Background Information St Vincent s Health Australia (SVHA) is Australia s largest Catholic not-for-profit health and aged care provider. Its services comprise 27 facilities along the east coast of Australia including: 6 public hospitals 8 private hospitals 13 aged-care facilities 4 co-located research institutes (Victor Chang Cardiac Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, O Brien Institute and the St Vincent s Institute of Medical Research) SVHA is significant in its size and impact, operating more than 2500 beds, 1100 aged care places, employing over 16,000 staff including over 1500 medical practitioner and utilising the skill and generosity of over 1300 volunteers. Founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Charity in Sydney, SVHA provides a diverse range of services in health to the community. All SVHA entities share the same mission: to provide high quality and efficient research and health services in accordance with the philosophy of St Vincent s Health Australia. This mission is based on the values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence. SVHA is a clinical and educational leader with a national and international reputation in medical research. Its areas of expertise include heart lung transplantation; bone marrow transplantation; cardiology; neurosurgery; cancer; clinical genomics; HIV medicine; palliative care; respiratory medicine; mental health; drug and alcohol services; aged psychiatry; homeless health; and prisoner health. SVHA owns and operates both St Vincent s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM), a leading public teaching, research and tertiary health service, which employs more than 5,000 staff across 18 sites throughout Melbourne; and St Vincent s Private Hospital Melbourne, an acute care centre with 440 beds and more than 1,600 staff working across three locations (Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Kew). SVHA is undergoing a period of enormous growth, building new entities such as a Private Hospital in Werribee and the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery in Melbourne. Capital Campaign the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) Australia has one of the best health care systems in the world. St Vincent s Health Australia is a significant player in this system as the largest private provider of health care in the Eastern States, including two renowned specialist tertiary public hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney. Medical research in Australia is also strongly regarded. However, Australia s health system has a gap in cross-disciplinary integration of science, medicine and engineering to solve complex health problems with biomedical engineering and to commercialise the outcomes for economic benefit. Furthermore, existing medical research facilities are mainly focused on basic page 3

Background Information (continued) scientific questions (with long-term outcomes) rather than practical shorter term engineering solutions to the highly prevalent clinical problems of today. The ACMD will be a biomedical engineering research and training hub in an iconic location on the corner of Nicholson St and Victoria Parade on the campus of St. Vincent s Hospital Melbourne, providing a cornerstone to guide a culture of innovation in health care. It will combine expertise in medicine, science and engineering from five universities as well as research institutes, the Hospital itself and industry partners to develop solutions for problems with high clinical priority and impact. Industry partners, often missing in academic research projects, will provide a vital role by providing an assessment of the path to translation of research projects and the likely real world barriers to development as well as the potential for application and commercialisation. The medical problems that the ACMD will address over time will be diverse with the initial priorities including: Limb, joint and tissue regeneration and repair for patients affected by trauma, osteoarthritis or cancer based on developments in 3D printing Implantable devices made of biocompatible materials for detection and treatment of epilepsy New cell therapies to treat diabetes without insulin injections Cross-disciplinary approaches to discover new pharmaceuticals for cancer and dementia. The ACMD concept first appeared in 2007, when leading health, university and research institutions led by St. Vincent s Health Melbourne (SVHM) joined forces to leverage their strength in healthcare and medical research to address areas such as: Removing the barriers to collaboration and sharing of resources Speeding up clinical translation through a better targeted and tailored research focus Renewing outdated and inadequate physical facilities bringing all collaborators (nationwide) into one building Fully integrating medical, engineering and scientific education with both research and clinical care As the concept developed, the common theme and significant opportunity by the Partners was biomedical engineering the convergence of medicine, science with rapidly developing and emerging areas of engineering. This convergence, the novel inclusion of training, the vital role of industry and the focus on relatively short-term solutions add up to the distinctiveness of ACMD the first hospital-based biomedical engineering research and education centre in Australia. Industry collaboration will help ensure that ACMD plans and processes can enhance translation of research, review programs of work and facilitate the commercial development of individual projects into new businesses. ACMD will also foster the next generation of researchers, clinicians and engineers by integrating education into the centre. Limited workforce development is one of the barriers to achieving greater commercialisation of research discoveries. Tertiary graduates emerge from their research projects with deep experience in a particular area but limited workplace skills. The ACMD will provide a unique opportunity to fully integrate education into the research environment. The ACMD partnership has grown over the years to include 9 collaborating research and education partners, with our focus now on building industry partners to optimise the commercial and industry benefits of the concept. To date close to $100million out of our $180million target has been committed ($60m from the Victorian State Government and approximately $38m from ACMD partners). We know that this Centre is vital and are working with the Federal Government to seek further funding. It is expected that $40m will come from philanthropic sources, to be raised by 2021.
