FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1) What type of USEF membership do I need to participate in this program? If you compete at USEF licensed competitions you should apply for a USEF Competing Junior Membership. If you do not compete at USEF competitions, you can join as a non-competing member. 2) What is the application fee? $15 per program year. An application and fee must be submitted for each year of participation. 3) What happens after I send in my application? After USEF receives your application, an email will be sent to you with information about the program. 4) What is the time frame to meet the hour and competition requirements? Each program year runs from June 1 through May 31. Any hours or competitions within the program year may be used, regardless of when you sign up for the program. 5) What is the deadline to submit all the required materials? All documentation must be complete and received in the USEF office by June 15 for graduating seniors. 6) If I have already met the requirements of the program do I have to wait until May 31st to submit everything? No. We encourage you to submit your log, competition record, and proof of enrollment as soon as you have met all the requirements. There is an enormous increase in submissions received at the USEF near the end of the program year which greatly increases the processing time to up to two weeks. Submit your documentation early for faster processing. 7) Can I send my documentation in separately? No, please send all of your records (hour log, competition verification, and proof of enrollment) in together at the same time. Online submissions are preferred and are typically processed faster. Sending piecemeal paperwork through multiple avenues increases the amount of time spent processing each submission and increases the possibility of lost documents. Please keep a copy of everything you are submitting for your records. 8) What do I send to provide proof of enrollment in school? Current report card, current transcript, current mid-term report card or certification of enrollment in a home schooling program. Verification must include student s name, appropriate grading period, and institution name/homeschool designation. Please black out your social security number if it appears on your transcript before submitting the document. 9) How many hours does the program require? 100 Hours which can include riding, lessons, lunging, driving, vaulting, hacking, trail riding, ground training, riding at competitions, etc. Only time spent actively working with a horse will count. The following cannot be used towards the hour requirement: barn chores, grooming, tacking up, stall cleaning, cleaning tack, time driving to competitions, time spent at competitions when you are not riding, etc. 11) Can I use hours and competitions from before I signed up for the program? Yes, you can use any hours or competitions during the program year (June 1-May 31), regardless of when you signed up. 12) What are the competition requirements? Students must compete in three competitions during the program year. Any show that is organized by a horse show organization or club will count towards the requirement. Example: USEF, AQHA, 4-H, Pony Club, IEA, any state or local horse association shows, schooling shows, rodeos, drill team competitions, polo matches, etc. 13) What do I submit as verification that I have met the competition requirements? Verification must include student s name as a competitor along with the competition s name and date. Verification accepted includes results printed from an online source, invoice from competition, signed letter from competition organizer. 14) Can I apply for previous years in school? Yes, we do allow students to sign up retroactively as long as they are in grades 5-12. For example, a sophomore just finding out about the program can also sign up for their 5th-9th grade years. Students are still required to apply for each year and provide verification for each year they are enrolled to meet the requirements for that year. 15) How do I submit my documentation? Online: https://www.usef.org/_auaiframes/login/default.aspx 16) When will I receive my free letterman patch and year pin? You will receive an email after you submit your documents either approving the submission or requesting additional information. If your submission is approved, instructions will be included in the email on how to order your free letterman patch and year pin from our distributor. These items are free but are not sent automatically upon completion. You MUST order these items online. 17) Who can I contact with questions about the program? Visit www.usef.org/lettering or email lettering@usef.org or call 859-258-2472.
