11 GENERAL ORDERS TO THE SENTRY 1. Take charge of this post and all government property in view. 2. Walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. 3. Report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce. 4. Repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guard house or the quarter deck than my own. 5. Quit my post only when properly relieved. 6. Receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the Commanding Officer, Command Duty Officer, Officer of the Day, Officer of the Deck and all Officers and Petty Officers of the Watch only. 7. Talk to no one except in the line of duty. 8. Give the alarm in case of fire or disorder. 9. Call the Corporal of the Guard or the Officer of the deck in any case not covered by instructions. 10. Salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased. 11. Be especially watchful at night and during the time for challenging, challenge all persons on or near my post, and allow no one to pass without proper authority. NOTE: All recruits will sound off in a loud, clear voice when asked for a particular order as shown in the following example: Instructor: What is the 10 th general order of a sentry? Cadet: Sir/Ma am, the 10th order of a sentry is to salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased, sir/ma'am!" LEARN 3 GENERAL ORDERS A WEEK TO HELP MEMORIZE THEM ALL!!!!! 4

SALUTING Except when walking, you should be at attention when saluting. A. Navy personnel salute the anthem, the flag, and officers as follows: B. Raise the right hand smartly until the tip of the forefingers touches the lower part of the headgear or forehead above and slightly to the right of the eye C. Extend and join the thumb and fingers. D. Turn the palm slightly inward until the person saluting can just see its surface from the corner of the right eye. E. The upper arm is parallel to the ground; the elbow is slightly in front of the body. F. Incline the forearm at a 45º angle; hand and wrist are in a straight line. G. Complete the salute (after it is returned) by dropping the arm to its normal Position in one sharp, clean motion The following are some of the major points you should remember when rendering a salute: A. Look directly into the officer s eyes as you salute. B. Salute officers even if they are uncovered or their hands are occupied. Your salute will be acknowledged by a verbal greeting, such as Good morning, Good afternoon, or something similar. C. If you are walking with or standing by a commissioned officer and the occasion for a salute arises, do not salute until the officer salutes. Assume that you are walking with a lieutenant. A commander approaches. Do not salute the commander until the lieutenant salutes; but as soon as the lieutenant starts to salute, you should quickly do the same. D. When approaching an officer, start your salute far enough away from the officer to allow time for your salute to be seen and returned. This space can vary; but a distance of about six paces is considered good for this purpose. Hold your salute until it is returned or until you are six paces past the officer. E. Salute all officers who are close enough to be recognized as officers. It is unnecessary to identify an officer by name; however, ensure that he/she is wearing the uniform of an officer. F. Salute properly and smartly. Avoid saluting in a casual or perfunctory manner. A sharp salute is a mark of a sharp Sailor. 7

It s always better to salute when you shouldn t, then not salute when you should! When walking in a small group, EVERYONE salutes A. When marching or standing in formation, however, the leader of the group salutes for the rest of you B. When you are covered and in uniform When boarding/departing a ship of the Navy/Coast Guard A. Turn to the aft (back) of the ship, face the National Ensign, and salute sharply 8

DRILL AND CEREMONIES Saluting: Cadets must be able to follow proper saluting protocol, including; the position of attention, the salute itself, as well as procedures for where and how to salute. Close Order Drill: Cadets must be proficient in basic facing movements, including, but not limited to; the Left, Right, and About facing movements. Additionally, cadets must be proficient in basic close order drill, to include: Marching, Column Movements, Flanking Movements, To the Rear, and Left and Right Stepping. Customs and Courtesies: Cadets must be able to properly carry out and explain military customs and courtesies, such as saluting, paying proper respect to, and appreciation for, the National Ensign, the National Anthem, and Colors Ceremonies. Additionally, cadets must be able to properly board and depart naval vessels. 9

