SPOTLIGHT ON QUE Submitted By Brother Stan Bey Professor Omar Montgomery University of Colorado Denver Omar Montgomery enjoys working one-on-one with students at the University of Colorado Denver. His most notable contribution is coordinating the Rites of Passage Program, a cultural approach to develop future leaders. This program was organized by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The goal of ROP is to provide youth with the confidence and social tools needed to approach many of the distractions that may affect their ability to become productive members of society. As the director of Black Student Services, Mr. Montgomery started the annual Rosa Parks Diversity Awards Luncheon in 2006. This event recognizes CU Denver faculty, staff and community leaders for their contributions to diversity. He was instrumental with starting the Junior Black Chamber of Commerce Leadership Training Program, which provides CU Denver students with a full academic year of leadership training. Mr. Montgomery is committed to increasing the number of first generation, low-income students at the University of Colorado Denver. Mr. Montgomery believes, Building future leaders is essential to the future of America. Today, we joyfully present the Shoes of Justice Community Service Award to Professor Omar Montgomery For his tireless efforts to inspire young hearts and minds to live a life of Justice and activism. By Robert E. Sly Submitted by Brother James Seay I Am Habit It is mighty hard to shake me, In my brawny arms, I take thee; I can either make or break thee; Through each day I slowly mold thee; Soon my tight ning chains enfold thee; Then it is with ease I hold thee; This is Habit! I can be both good and vile; I can e en be worth your while, Or the cause of your bitter cry;. Oft I ve proved myself a pleasure; (Continued on page 6) Chi Phi Speaks 5 Chiphiques.com
Proved myself a priceless treasure, Or a menace past all measure; Thus is Habit! Harmless though I sometimes seem, yet My strange force is like a magnet; Like a great and greedy dragnet; Though you sometimes fear or doubt me No one yet has lived without me; I am present all about thee; Thus is Habit! Choose me well when you are starting Seldom is an easy parting; I m a devil or a darling! Chi Phi Speaks 6 Chiphiques.com
