HUDDLE OF THE DAY South Lake Hospital December 1, 2017 Reminders for Volunteer Assistance for a Safe and Smooth Discharge Each weekday morning (8:00a-12:30p) and afternoon (12:30-5:00p) several volunteers are on duty in the main concourse to welcome patients and visitors to the hospital, guide or assist them to their destination, and provide wheelchair assistance for patients discharged from Inpatient units, Same Day Surgery, Cath Lab and CDU in reaching the hospital entrances. ask for UHS. Give the patient s location so UHS can deliver the wheelchair without delay. Call for trained transport assistance via Vocera (x-8600) and ask for Radiology Transport Tech or DI Transport Tech. Volunteers may not lift or bear the weight of patients not capable of transitioning safely from the wheelchair into the vehicle. Often we receive many requests for discharges at or near the same time, and volunteers are not able to stand by in the discharging unit while patients get dressed, have IV lines removed, await prescription delivery or finish a meal. For a safe and smooth experience for your discharged patients during these times, please remember the following: 1. Volunteers may not transport Bariatric patients. For discharged patients who exceed the capacity in width (max 24 ) or weight (max 350-450 pounds) of standard wheelchairs in service at the hospital: Make both contacts at same time to avoid delays and support patient dignity in the discharge process.
