Materials not provided. This fun and explorative course suitable for beginners will introduce students to the fundamentals of working with acrylic paints and mediums. The focus of the program is on the application and experimentation of a variety of gels, pastes and mediums that create depth and texture in the work produced. Beginner to intermediate painters will enjoy exploring and experimenting with this versatile medium. Whether on paper, canvas or wood, two or three dimensional, non-representation or realism, the course will cover colour mixing, brushwork, and more. In class demonstrations, gallery visits and discussion are important components of the program. Materials not included. This course is a continuation of the acrylic and oil paintings courses offered. Students will build on knowledge gained to further develop their representational and abstract paintings. Go in depth and experiment with mixed media material, gel mediums and use of colour. Students will also learn how to build up a cohesive body of work for art shows/exhibitions. In- class demonstration, discussion and lectures will also be used to facilitate learning. Projects are self-directed with advanced critiques used as a positive learning tool. All media welcome. Materials not included. Portrait is an examination of character. But to be able to portray that effectively there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration for a portrait to be successful. This includes an understanding of the human face and figure, composition, light and shadow, drapery and colour. This course will build on those foundations that were learned in the Art of the Portrait, and test your ability to apply them. Using live subjects, extended poses will be used to enable the student to complete finished portraits as in-class exercises. Emphasis will be put on the actual set up of the subject and backdrop as well as the chosen pose. The poses themselves may last for two consecutive classes. This class is for students who have already taken a portraiture or figure drawing and want to hone their abilities of creating finished portraits. A model fee of $50 (cash) is payable to the instructor on the first day. Beginners The perfect introductory class for students who would like to explore art making and would like to start gently. Professional artist Glenn Bernabe introduces the fundamentals of form, perspective, proportion, contour and composition. Students will use conte, charcoal and ink and be introduced to specific exercises designed to develop drawing and observation skills. Winter 2017/18 Join us for Life Drawing sessions in our studio! These sessions offer the opportunity for artists to practice nude drawing practices and build a social and artistic network by meeting and working amongst their peers. There will be 5 first come, first served, nonrefundable spots available each week for preregistration at $15 each; all other spaces will be available on a drop-in basis. Sessions $20 each/ 4 Session pass for $70. Mixed Media and Collage affords tremendous opportunities for artistic growth and creative exploration. Drawing materials, paints, papers and found objects will be manipulated and/or combined in the creation of a body of work. The principles of composition and design, surface quality, colour and value systems, imagery and concepts will be discussed to guide you in your creative process. This course for the beginner to intermediate artist is designed to help students develop basic fundamentals of painting in oil, including material and surface choices. Beginners This introductory course by a professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how you can express yourself through the camera, to share ideas and inner feelings. Participants will become familiar with composition techniques so your image will get the wow factor and you will investigate how light affects form, colour and composition; how to choose the right shooting angle and create perspective; how to look at light; and how to best use light and shadow. Get to better know the workings of your digital SLR camera to best utilize this unique instrument so you can capture that moment in time! An introductory course to the features and functions of your camera is recommended prior to this course. All supplies will be discussed in the first class so you need not purchase them ahead of time. If you have any of the following, please bring them: Laptop computer, tripod, flash, memory cards and stick, batteries, and charger. This intermediate photography course is a continuation of the Photography for Beginners course. Students will use the knowledge gained in the introductory course to address specific topics in photography and expand their already existing knowledge. Students will be introduced to the history of photography and its development as an art form. Creative genres such as portraiture, landscape, still-life, creative night photography, documentary and street photography will be discussed in more detail and students will be lead through a series of hands-on exercises and take-home projects to further develop their portfolio. Students will also be introduced to the creative potential of using an off-camera flash. Each week a new topic will be addressed and the final class will include a portfolio review of each student s work. Students are required to have a digital SLR camera and one lens, as well as the following recommended supplies: camera battery and charger, memory card, access to a computer and photo editing application/software, USB stick and a tripod (if you have one). All supplies will be discussed in the first class. **Please note that students must have taken the Photography for Beginners class prior to registering for this course, or possess the equivalent knowledge** Learn the basics of watercolour painting - colour, brush techniques, and other methods of applying the paint. Emphasis will be placed on solid drawing, composition, and colour theory. No experience required. Materials not included. This course in drawing and painting is suited for the absolute beginner. For four weeks, the emphasis is on learning the fundamentals in drawing such as composition, contour, proportion, form and perspective. The last four weeks will be based on sketching and painting with watercolours, with a focus on washes, layering and rendering in pen and ink and studying Varley s field sketches. In class demonstrations, gallery visits, independent work and discussion are important components of the program. Materials not included. Participants should have a firm working knowledge of basic watercolour techniques and materials and are ready to advance their skills and knowledge of painting in watercolour beyond the beginner level. Traditional and experimental techniques, colour and value systems, composition and painting styles will be explored through demonstrations, in-class painting and homework. Adult Workshops The art of tea appreciation originated from China and was formally documented in The Classic of Tea during 780 AD. Influenced by major school of thoughts including Confucianism, Taoism and Zennism, the art of tea appreciation is based on the ideology of uniting man and nature through a mindful act of preparing, serving and enjoying tea. In this workshop, participants will learn and experience the art of tea appreciation, which is a process of preparing a quiet and clean environment to make and enjoy tea, preparing water, selecting tea and teaware, brewing and serving tea, and appreciating the appearance, aroma and flavour of the tea. Participants will enjoy the natural qualities of tea, the aesthetics of the teaware and environment, as well as the spiritual fulfilment from being present in the moment of making and appreciating tea. This workshop also serves as a preview of the two-part series of classes titled The Art of Tea Appreciation Series Part 1 & Part 2. An ongoing cardiac rehab support program designed for patients who have completed a medically supervised Cardiac Program or have been recommended by their physician to become more active to combat cardiovascular disease. There will be two components to the class program involving walking a track and in class resistance training. The instructors of this program carry the certification of Certified Exercise Physiologist designated by the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP). Detailed health questionnaire must be completed and a meeting with the class instructor arranged before the potential participant can join the class. You will develop new skills for pain management, nutrition, creating mind-body connection, stress management and postural/body awareness using proven techniques for success. Chiropractic Doctors and exercise therapists will help you to understand the challenges you face and offer potential solutions. In these four sessions doctors will assist you in regaining function while more effectively controlling your pain. This program is a pre-requisite to the Chronic Pain Management - Aqua Rehab program Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions can be very disabling. Aqua therapy is well researched as a gateway to better health and has long been revered for its effectiveness in increasing function and decreasing pain. The Chiropractic Doctors running this program will help decrease your pain, increase your energy and reclaim your life. Specific exercises will be shown to you to increase your flexibility, strength and function. You will also be taught which movements to avoid, both in the pool and in your regular activities of daily living in order to prevent your pain from recurring. No experience is required, as our instructors will lead you step by step through the process of creating your own masterpiece. Paints, brushes, and canvas are provided. Focus will be on applying previously covered subject matters (Basic footwork, ball control, serve & volley, double strategies) to our game-play and a discussion around usage of those skills to make better shot selections. Focus will be on the different types of footwork, shuffle steps, crossovers and using proper footwork to setup for shots as well as hitting the ball while on the move.
