Job Description Job Details Title: Section Head, Laboratory Version #: 1.0 Employer: Mercy Hospital Job Code: W29 FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt Pay Grade: W Basic Job Function and Responsibilities Perform all duties of a clinical laboratory scientist; functional supervision (plan, organize and delineate duties) of personnel in a section of the laboratory. Individual utilizes educational background and experience in technical methodology and theory to supervise the performance, interpretation and reporting results of test analysis. The Section Head acts as Technical Supervisor is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory Job Duties/Performance Expectations Title and Definition Assists with preparing operational and capital budget yearly; confers with salespersons to acquire data and prices for input to laboratory purchasing decisions. Assures department CAP surveys are performed appropriately and submitted on time. Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel and assures that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results. Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel to properly setup, calibrate, maintain, operate and
shutdown such instruments that are vital to their position. Identifies the training needs and assures that each individual performing tests receives training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed. Is responsible for providing day-to-day functional supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel Maintains and updates laboratory policies and procedure manuals and communicate policy to other laboratory personnel. Maintains functionality of departmental equipment and maintains inventories of reagents; assumes responsibilities for the maintenance of supplies, reagents and equipment. Oversees verification of the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system. Plans, organizes and performs daily clinical laboratory procedures, including hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, bacteriology, serology, and blood bank. Provides functional supervision to Medical Technologists in primary area of responsibility. Provides technical assistance to and coordinates the duties of, other laboratory personnel, such as MT, MLT, to maximize staffing for smooth, efficient operation of the area. Recommends disciplinary action and assists in performance evaluation; coordinates the orientation and training of new personnel. Reports results of studies and exams and notifies appropriate health care personnel of results Responsible for establishing a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed. Responsible for the enrollment and participation in an HHS approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered. Serves as a resource person to physicians and others relative to laboratory procedures. Other duties

Qualifications Education Degree Obtained Required Preferred Or Equivalent Experience A bachelor s degree in a chemical or biological science or medical technology Experience Related Experience In: Minimum Number of ears Required Preferred At least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within the specialty in which they are to act as technical supervisor is required 4 Certification(s), Licensure(s) & Registration(s) Certification, Licensure or Registration Required Preferred Time frame after hire (mths) Completion of a 12-month CLIA approved Medical Technology program is necessary, or an individual having experience and training that qualifies them to sit for and pass the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent certification proficiency exam. Registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent is required. Certification Maintenance is required for all individuals who were certified on or after January 1, 2004.
