Purdue Extension Dubois County January 2018 Clover Chronicles 4-H Enrollment It s January of 2018 and that means it s time to enroll as a member or volunteer in 4-H! If you haven t done it yet, there are several tips throughout this newsletter about what you need to know to enroll or re-enroll. Our online enrollment window ends on January 15th. Enroll NOW at in.4honline.com so you don t miss out! *NEW* Each One, Reach One 4-H Recruitment Campaign As previously mentioned, it s enrollment time for 4-H. This year, our goal is to increase our 4-H enrollment by 4% or about 35 youth members. In order to do this, we need your help! The best recruitment tool is often word of mouth. We want you to tell your friends about how awesome 4-H is! Many of you are already getting your friends to join 4-H, and now we want to reward you for it! The campaign is called Each One, Reach One. Here s how it will work: any current 4-H member in grades K -12 that recruits another youth to join Dubois County s 4-H program will have his/her name and the new member s name entered into a drawing to win prizes. Read more about it on page 2 in this newsletter. *NEW* 4-H Dinner & Basket Auction This year, the 4-H Council has decided to host a dinner and basket auction to raise money for the 4-H program. The event will take place on Saturday, February 10th in the Clover Pavilion. Doors will open at 5:30pm, and the meal will be served at 6pm. Adult meal tickets are $12 which includes a pork chop, creek fries, green beans, roll, and a drink. Kids meal tickets are $5 and include a hot dog instead of pork chop. We encourage everyone to attend and invite friends and neighbors to help support 4-H. If you plan to attend, please purchase tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased in the Extension Office or from 4-H Council members. Other 4-H Volunteers are also encouraged to help sell tickets to the event. Each One, Reach One Recruitment Campaign As was mentioned on page 1 and in a previous email, we have a recruitment campaign for the remainder of the online enrollment window (until January 16th). Any current 4-H member in grades K - 12 that recruits another youth to join Dubois County s 4-H program will have his/her name and the new member s name entered into a drawing to win prizes. If you encourage someone to join Dubois County s 4-H program and that person joins, submit your name and the name of the new member to me by email: jmonarch@purdue.edu or by calling the Extension Office at (812) 482-1782. It s a win/ win for everybody involved. There are a few guidelines with this campaign. Both the new and current members must be enrolled for 2018 to be eligible to receive prizes. Former 4-H youth will count towards this campaign if they were not enrolled during the 2016-2017 program year. Youth that transfer from another county do not count towards this campaign. Siblings of current members also do not count towards this campaign. We have lots of 4-H information if you d like to have some to share with your friends. Be sure to share about some of 4-H s less well known opportunities such as 4-H camp, 4-H trips, and non traditional projects. We will draw names for prizes on January 19 th after the end of our official enrollment window. We will announce the winners live on our Facebook page at noon that day. We will also inform the winners by email. So what prizes are we talking about? Prizes include ozobots, rural king gift cards, movie passes, holiday world tickets, 4-H gear, and more! We should have at least 40 prizes, so there will be many prizes to go around! Let's help build our program one member at a time! 2 4-H Program Updates We have a few 4-H updates for 2018. Additional updates will be provided in the coming months. Be sure to read the February newsletter that will contain several updates related to livestock, record sheets, and more! The Science of Star Wars Spark Club We plan to hold this spark club related to the science featured in Star Wars at some point this year. We have not officially scheduled a date yet because we are in need of some more adult volunteers. It will most likely take place on a Saturday at VUJC. Please contact the office if you or someone you know would be interested in helping with this event. No prior knowledge is required, but any helper would need to be enrolled as a current 4-H volunteer. Beef project In order to take an beef animal to the state fair, you will now need to provide a DNA hair sample similar to how Swine does it. Beef weigh-in will be a good time to provide a hair sample to us if you plan to take the animal to the state fair. Beef weigh-in will take place on Saturday, January 27th. The deadline to submit the sample will be the same as the deadlines to identify animals in 4HOnline (April 2nd for beef steers and May 15th for others). Personality & Weeds projects Both Personality and Weeds are no longer state fair projects. That means that the projects cannot go to the state fair and that the state will no longer provide manuals or other resources to support the project. As a result, we will no longer be able to offer these projects at the county level. They are currently working on developing a new project that will teach similar concepts as the personality project, but the new project will not be available this year. Contact the office if you have any questions.

4-H Club Basket Request As mentioned on the front page of the newsletter, there will be a 4-H Dinner and Basket Auction to help raise money to support the 4-H program and fairgrounds. But we need your help! The 4-H Council Fundraising committee is asking each club to gather items to donate to make a basket that would be auctioned off in a silent auction at the event. The basket can be related to the club & 4-H or it can have other items in it. For example, if a parent or club leader sells pampered chef, you could donate a pampered chef basket. We hope to get one basket from every club so there are several items for people to bid on. If some clubs cannot provide enough items for an entire basket, then supplemental items such as coupons or gift certificates would also work well. We would like to get the entire 4-H community involved to help make this event a success. Baskets and supplemental items are needed by February 5th. Please contact the office or the 4-H Council if you have questions. Questions? Contact the Office at 812-482-1782 or email: jmonarch@purdue.edu 3 Adult Volunteer Meetings Below you will find the remaining adult leader/volunteer meetings until fair time. All the meetings will be held in the Clover Pavilion at the Fairgrounds. The meetings typically provide important 4-H updates for volunteers, trainings over relevant topics, and other information related to the adult leader food stand. We encourage anyone considering being a volunteer to attend these meetings. Parents are certainly welcome as well. All volunteers are required to complete minor safety training every 2 years. Most volunteers will need to renew their training for 2018. This training can be completed through 4HOnline or in-person. An in-person training will be offered at the conclusion of the January 18th meeting. January 18th at 7pm (featuring active shooter training & minor safety training) April 17th at 7pm June 28th at 7pm Volunteer Vision: There is also a state 4-H newsletter known as Volunteer Vision that also includes helpful information. You can find each month s version of the Volunteer Vision here: http://bit.ly/2khixaf

