John Rckett, Edtor ofthe Newsletter, requested that any comments on the Newsletter be gven to hm. He reported that the Executve Commttee had voted to contnue the membershp drve usng the fall newsletter. Robn Anderson, Charman of the Scence Educaton Commttee, ponted out the need for a contnung Scence Educaton Commttee and the need for the Academy to support and encourage actvty. A resoluton wllbe presented at the Second Busness Meetng. Mke Rapp, Drector of the Arkansas Scence Far Assocaton, reported on the Scence Far and the Junor Academy. Seven Regonal Fars have been held and the State Far and Junor Academy meetng wllbe held n Conway on Aprl11 &12. About 170 for the Scence Far and 75 for the Junor Academy are expected. Dr. Norm Hoover s Drector of the Junor Academy. Contnued support from the Academy wllbe requested at the Second Busness Meetng. John Peck, Drector ofthe Arkansas Scence Talent Search, reported that the program s gong well and that cash awards have been gven to frst and second place wnners. Art Fry, Charman of the Consttuton Commttee, reported on recommended changes to the consttuton. The proposed changes were dstrbuted and wll be acted on at the Second Busness Meetng. LeoPaulssen, Charman ofthe Commttee on Endowments, reported on the endowment fund. Pel Frez has donated $200. The Fayettevlle Sgma X Chapter has donated $100. ndvdual contrbutons have brought the total to $400. A total of$500 s needed for a CD. nterest wllbe used to support actvtes. He also reported on the Bota Survey. Two new checklsts are avalable ncludng one on spders. The Undergraduate Awards Commttee for the current meetng wll be Jm Huey (Charman), Joe Guenter, and Bll Ncholson. The Resolutons Commttee wll consst ofed Wlson (Charman), George Harp, and Dale Ferguson. The moton was seconded and passed. Art Johnson, Treasurer, moved that the Treasurer's Report be approved. The moton was seconded. Raj Klamb presented the followng report from the Audt Commttee. The Audt Commttee examned the attached 1984-85 Annual Fnancal Record of the Academy and checked them wth the detaled accounts submtted to us. nour opnon, all recepts and expendtures are adequately accounted for and the books are n balance. t was moved and seconded to accept the report of the Audt Commttee. The moton passed. The ntalmoton concernng acceptance of the Treasurer's Report passed. Rck McDanel, Edtor ofthe Proceedngs, stated that the Sxty-Eghth Proceedngs wllbe ready for dstrbuton n June. nso far as possble, copes wllbe maled n packets to varous nsttutons. tnow appears that a good number of papers wllbe ncluded n next year's Proceedngs. McDanel presented the followng moton. Mr. Presdent and members of the Arkansas Academy ofscence, move that the Academy allocate $500.00 for edtoral assstance and $120.00 for travel by the Edtor durng the next year. Ths s the same amount authorzed last year. The moton was seconded and passed. John Rckett, Edtor of the Newsletter, moved that $475 be allocated for the Newsletter for next year. The moton was seconded and passed. Henry Robson, Hstoran, reported that ths s the Sxty-Nnth Annual Meetng and the thrd to be held n Montcello. ts the frst meetng here snce 1942. He noted the passng of Dr. Dwght Moore, founder of the modern Academy, and stated that he had recorded comments by Dr. Moore pror to hs death. He also stated that he needs any old pctures of past actvtes, offcers, and so forth. ArtFry, Charman of the Consttuton Commttee, moved the adopton of the proposed changes n the Consttuton as dstrbuted at the Frst Busness Meetng. The report s as follows: The Consttuton Commttee ofthe Arkansas Academy of Scence, Peggy Dorrs, Clark McCarty, and ArtFry (Charman), recommends the followng changes to the By-Laws of AAS: A. Change Artcle 6. whch now reads: 6. Expendtures exceedng $50 requre an order sgned by the Presdent before payment can be made. To read: 6. Expendtures n excess of$200 whch have not been specfcally authorzed by the Academy at a pror annual busness meetng requre wrtten approval by the Presdent before payment can be made. B. Add a new Artcle 15: 15. The Arkansas Academy of Scence s the parent organzaton of the Arkansas Junor Academy of Scence. The appontment the Drector of the Arkansas Junor Academy of Scence s made by the Presdent of the Arkansas Academy of Scence for a perod of three years. Change Artcle 4. whch now reads: 4. The Edtoral Board shall be under nooblgaton to consder papers submtted after ths date. To read: 4. The nomnees were Gary Tucker, Arkansas Tech Unversty, and George Harp, Arkansas State Unversty. Ballots were dstrbuted. A count ofthe ballots ndcated that Gary Tucker had been elected as Vce Presdent. Walter Godwn on behalf of MkeRapp, Drector of the Arkansas Scence Far Assocaton, moved that the Academy agan approprate $)00 for the support ofthe Scence Far. The moton was seconded anj passed. Walter Godwn on behalf of Norm Hoover, Drector of the Junor Academy, moved that the Academy agan approprate $200 for support of the Junor Academy. The moton was seconded and passed. Dr. Tom Palko, Drector of the Arkansas Junor Scence and Humantes Symposum, reported that the symposum was held n Russellvlle ths year wth 99 papers beng submtted wth 19 of those beng presented and sx wnners gong on to Natonal. Robn Anderson, Charman of the Scence presented a resoluton as follows: Educaton Commttee, The next several years wllbe very actve ones for scence educaton n Arkansas. Ths may nvolve numerous actvtes at college level for the Arkansas Academy of Scence and ts members, plus new opportuntes for cooperaton wth other professonal organzatons and educatonal and communty agences. To assst the Presdent and Executve Commttee n meetng these needs, we recommend that the Scence Educaton Commttee be apponted on a contnung bass. The resoluton was adopted. Jm Huey, Charman of the Undergraduate Awards Commttee, commended the students for a job well done at the current meetng. He reported that the Undergraduate Awards had been won by: Mark S. Ross - UALR - Demonstraton ofa Heat-Stable Guanosne Monophosphate (Cyclc GMP) Phosphodesterase from the Medum of the Myxomycete Physarum flavcomum Terry Glton - UALR - Thermosettng Adhesve Resns from Whey and Whey Byproducts The Executve Commttee has voted to award $50 to each wnner on a contnung bass. Leo Paulssen, Charman ofthe Commttee on Endowments, repeated nformaton on the endowment fund from the frst busness meetng. He added that ndvdual donatons had rased the total to over $400. He mentoned that donatons may be made n the form of memorals. nregard to the Bota Survey, he reemphaszed the avalablty of two new checklsts ncludng one on spders. The Academy apprecates the efforts of the varous secton charpersons and recognzes that they play an mportant role n the conduct of the meetng. To be noted are: R. Rck McDanel (Vertebrate Zoology ), Don Culwell (Botany), Dale Ferguson (Mcrobology and mmunology), Roland McDanel (Aquatc and Envronment ),Dan England (Vertebrate Zoology ), Peggy Dorrs (nvertebrate Zoology), James Daley (Parastology and Bomedcne), and George Harp (Scence Educaton). The Academy expresses grattude to the varous drectors ofthe scence youth actvtes whch are supported by the Academy: Robn Anderson and Art Brown, Scence Educaton Commttee; Mke Rapp, Drector of the Arkansas State Scence Far; Tom Palko, Drector ofthe Junor Scence and Humantes Symposum; John Peck and Leo Paulssen, Scence Talent Search; and Norman Hoover, Drector of the Arkansas Junor Academy of Scence.
