This conference is particularly timely in view of the tremendous importance of science and technology in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs, which replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) this year, will help guide sustainable development efforts during the next 15 years. Improvements in the food and agricultural sectors are essential to achieve these goals and thus improve human and environmental health.
