Learning Objectives: 1. 2. Basics of Open Access (OA) a. b. Brief Introduction Terminology Pursuing OA a. b. Which path? What are the rules? 3. Copyright Issues (- - as explained by a non-attorney) 4. Benefits of OA (Repository specific) 5. Dive-in
Terminology Self-archiving: The author deposits a free version of material in a repository in order to provide open access to the item. Embargoes: A time set by a journal publisher, where access to the archived version of the article is restricted until the embargo period expires. Gratis OA online access free of charge. Libre OA online access free of charge with various additional usage rights. Creative Commons License. A CC license is used when an author wants to allow others to share, use, and build upon work that they have created. Article processing charge. Fee charged by a journal to make a work available OA.
Terminology Pre-print: The version of an author s manuscript as originally submitted to a journal. Initial Draft Post-print: The version of an author s manuscript after referee comments and revisions. Final Draft; Author s Accepted Manuscript As -published: The version of an author s manuscript after final copyediting/ proofing and formatting. Version of Record
Publication Workflow with Terminology Pre-print Post-print As-published Submit to Journal Peer Review Edit Accepted by Journal Copyediting Formatting Typesetting Published Article Author Manuscript Final Published Version Version of Record
OA Tip To avoid confusion, keep traditional journal manuscripts and OA dissemination and publication materials separate. This greatly reduces the need for embargoes. It eliminates concerns over prior publication and publisher/journal selfarchiving policies. Over a nurse s career, there is more than enough material for both journals and repositories.
OA Routes Gold Road Green Road
Gold Road (Journals) Options Publish in an OA journal Or in a traditional subscription journal that has open access options (hybrid) Access Public access is to the final published article Access is immediate (upon publication) Fee OA fee is paid by the author on their behalf Example: Elsevier fees range from $500 - $5,000 US dollars depending upon the journal Use Authors typically sign an agreement that allows them to keep copyright to their work
Green Road (Repositories) Options University-based repository Profession-based repository Government-based repository Access Free access to a version of your article Fee None for the author Costs are generally covered by grants, membership dues, donations, etc. Use Copyright retained by the author Use and reuse decided upon by the author via an optional Creative Commons License
Journal Self-Archiving Policies How do I determine when to ask for an embargo? Only applies when you submit previously published articles to a repository, or You will be pursuing traditional publication based on work (manuscript) currently being submitted to a repository. What are the self-archiving OA policies of a journal? http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/index.php
I found/placed my author manuscript in PubMed Central. Can I deposit it in a repository? NIH is a PMC-participating funder; there is an agreement between the two entities. The Henderson Repository is not part of that agreement. Review the journal s OA author policy. Examine your author contract.
A few words on copyright and usage. Just because material is freely available on the internet, does not mean you have unlimited use and reuse rights. Someone still owns copyright to the material. Look for copyright and usage statements. Repositories and databases often have agreements with publishers, government funders, but they may not hold copyright.

Publication or Dissemination Rule of thumb Formal gatekeeping by peer-review and editorial staff = publication No/minimal gatekeeping = dissemination The Henderson Repository = hybrid publication and dissemination
