DAAD-Scholarships - only for German citizens or foreigners with equivalent legal status (acknowledged refugees, permanent residents, Niederlassungserlaubnis/Daueraufenthalt-EG) - only granted in case a return to Germany seems likely hard to obtain for those who came to Germany in order to do their doctorate, but not possible: a) if you were employed for five years in Germany and have paid old age pension insurance (true for all university employees). b) if you are regarded highly qualified c) marrying Germans
