American Legion Post 60 Veterans Outreach Program Veterans Helping Veterans Seek Employment Chapter 1

THE AMERICAN LEGION INCORPORATED Laurel Maryland Post No. 60 DEPARTMENT OF MARYLAND 2 MAIN STREET, LAUREL, MARYLAND 20707-4304 December 3, 2011 TO: Any Unemployed Veterans FROM: Angela Surratt Subject: Outreach to Assist Unemployed Veterans Program The Obama Administration is supporting the bill to assist unemployed Veterans in finding jobs. I immediately want to volunteer for my Legion and obtain the appropriate information that could be posted on our website regarding this initiative. So...here it is: I have done a lot of reading, research, and compiled some brochures/documents which will provide critical information to unemployed Vets in our Maryland/DC/Virginia area. All of this is public information which I compiled from several Federal Government websites. As a result, if you are an unemployed Veteran, here is the information you need. You do not need to look any further. I compiled several brochures and documents into a Post 60 Veterans Outreach Program, Chapters 1, 2 and 3 that help explain the process. It is very important have a "Gold Card to start the employment assistance. Simply access the Department of Labor website: ( http://www.dol.gov/vets/goldcard/revisedgoldcard5.pdf ) and print the revisedgoldcard5.pdf (Example is on page 2 of Chapter1) and take it to a Career One Stop Center that is closest to you. (Example on page 5 of Chapter 1) These centers provide unemployed Veterans the assistance needed to help them find employment. If you do not have access to the Internet, please ask your Post Adjutant to print out a copy of the "Gold Card." Unemployed veterans will soon get a much-needed boost in the job market with expanded education, training and transition assistance. Here is a brief description of these initiatives: The VOW to Hire Heroes Act, once signed into law, will boost employment opportunities for veterans. Key provisions include: Tax credit of up to $5,600 for hiring veterans who have been looking for a job for more than six months, as well as a $2,400 credit for veterans who are unemployed for more than four weeks, but less than six months. Tax credit of up to $9,600 for hiring veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been looking for a job for more than six months. Makes the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) mandatory for service members moving on to civilian life to help them secure meaningful jobs through resume-writing workshops and career counseling. Expands education and training opportunities for older veterans by providing 100,000 unemployed veterans of past eras and wars with up to one year of additional Montgomery GI Bill benefits for education or training programs at community colleges and technical schools.

Provides disabled veterans up to one year of additional vocational rehabilitation and employment benefits. Allows service members to start looking for federal jobs before separating from active duty in order to facilitate a truly seamless transition from the military to jobs at federal agencies. The American Legion truly supports these initiatives. Taken from the American Legion website: 1) The Hiring Heroes Act would add two years to the Wounded Warrior Act for severely disabled veterans, make the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) mandatory for all separating service members, and expand training and compensation for employers who hire severely disabled veterans; and 2) The Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act improves and mandates the Training Assistance Program (TAP) program, expands training for approximately 600,000 veterans between the ages of 35 and 60, and works to improve transferability of military experience into credits for civilian credentialing and licensing.
