After intense training exercises in FLEETEX/SOCEX in July, SHREVEPORT was ready to deploy as part of the USS AMERICA Joint Task Force 2-93. The battle group departed Norfolk on 11 August and embarked Marines and equipment in Morehead City, NC on 12 August. Arriving in Rota, Spain on 25 August, SHREVEPORT received her turnover and got underway for Spanish PHIBLEX which involved the Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) training with the Spanish Navy and Marines. Upon completion of the exercise, SHREVEPORT transit the Mediterranean Sea to Izmir, Turkey for the initial planning conference in preparation for the largest exercise of the cruise, Exercise "Dynamic Guardn. During "Dynamic GuardM, SHREVEPORT served as primary control ship for two exercise amphibious assaults in company with the Turkish Navy. SHREVEPORT1s visit to Trieste, Italy following "Dynamic Guard" was shortened when the ARG received tasking to make best speed to Mogadishu, Somalia in support of Operation "Restore Hopen. Transiting the Suez Canal on 11 ober and passing through the Red Sea and Indian Ocean 12 through 14 ober, SHREVEPORT arrived off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia on 15 ober where she remained until 06 ember. After completing the Suez Canal transit back into the Mediterranean Sea on 10 ember, SHREVEPORT participated in Exercise "Bright Staru with Egypt, steaming to Toulon, France for a much anticipated port visit after the exercise.
