What does a Stockport Homes Board Member do? Being a Board Member is an exciting role that gives you the opportunity to influence the direction of Stockport Homes and make sure that the company achieves its mission and aims. The most important qualities that a Board Member needs are enthusiasm and a commitment to improving the services Stockport Homes delivers to all its customers. Board Members are registered as company directors with Companies House, the government regulator for businesses in England and Wales. Being a company director involves a commitment to: act in the best of interests of the company; participate fully in the Board s work and accept responsibility for its decisions; and behave with integrity. The Board s work includes: setting Stockport Homes objectives; agreeing the budget; monitoring performance to make sure the company achieves its mission and aims; and supporting, questioning and challenging Stockport Homes paid staff. Some of this work is done is done in smaller meetings where the Board breaks into Sub-Groups. Every Board Member is expected to join at least one Sub-Group. To be an effective Board Member you will need to support the mission and aims of the company and be willing to spend time preparing for and attending meetings. Who can be a Stockport Homes Board Member? Most people who live in the east area will be able to stand for election to the Board. You will need to get five other tenants or leaseholders from the east area to support your nomination. There are some reasons that stop people from standing for election, so check these before completing your application form and contact us if you have any questions. You cannot stand for election to the Board if you: are in breach of your tenancy agreement. For example, if your rent account is in arrears, legal action is being taken for alleged anti-social behaviour or a Notice of Intention to Seek Possession has been issued for any reason; stop being a Stockport Homes tenant; work for Stockport Council in a managerial position; are bankrupt or have made a voluntary arrangement with creditors; have been disqualified from serving as a Board Member; have been a director of a company which has become insolvent; or have been convicted of a serious criminal offence in the past five years, in particular offences involving dishonesty. Some criminal convictions do not need to be disclosed under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. If you are in any doubt, you should seek legal advice or speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau.
