THE JOB The health care field offers many job opportunities in a variety of challenging environments. The nurse aide works in the hospital, clinic, nursing home, doctor s office, or sometimes in a private home to assist in the care of patients. Nurse aides work under the supervision of the nursing and medical staff. The job is tough and demanding. Nurse aides care for both the physical and psychological needs of their patients. SKILL REQUIREMENTS Nurse Aides must have fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing, and good visual acuity to distinguish colors. They must be able to use both hands and have legible handwriting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, stooping, and bending is necessary. The Nurse Aide must be able to move readily from one location to another in the workplace. The Nurse Aide must have good verbal and written communication skills. The Nurse Aide must be friendly and on time, with a positive attitude. They must be accountable for their work and actions, be able to resolve conflicts, be professional, flexible, and be a positive role model/mentor for new employees. THE CLASSES The HCT 101 and HCT 102 classes include both classroom and clinical training. The clinical training takes place at area hospitals and nursing homes. During the fall and spring semesters, HCT 101 and 102 classes are taught two days a week. There are classes each semester on either/or both the Franklin and Suffolk campuses and NEW for the Fall 2017 semester, the Smithfield Center if there are enough students interested in taking the classes and an instructor is available. Class times and locations vary during the summer semester with a condensed 10 week (over the standard 16 week course) course in which the student must be highly motivated to be successful. Take developmental classes. To ensure that each student has the proper educational basis to succeed in the Nurse Aide curriculum, students must take any recommended ENG developmental courses. If developmental courses in mathematics are needed, it is strongly recommended they be taken if the student intends to pursue higher education. A higher level of Mathematics is required for those students who wish to pursue an associate or bachelor s degree in this area. For further information, talk with a counselor. It is important that developmental courses are completed as quickly as possible so that the student will be appropriately prepared to pursue this program of study. A review of the catalog requirements of PDCCC for the Nurse Aide Career Studies Certificate would be appropriate to both assist and guide a prospective student. 4. Stay in touch with the Nursing Department. Your application will be reviewed by the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Department. You will be notified by the Nursing Department when your application is approved in order that you can register for the Nurse Aide classes. 5.
