About this guide This Pre-Arrival Guide will provide you with information to help to prepare you for arrival at the Kaplan International College Lagos. Please read it in full, and keep it somewhere safe. Steps to arrival What you need to do next: STEP 1: secure your accommodation Accommodation is provided at the KIC Lagos Residence This is a fully furnished dormitorystyle residence in the Lekki Phase 1 area. In the pack provided, you will find an Accommodation Guide that includes an Accommodation Booking form and an Arrival form. Complete the Accommodation Booking form to tell us your housing choices. Return the Accommodation Booking Form to us as per the instructions on the form. You will receive confirmation of your reserved accommodation within one week of our receipt of your Accommodation Booking Form. STEP 2: tell us your arrival details Book your flight or arrange your transport to Lagos so you arrive in time for Induction Week (see important dates below). You must tell us when you plan on arriving in Lagos, at least 7 days before your arrival date. All students must complete and return the Arrival Form in the Accommodation Guide provided. If you are booked in the KIC Lagos Residence, also tell us how you will travel to the accommodation, and who (if anyone) will accompany you. STEP 3: prepare for arrival Be prepared: read this guide! Students who do not meet the required standard instead progress to an International Year One, Diploma or Degree Transfer Programme (equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree) at the relevant Kaplan pathway college on or near the University campus, leading to Year 2 of an undergraduate degree at the University upon completion. **Progression to International Year One. Global Foundation Programme in Lagos What to expect: your accommodation Students staying in the KIC Lagos Residence If you are staying in the College accommodation, you must arrive at the Residence during the weekend before the Global Foundation Programme Induction Week starts. Please refer to the Arrival form in the Accommodation Guide for arrival times. When you arrive, a member of staff will be there to meet and greet you and check you into your new room. In your room, you will find: Arrival Weekend The College s Arrival Weekend is Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, 2015 - For students staying in the KIC Lagos Residence Your Welcome Letter Details about city and weekend activities Accommodation rules Student welcome pack that contains bedding and other useful items (see the Accommodation Guide for the full list) Your student uniform: 5 customized College T-shirts students are expected to wear smart-casual skirts/pants and footwear with these. You will be able to access the internet (Wi-Fi and/or wired) in your accommodation, so you can contact your family to let them know you have arrived safely if you will be traveling alone. Students not staying in the KIC Lagos Residence If you will not be staying in the College accommodation, you must arrive at the College in Victoria Island just before 9am on Monday 28 September 2015. You will also need to come to the College on Friday 25 September at 11am to collect your uniform. Page 4

What to expect: the College Your classes will be held at Kaplan International College Lagos, a brand new state-of-the-art teaching facility in Victoria Island. Welcome and Induction Week Your first week at the College is called the Welcome and Induction Week. Induction involves welcoming and introducing students to the College, to our UK and Australia University partners, and to the city of Lagos. You will also have a useful chance to get to know other students, and to understand what is expected of you as a student and what you can expect from the College to help you be successful in your studies. It is very important that you arrive just before the beginning of Induction Week. Welcome and Induction Week The College s Welcome and Induction week is Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October, 2015 This week is designed around you, helping you to discover the answers to the questions you have, and providing you with crucial information about campus resources, programmes and services. Induction Week is a great opportunity to meet and make new friends and will help you in many areas of your new student life at the College, including: Registering with a doctor Academic support presentations Details of the Global Foundation Programme Your class schedule Tour of the College Social activities Books and tutoring Meeting Faculty Registration On your first day at the College, you must bring with you important documents to enable you to register on the Global Foundation Programme. Please see page 7 for a list of what to bring on your first day. On completing your registration, you will be handed a Welcome Week goody bag with a bottle of water, a cold drink, a few sweets and snacks, and some complimentary stationery to get you started! What to expect: the Global Foundation Programme What you will study Fall Term curriculum: Course Introductory Mathematics Introductory Science Academic Skills and Communication Academic Counselling and Tutorials Spring Term curriculum: There are two academic tracks available in the Spring Term, depending on your preferred degree: Humanities and Social Science pathway Science and Engineering pathway Course Humanities and Social Science Track Science and Engineering Track Economic Principles - Social Science - Advanced Mathematics - The Physical World - Globalisation and the Modern World Studying Abroad Academic Counselling and Tutorials Course text books and IT equipment The College will provide all course text books for you when you arrive so you do not need to buy the books before and bring them here. Most of the text books will be available for you to download electronically. You can still do general reading about your subjects and courses before you arrive or simply revise the mathematical, scientific or English skills that you will need on your courses.
