PURPOSE This conference will provide the primary care physician and other health care providers a review of some of the most common surgical challenges and their management. The lectures will focus on the latest diagnostic and treatment approaches to general surgery topics. This program will expand the provider s knowledge, increase awareness of screening, surveillance and prevention, and optimize the cost efficient use of diagnostic testing as relevant to the surgical red flags. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this competence-based program, the learner should be able to: Differentiate between common abdominal bulges and the appropriate role of surgical management. Review the indications, mechanism of action, efficacy and potential challenges related to new weight loss drugs. Analyze the role of computed tomography as a complementary tool for the management and diagnostic evaluation of acute abdominal pain. Discuss the evaluation and management of atypical benign breast disease. Review the imaging strategies for efficient and thorough evaluation of both common and complex biliary diseases. Discuss the surgical management, pre-operative preparation and post-operative care of the surgical hyperthyroid patient. Discuss the most common benign peri-rectal problems: diagnosis, initial medical management and the role of surgery. Review the literature supporting the decision making for breast conservation versus bilateral mastectomy. Evaluate the physiological role and therapeutic outcomes for hyperbaric therapy patients with difficult or challenging wounds. Discuss the latest guidelines around controlled substance abuse and diversion.
