PUMP STATION MECHANIC I/II DEFINITION To perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the installation maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, chain drives, valves and related equipment; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Pump Mechanic I: This is the entry level class in the Pump Mechanic series. Positions in this class normally perform beginning level mechanical repair and maintenance work on a wide variety of wastewater and storm water lift station and equipment. Under this class, individuals employed at the entry level (Pump Mechanic I) may, based on the acquisition of higher skill levels through training and experience, become eligible for promotion to the Pump Mechanic II position. This promotion would be based on satisfactory demonstration of skills through examination or certification from an accepted organization, training institution, or school and demonstrated ability to perform high level maintenance and repairs on City pump stations. Particular skill areas of interest are installation and maintenance of telemetry systems, computerized pump control systems and pump preventative maintenance programs. Pump Mechanic II: This is the journey level class in the Pump Mechanic series. Positions assigned to this class are flexibly staffed and are expected to perform the most skilled repair and maintenance work and have a thorough knowledge of the operational characteristics, maintenance and repair methods and techniques and most typical system difficulties for the full range of equipment and operational systems in a lift station. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Pump Station Mechanics II may also be expected to assist in the oversite of less experienced personnel. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives supervision from the Public Works Supervisor or Pump Maintenance Mechanic III as directed. Technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level maintenance personnel. Assignments may require indirect supervision of less experienced maintenance personnel.

Page 2 EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate machines and tools in repairing defective parts of pumps, compressors, motors, incinerators, lift stations, and related mechanical equipment. Maintain accurate mechanical maintenance records. Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes. Install, repair, replace, and modify pumps, controllers, bearings, seals, hydraulic pipes, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment. Use a variety of power tools, hand tools, cutting and welding equipment and multi-meters. Clean, oil and paint pump station equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on the Pump Station equipment. Evaluate equipment performance and identify problem areas. Maintain stock inventory and adequate supply of replacement parts. Perform general maintenance duties in the Pump Stations, including buildings, grounds and equipment as required. Pump mechanics may be required to respond to emergency situations after normal working hours and be subject to serve on emergency stand-by alert and call out status on a rotational basis. Train and assist less experienced maintenance personnel. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Pump Station Mechanic I Standard practices, methods, tools and materials used in mechanical trades. Mechanical principles of pumps, controllers, motors chain drives and lift stations. General methods of electric, mechanical and plumbing repairs.

Page 3 Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work. Ability to: Perform skilled mechanical work independently. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Work from sketches, blueprints and diagrams. Use and care for bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of the mechanical trades. Develop and maintain accurate maintenance records. Use computers and handheld electronic devices in the course of work. Develop and maintain accurate maintenance records including Computerized Maintenance Management System information. Experience and Education Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year of experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, and related apparatus. Education: High School diploma or equivalent. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid California Driver s License. Possession of, or ability to maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver s License is required within 12 months of employment.

Page 4 Pump Station Mechanic II In addition to the qualifications for Pump Mechanic I: Knowledge of: Operating and repair characteristics of pumping stations mechanical systems. Particular safety hazards associated with wastewater pump operations and the discharge hazards and conditions that may result form mechanical malfunctions. Ability to: Perform journey level mechanical maintenance work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both minor and major repair work. Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs. Open and close W/O in the CMMS (commuter maintenance management system) system. Perform basic operators of SCADA software from a desktop or remotely from a laptop. Perform mechanical and minor electrical maintenance work including the trouble-shooting of equipment for both minor and major repair work. Ability to use computers and electronic communication devices in the course of work. Experience and Education Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Two years experience performing duties comparable to those of a Pump Mechanic I. Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Page 5 License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid California Driver s License. Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid Class A Commercial Driver s License is required within 12 months of employment. Possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade II (or higher) Certification or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of date of hire and retain the certification while employed in this position. ADA SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 90 pounds; exposure to extreme noise, outdoors, confining work space, electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals, dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards, and explosive materials; availability for standby and call back. Ability to wear a respirator and maintain a face seal while using a respirator.