NAVAL SCIENCE BASIC WATCHSTANDING From the time a ship or naval station is brought into service until the time it is decommissioned, there is a 24/7, 365 days per year watch being stood onboard by sailors to insure the safety, security, and well-being of the ship or installation, the surrounding area, and the sailors themselves. While different watches serve different purposes a standing a Fire Watch is different than standing a watch on the bridge all watches and watch standers operate under a fixed set of rules and regulations; these are called the 11 General Orders. The 11 General Orders are the most important thing for any watch-stander to remember; they are a very basic set of rules and regulations that are valid while standing any type of watch, and they provide a way of measuring a watch-standards efficiency, effectiveness, and dedication to duty. Additionally, the 11 General Orders provide a baseline that every sailor must know so that s/he can be thrust into an unfamiliar watch aboard an unfamiliar ship and still stand it properly. If watches are stood improperly the communications, safety, and security of the ship and all personnel will be in jeopardy. There is a specific procedure for assuming a watch, which every sailor is charged with knowing: A. Always be at your post 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the watch. That way the watch-stander you re relieving can brief you on anything that came up during his/her watch that may be relevant during yours. B. When the watch-stander has passed along all relevant information and the time has come to change the watch, state to the outgoing watch-stander I stand ready to properly relieve you. C. The outgoing watch-stander will then reply I stand properly relieved. S/he will then inform the Petty Officer of the Watch I have been properly relieved by [incoming watch-stander s name]. D. The incoming watch-stander will then inform the Petty Officer of the Watch I have assumed the duties as [name of station (i.e. Quarterdeck)]. E. The outgoing watch-stander should then depart the watch-station quickly, in order to keep the new watch-stander free from any distraction. 11

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS NLCC Cadets who transfer to the NSCC program may be advanced to E2-T under the following criteria. Unit commanding officers record an entry on the NSCC/NLCC Administrative Remarks form NSCADM 008. 1. A minimum of one year in the NLCC program with no break in service between programs. 2. Successfully completed NLCC Orientation Training scheduled by NHQ. NOTE: As a motivational tool, former NLCC cadets and highly motivated NSCC cadets who complete the BMR prior to attending NSCC Recruit Training, Time in Rate for E3 starts on the date the cadet is advanced to E2-T. NLCC League Cadet Advancement NLCC Advancement Requirements. The NLCC Training Syllabus is the source document for NLCC cadets. The syllabus contains activities and exams required for advancement. During the summer NLCC Orientation and NLCC Advanced Orientation is available for cadets to attend to augment the syllabus. Although this training is available it is NOT a requirement for advancement. The table below indicates the rate structure for NLCC cadets LC-1 through LC-6. The unit commanding officer is the advancement authority for NLCC cadets through all rates. 14

BOOT AND SHOE SHINE The quality of a soldier is often measured by how much time, effort and care he/she expends their boots. Here's how to apply that high-gloss spit shine: Here's How: 1. Spread a medium-thick layer of paste polish over the portion of the boot to be spit shined. 2. Allow it to dry for 5 to 10 minutes. 3. Wrap a soft, clean cloth around your index finger so that it is smooth (no wrinkles). Alternately, you can use a cotton ball. Dip your finger or the cotton ball into a container of water. The cloth/cotton should be wet, but not dripping. 4. Buff the dried polish (using a circular motion) with the wet cloth/cotton ball, until the wax starts to become shiney. 5. Still using the damp rag on your finger, apply a fine layer of polish in a circular motion and keep on rubbing lightly until a hazy shine develops. 6. Using the (now) damp cloth, or cotton ball, keep applying THIN coats of wax, buffing them with a small circular motion. 7. When the boot is highly glossed, use a clean dry soft cloth or a shining brush to give it a final buff. Tips: 1. The reason to use a wet cloth is to stop the fine coats of polish sticking to the cloth and to encourage the polish to stick to the leather. 2. You want to keep on building up thin layers of wax until you have a completely smooth surface that gives the glossy shine. 3. After the first heavy coat of polish you must use small amounts of polish to build up the shine. If you use too much polish, it will dissolve the base you have already built up. 4. T-shirts work well for the cloth material, as do cloth diapers. What You Need: 1. Shoe Polish 2. Cloth 3. Water 19
