BEAVERTON ROTARY CLUB 2009-10 VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS The Beaverton Rotary Club will award vocational scholarships. Each is for one year and will be from one of two different major categories. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of the Beaverton School District. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2009. Scholarship recipients who show outstanding progress in the first year of their educational pursuits may apply for a scholarship for an additional year. Detailed information about each of the scholarship categories is below. Applicants are encouraged to obtain this application information in electronic format (www.beavertonrotary.org) so that they can complete the application electronically before printing it and submitting it. Vocational Scholarship Category #1: General Vocational. Scholarships of up to $2,000 will be awarded to selected students who intend to pursue a one or two-year program of study directly related to his/her vocational goal. This could include a student who is pursuing his/her vocational interests at a community college, a private proprietary school (e.g., beauty school, Western Culinary Institute, etc.), or some other recognized training program. Vocational Scholarship Category #2: Building Construction Industry. Associated General Contractors (AGC) and the Beaverton Rotary Club have partnered their resources to sponsor two $1000 scholarships to be awarded to selected students who are interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry. Category #2A: One scholarship is intended for a student who will be graduating this spring from a public or private high school within the Beaverton School District boundaries and who is interested in entering the Building Construction Technology (BCT) program at Portland Community College in the fall, 2009. Category #2B: The second scholarship is intended for a student who lives within the Beaverton School District boundaries, is currently in the first year of the PCC BCT program and who will use the scholarship to continue in the second year of the program in the fall, 2009.
General Information and Instructions, page 2 Applicants will be selected on the basis of clarity of vocational goals, academic progress, community and school service and their completion of the application and interview process. Each of the following items must be completed and returned to the address below no later than 5:00 p.m., May 1, 2009. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. 1. Application form, 2. Two personal references, at least one of which should be community service or employment based, 3. Copy of high school transcript (and college transcript, if appropriate), 4. Vocational essay. In addition, selected applicants must participate in a person interview with the Beaverton Rotary Club s Vocational Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee will notify the selected applicants regarding the schedule for these interviews immediately after the application deadline. Although the committee will make every effort to accommodate scheduling conflicts, applicants who are not available for the interview will not be considered for a scholarship. Successful applicants will be recognized at a regular meeting of the Beaverton Rotary Club, which meets at noon on Wednesdays. Scholarship awards will be sent to the school of the student s choice for distribution by the school s business office. The scholarship is awarded for the 2009-10 school years. It will be available for the student beginning with the fall term, 2009. Progress reports are expected to be submitted to the Beaverton Rotary Club at least once a term.