Scholarship & Trip Information Scholarship Applications are due January 25th and will need to be submitted through 4HOnline. Members can login and submit applications themselves or send applications to the office to be submitted. However, applications should be turned in early to insure that they are received on time. Members must be active in the system before they can submit. Visit http:// bit.ly/2kk5vff for more information and access to applications. Do you need help filling out your application? Feel free to contact Jenny Monarch McGuire at the Extension Office. She is scheduling appointments (during or outside of office hours) to meet with members to work on applications. She can also review and edit applications that are sent to her electronically. If you d like help with your scholarship, please contact her ASAP. Applications received after January 15th are not guaranteed to be reviewed prior to the January 25th deadline. Extended office hours would be great times to come in for scholarship help. Our office will be open until 6pm on January 10th, 11th, and 16th. County Trip Applications are due February 23rd and can be submitted to the office in person, through the dropbox, or via email at jmonarch@purdue.edu. You can access county trip applications and additional information at the following link: http://bit.ly/2jkqcpg T-shirt Design Contest Once again, we will be having a t-shirt design contest for the 2018 Dubois County 4-H t-shirts. We are asking for t-shirt designs for the front of our 4-H T-shirts. Anyone (4-H Member, Parent, Volunteer, etc.) interested in creating a design should submit entries to Purdue Extension Dubois County BEFORE February 2nd, 2017. The theme this year is Rooted in 4-H. All submitted designs should incorporate the theme, year, and Dubois County 4-H into the design. It is also suggested to incorporate a tree and/ or roots into the design. All entries will be considered and looked at by the Dubois County 4-H Junior Leaders. Once the top five have been selected, the 4-H Council will announce the winning shirt. Please note that creative rights will be given to the t-shirt printer. Newsletter Code We will continue to have newsletter codes that the 4-H readers will have to find and guess. The first 5 families who find the code embedded in the newsletter will be able to contact jmonarch @purdue.edu for a prize. This month, the code is an answer that can be found elsewhere in the newsletter. What is the name of the new 4-H recruitment campaign during January? 4

Extended Office Hours and Enrollment Information The online enrollment window began on October 1st and will last until January 15th*. In an effort to help with this process, we have included tips in this newsletter. Instructions are also available at in.4honline.com when you login. We are also offering a few nights of extended office hours towards the end of the enrollment season to help families get enrolled. We will have extended office hours on January 10th, 11th, and 16th from 8-6 pm to assist with enrolling members, volunteers, minor safety training, payment, and anything else families need help with. You will also find an enrollment card below. It is designed to help families remember their login information. The card has a place for the family email and password for your 4HOnline account as well as important dates when you would need your login in formation. Enrollment Tips: You can go directly to the login screen to enroll by going to in.4honline.com 4HOnline is the online system that we use for enrollment, signing up for events, ordering t-shirts, pins, animal ID, etc. You do NOT have access to all the features of 4-H unless you are active in 4HOnline. The fastest and easiest way to become active is to pay by credit card when you enroll online. The system defaults to 4H check, so be sure to select credit card during the process. The sooner you enroll online, the sooner that you get information sent to your family, and you will start receiving 4-H updates. The Extension Staff would be happy to help any families or members who need assistance. 5

Enrollment Tips Multiple children discount: If you have more than 3 children that are currently in regular 4-H, you are entitled to a discount. Families will only be required to pay for 3 children. In order to insure that you receive this discount, be sure to select the check option for payment on any children who should receive the free enrollment. Enrolling multiple children: Carefully review your payment method when you enroll each child. The 4HOnline system usually defaults to check. If you want to pay with a card, be sure to select that payment with each member. Email preferences: Please put an email that you will be likely to check throughout the year. Some 4-H updates need to be sent in a timely manner, so it is easiest to send via email. Newsletters will be sent based on your preferences. Please select mail preference if you wish to always receive a mailed copy of the newsletter. Internet browser: 4HOnline is not as compatible with Internet Explorer. It is recommended that you sign up using another browser like Google Chrome or Firefox. These browsers are free to download from the internet. Computer/Laptop: It is recommended for all members or volunteers to re-enroll using laptops or computers. Tablets and phones can cause problems when reenrolling. 4HOnline Status Definitions: Inactive: the member or volunteer has not re-enrolled for the current year. Incomplete: the member or volunteer started enrolling but did not finish the process. Pending: the enrollment has been submitted but we are missing something such as a payment (youth) or paperwork (volunteers) Active: the member or volunteer have enrolled for the current year and everything has been received & approved.
