and debate from 1964 to 1967. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1957. An avid follower of the women's basketball team, he frequently attends contests and traveled to Baton Rouge, La., to see the Golden Eagles play in the 1997 NCAA Tournament. Conference USA postgraduate academic scholarships. Three teams and five individuals appeared in NCAA Championships, with one student earning All-American status. There were five Conference USA team champions and seven runners-up. If there were a Conference USA Commissioner's Cup for Men's, Women's and All Sports, symbolic of the best athletic programs in the conference, Marquette would have finished second for Men's, first in Women's and first in All Sports. Attendance at men's basketball games continues to rank nationally. Women's basketball attendance continues to improve along with volleyball and men's and women's soccer. Marquette has hosted conference championships in men's and women's basketball, cross country, rifle, men's soccer, men's and women's tennis and outdoor track and field. Marquette hosted very successful NCAA Men's Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds in 1992 and 1996 and will serve as host again in 1999. In addition, Marquette will host the Conference USA Women s Basketball Championship in 2001, the C-USA Women s Soccer Championships in 2001, and the NCAA Women s Basketball Mideast Regional in 2002. "This steady and positive growth is a direct result of solid support from our administration, staff, supporters of the program and fans, combined with the hard work, commitment and dedication of our students, coaches and staff," stated Cords. Beginning July 1, 1993, he assumed responsibility as director of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports which combined the activities of intercollegiate athletics, intramurals, club sports and open recreation. This allowed the department to provide more services to the community, in particular the inauguration of the summertime National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) designed to benefit underprivileged youth in the Milwaukee area, while encouraging use of Marquette facilities such as the Valley Fields Complex, Rec Plex, Helfaer Tennis Stadium and Recreation Center and Marquette Gym for community activities and summer camps. Cords is a member of the Wisconsin Sports Authority Board, NCAA Division I- AAA Liaison Committee, NCAA Division I Strategic Planning cabinet and Conference USA's Television and Championships Committees. He and his wife, Gwen, reside in Brookfield. They have two grown children, Lisa and Aaron. 8 Marquette Golf Marquette Golf 9

Marquette University Marquette University is a Catholic, Jesuit university dedicated to serving God by serving our students and contributing to the advancement of knowledge. Our mission, therefore, is the search for truth, the discovery and sharing of knowledge, the fostering of personal and professional excellence, the promotion of a life of faith, and the development of leadership expressed in service to others. Excellence Our students, whether traditional or non-traditional, undergraduate, graduate or professional, come to Marquette University to share our commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all things as a lifelong endeavor. They come to join a community whose members - faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni and friends alike - believe that education must encompass the whole person: spiritual and moral as well as intellectual, the heart as well as the mind. And they come seeking the educational, professional and cultural advantages of a university located in the heart of the city. We, in turn, take seriously our responsibility to foster and support excellence in teaching and research, to keep a Marquette education accessible to a diverse population of students, and to offer personal attention and care to each member of the Marquette community. Faith As a Catholic university, we are committed to the unfettered pursuit of truth under the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith. Our Catholic identity is expressed in our choices of curricula, our sponsorship of programs and activities devoted to the cultivation of our religious character, our ecumenical outlook, and our support of Catholic beliefs and values. Precisely because Catholicism at its best seeks to be inclusive, we are open to all who share our mission and seek the truth about God and the world, and we are firmly committed to academic freedom as the necessary precondition for that search. We welcome and benefit enormously from the diversity of seekers within our ranks, even as we freely choose and celebrate our own Catholic identity. Leadership As a Jesuit university, Marquette embodies the intellectual and religious traditions of the Society of Jesus. Through an academically-rigorous, values-centered curriculum, our students receive a firm grounding in the liberal arts, preparation for work in a world of increasing complexity and diversity, and formation for life as ethical and informed leaders in their religious, cultural, professional and civic communities. They work with and learn from faculty who are true teacher-scholars, whose research not only advances the sum of human knowledge, but also informs their teaching, and whose commitment to students is fundamental to their intellectual and professional lives. Service Through both our academic and co-curricular programs, Marquette strives to develop men and women who will dedicate their lives to the service of others, actively entering into the struggle for a more just society. We expect all members of the Marquette community, whatever their faith tradition, to give concrete expression to their beliefs by giving of themselves in service to those in need. All this we pursue for the greater glory of God and the common benefit of the human community. 10 Marquette Men s Tennis Marquette Golf 11

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Milwaukee is The Genuine American City: steeped in tradition and history, alive with growth and development. From the clean, sparkling water of Lake Michigan, to the rich heritage of our ethnic neighborhoods, Milwaukee invites you to discover our unique and diverse community. With a population of 612,740, Milwaukee is the 17th-largest city in the country. The four-county metropolitan area has a population of 1.4 million. The metropolitan area is as diverse as it is large, rolling hills and farmland are within minutes of downtown. Situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, Native Americans had a special name for their land - "Milliocki" - or, gathering place by the waters. Today, Milwaukee continues to welcome all to "gather" and experience museums of art and history, a one-of-a-kind zoo, professional and collegiate sports, natural history, and the home of Harley-Davidson and Miller Brewing Company. Heralded as "The City of Festivals," Milwaukee hosts more than 15 annual fests, including the world's largest music festival, Summerfest, and over a dozen ethnic festivals all held along Milwaukee's spectacular lakefront. The Riverwalk, which meanders through the heart of downtown, features fine food, cultural venues and an array of distinctive sports bars and micro-brewery pubs. Just a few short blocks away is the Midwest Express Center - Milwaukee s new convention center which celebrated its grand opening in July, 1998. Other new developments include the Humphrey IMAX Dome Theater at the Milwaukee Public Museum, an expansion of the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Discovery World, The James Lovell Museum of Science, Economics and Technology, as well as a new stadium for the Milwaukee Brewers. The newly-opened Betty Brinn Children's Museum, geared toward children ages 1-10 and their families, is located at O'Donnell Park, also on Milwaukee's exquisite lakefront. The Historic Third Ward is quickly becoming the "off- Broadway" of Milwaukee's art scene. It is home to the new Broadway Theater Center, as well as another smaller, experimental theater. In addition, this restored warehouse district features a number of eclectic art galleries, the well-regarded Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, coffee houses, cafes and antique stores. Milwaukee is an energized, diverse community. Hardworking. Honest. Hospitable. Milwaukee: The Genuine American City.
