Capacity building & internationalization for ABRUEM institutions 1. The programme The British Council Brazil, as part of its internationalisation agenda is launching a second edition of its Capacity Building & Internationalisation for HE call, this time, in partnership with ABRUEM (Brazilian Association of Rectors of State and Municipal Universities). The objective of the programme is to strengthen the skills and capabilities for internationalisation within Brazilian universities, building on UK HEIs expertise and experience in the field. Eligibility for this call is restricted to Brazilian institutions which are affiliated to ABRUEM. The funding will facilitate consultancies and travel grants to allow UK institutions to assist their ABRUEM counterparts in putting together an effective internationalisation agenda. The expected outcome is an increased exchange in knowledge between British and Brazilian universities in terms of internationalisation plans and to strengthen ties and foster long-term partnerships. The overall aim of the programme is to support sustainable and implementable internationalisation strategies. This means, strategies and plans set across different subjects and faculties, addressing several strands of activity and with clear investment and calculation of required resources and time. The joint work between UK Universities and ABRUEM Brazilian HEIs shall reflect a clear alignment and interest between institutions, which could lead to stronger formal agreements and partnerships in the future. An understanding of the local context and the actions to respond to institutional arrangements and regulations in partner countries, will add value to the presented proposals. 2. Specific objectives To support Brazilian HE institutions affiliated to ABRUEM in the design of their internationalisation strategies and in the production of their internationalisation plan, in partnership with UK HE institutions; To build capacity in ABRUEM Brazilian HE institutions, through the exchange of knowledge and experience between UK and Brazilian universities; To strengthen bilateral strategic partnerships between Brazilian HE institutions affiliated to ABRUEM and UK HE Institutions. 3. Expected outputs. As a result of the grant and activities funded the expected outputs must include (although not limited to) some of the following: Internationalisation strategies and plans in place for Brazilian HE institutions Internationalisation strategies directly targeting language policies Internationalisation strategies directly targeting curricula development Internationalisation strategies directly targeting staff development Bilateral agreements or initial processes for partnership developments

Increased capacity for Brazilian HEIs to leverage future resources and opportunities as part of their internationalisation plans 4. Expected outcomes: Increased opportunities for UK institutions to consolidate academic processes and partnerships in Brazil Increased opportunities for Brazilian HE institutions to consolidate processes and partnerships in the UK 5. Who can apply Brazilian universities affiliated to ABRUEM which have stricto sensu programmes approved by CAPES; UK universities with interest in the Americas region and proven track record in developing international plans and strategies; Partnerships granted under the the first edition of the Capacity Building & Internationalisation for HE call are NOT eligible to apply. * *Universities granted under the first edition of Capacity Building & Internationalisation for HE call may apply but NOT in partnership with the same institutions to which the grant was allocated. *Proposals granted with resources from the first edition of Capacity Building & Internationalisation for HE call may be eligible, as long as there is a clear relevance of the products and activities presented for and from the type of institutions involved. *Proposals must reflect the needs and opportunities from partner institutions and their level of development in terms of internationalisation. A committee with members from ABRUEM will be able to judge the relevance of these proposals to the needs of their different member institutions. 6. Possible institutional arrangements 6.1) Bilateral: an agreement between one Brazilian university affiliated to ABRUEM and one UK university. This allows the possibility of having a shared administration of resources, if required, or full administration by either of the parts. 6.2) Trilateral: an agreement between two Brazilian universities affiliated to ABRUEM with one UK university or vice versa. Resources administered by the leading institution (i.e. for the case of two Brazilian universities with one UK university, it is the UK institution who will receive and administer the grant). 6.3) Multilateral: this formula is only possible when having one UK institution working with several Brazilian HE institutions affiliated to ABRUEM, supporting the development of their internationalization plans. UK institutions are solely responsible for administrating the grant under this scheme.

7. Assessment The assessment process will be co-led by external evaluators as well as the British Council. The proposals will be scored upon their ability to strengthen the different dimensions comprising our definition of sustainable internationalisation plans, such as: Interdisciplinarity multiple strands of activity Range activities across more than one faculty Resources financial, staff and time invested Alignment interest between institutions and potential agreements in place Context awareness including awareness of national processes (laws and regulations) in partner countries. Universities proposals must have match funding. 8. How to apply Proposals must be presented jointly by a UK and a Brazilian institution affiliated to ABRUEM, and submitted via British Council s website. Support letters (in headed letter paper) from institutional authorities of the different institutions involved are required and must be uploaded in the relevant session. Complete the online application at the British Council Brazil portal, here. 9. Funding The number of projects funded will be from 10 to 20. Requested grants should range between 5,000 and 10,000 and be implemented in a period of up to 08 months. The grant can cover costs including: The exchange of researchers and staff Costs of organising meetings, seminars, training Other activities to establish and strengthen collaborative links Workshops Faculty mobility with the purpose of knowledge exchange Travel and substance costs directly related to the operation of the project * No administration or operational costs will be funded. The grant will be disbursed in a 90% - 10% formula. Initial 90% upon signature of the Grant Agreement. And the remaining 10% after validation of narrative and financial reports. The budget structure needs to consider at least half of the total funding requested to be covered by the British Council and the other half of the resources, funded via ABRUEM. The costs from ABRUEM institutions can be institutionally funded or by means of a sponsoring agency. Proposals without match funding will not be eligible. 10. Reporting mechanisms and responsibilities:

All grantees will be responsible to present final narrative and financial reports during the last month of the project. Completed financial and narrative reports are a prerequisite to receive the remaining 10% of the grant. Template for financial and narrative reports enclosed. 11.
