2017-18 Volume 2 - PRINCIPAL S CORNER by Patrick McKee, Principal Socktober Sock Drive is a Shoe-In with 3,124 Pairs of Socks Collected Thank you La Verne Heights Elementary School for a very successful Socktober sock drive. Our school collected 3,124 pairs of socks to support Shoes that Fit. Pictured here is Mrs. Garcia's second grade class who collected the most socks -- over 900 pairs! Augmented Reality Visits LVH At La Verne Heights, our goal is to ensure your child has the greatest educational experience possible. We are always looking for new ways to make learning come alive for our students. In this spirit, on November 6 th, we partnered with Google to bring their Augmented Reality (AR) Expeditions to our school. As a pioneer school, La Verne Heights provided every child with the unique opportunity to explore Google s new AR technology using a program that has not been released to the public. AR is more than virtual reality. It s a way to bring 3-D images of everything from fish to volcanoes into the classroom, providing children with a 360 degree view of the natural objects they are studying. It was quite a learning adventure for our students, as they were able to go on scientific adventures never before possible. LVH Rocks! Thank you to everyone who supported our Family Fundraising Night at Chipotle. We raised $357.30 for La Verne Heights!

Volume 2 Page 3 Students Enjoy PTA Carnival On October 27th, La Verne Heights enjoyed a spooky-good time at the PTA Carnival. This year's theme was "Halloween," and students came dressed in their favorite costumes. They enjoyed inflatables, games, and lots of good food. Mr. McKee, dressed as Harry Potter, even beat Jack Skellington in a pie eating contest. LVH Students Pledge to Make Good Choices The week of October 16th LVH students celebrated National Character Counts Week and Red Ribbon Week. Students pledged to live a life of outstanding character and healthy life choices. Pictured here are LVH students at the pledge board outside the cafeteria.

Volume 2 Page 4 La Verne Heights Elementary School Students Celebrate AR Accomplishments Each month our Librarian, Mrs. Bellomo, celebrates students with the AR 90% Lunch Table. This event honors students who are reading at 90% comprehension within their ZPD. Congratulations to our amazing readers! Congratulations to Chelsea Liu, the very first student at LVH to earn Plaque Level for the year...and she did this in October! She enjoyed her special Golden Day Celebration on October 13th. \ Students already at 56 points on their AR were rewarded with a special bonus recess on October 13th. They are commended for being on track for Plaque! One of the signature responsibilities of the LVH Student Council is presenting the Monday Morning Announcements. Student Council students share inspiring messages about the monthly character trait as well as reminders about activities for the week. They also pull the weekly Praise Slip (TRRFCC Slip) winners, who are able to choose from a variety of prizes donated by local restaurants and stores. Student Council Members Share Many Responsibilities

Volume 2 Page 5 La Verne Heights Elementary School in pictures As a part of our 4th and 5th grade music studies this year, Mrs. Bird is teaching her students how to play the ukulele. They are doing an amazing job learning musical notes through instruments. 1st Annual Principal for the Day Program On September 28th, the La Verne Chamber of Commerce hosted the first annual Principal for the Day program. Kristin Johnson from Foresters Financial spent the day at La Verne Heights learning about the great programs in place. She is pictured here with Mrs. Joyce's Rainbow Warriors. First Pizza Night Winners The first pizza night winners of The Habit Lunch with Mr. McKee were from fourth grade: Madison Scranton, Addy Tibbets and Michael Simpson. They enjoyed their special lunch on September 29th. Bits n P iece s N KI P M PU TCH PA October brought a great opportunity for our Kindergarten through 3rd graders to visit the pumpkin patch at Heritage Park. Students took a walking trip and enjoyed the tractor ride and picking a pumpkin. Pictured here is Mrs. Tucker's second grade class. Pictured here are some of Mrs. Horne's 3rd graders with their book buddies from Mrs. Fincher's class.
