It is not a question of if, but when the Big One will hit, so everyone should have enoug food, water and medical supplies to be able to be self-sufficient for at least 7 hours. Every home and workplace should also have an emergency plan in place. Drop! Cover! Hold On! Thursday, Oct. 15 10:15 am Everyone in California is invited to register as a participant in the ShakeOut Over 5.4 million Southern Californians participated in last year's ShakeOut. As a statewide drill in 2009, the goal is to double the number of participants To register visit www.shakeout.org/register. (As of August 31, over 3.7 million participants are registered statewide!) Participating in the ShakeOut will help you to be prepared for a major earthquake. Having large numbers of participants also helps emergency planners and responders develop strategies and policies, which will help them be better prepared as well. So plan on a "Drop, Cover and Hold" exercise on Oct. 15, and use the opportunity to go over emergency plans and check your emergency supplies with your family and your workplace. For general information on how to prepare for earthquakes and other disasters, please visit http://www.lacity.org/lafd/eqbook.pdf.
